To think vapes need consigning to the history books?

As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

It is though. Not only do they have higher nicotine levels than cigarettes, but we also don't know the long term effects/harm that is going to come from them.

You keep trying to convince yourself vaping is fine by all means, but if you are vaping for ANY OTHER REASON than trying to give up smoking, then I feel sorry for you, because you are deluding yourself...

Keep vaping if you must, but do not try and convince me that they're perfectly safe, because they're not. NOT for long term use.

The vape fangirls on this thread are embarrassing themselves by tripping over themselves in their desperation to defend long term vaping.

If you are trying to give up smoking then it's fine to use them, for the short term. You should not be using them indefinitely. And why people start vaping when they have never smoked just baffles me.

As I have said, (and many posters agree!) vapes need banning, and making prescription only, for people trying to quit smoking. And then they should only be given for 7-8 months. 12 months at the most.

I’m not a vape fangirl, I’m a fan of harm reduction and the fact NOTHING but a vape got me to quit smoking
the NHS, public health England, cancer research etc all say it is safer than smoking
I’ll add a caveat that is if you aren’t using dodgy ones and you’re using a proper e cig and liquid or a genuine ready to go one

if I didn’t vape I would smoke so I’m better off sticking with my vape. My doctor, dentist and haematology consultant are all incredibly happy that I don’t smoke

nobody bothers about how long you use patches or gum for, it’s just uproar about vapes

Twelve year olds used to take up cigarettes, are vapes worse?

Possibly, we don't know the long term effects yet.

Whosthetabbynow · 10/03/2026 15:59

I ❤️ vapes

But would they aid stopping smoking if they were flavourless and plain black? If your discomfort about being around vaping saves someone’s life does it really matter that you don’t like it?

I think the point is that if they were flavourless and plain black and only sold in chemists, they’d be far less appealing to young people and therefore more likely to only be bought as an aid to stopping smoking.

Perhaps the very reason they work so well is they scratch an itch that a flavourless black unappealing medical aide wouldn’t?

What exactly do you mean? Isn’t the point that the only good reason for vaping is to give up smoking?

Ohthatsabitshit · 10/03/2026 18:34

Not really. I think vapings fine, but it’s obviously better for your health than cigarettes and there’s loads of evidence it’s a really good way of stopping smoking.

hulahooper2 · 10/03/2026 18:59

the fire has caused so much damage in glasgow, businesses lost , station closed and travel chaos, hotel closed and guests all needing alternative accommodation- and an iconic building lost , all vape shops should be closed immediately

LlynTegid · 10/03/2026 19:07

It is vape shops that should be closed, not vapes never be on sale anyway. A licence, people having the opportunity to object to the money laundering fronts that many are.

it could be a plug, an extension lead, anything you have in a normal shop
people said electric cars should be banned when somewhere local to me set on fire. It was nothing to do with electric cars
even if you ban vape shops, are you banning all batteries?

JenniferBooth · 10/03/2026 19:39

YourWinter · 09/03/2026 19:06

They’re not being thrown in your bin though, as most vapers do with their vapes.

My DH wasnt regularly throwing his mobility scooter in the bin either but he wasnt allowed to keep it indoors. And they wernt and still arent lithium batteries either They were/are lead acid.
If i was to link the threads about housing associations and mobility scooters the hypocrisy would be stark.

Yes exactly, to give up smoking. Hence being sold only at chemists in plain colours and no flavours is all that is necessary. No need for anything else because that’s when it attracts people who have never smoked. Seems like you’re missing the point deliberately.

Ohthatsabitshit · 10/03/2026 20:16

Or I disagree? Look if you’re dieting do you find it easier if you make the reduced calorie food nice and able to be eaten without comment on your weight loss ambitions or would you find eating something more mundane and medical? It doesn’t really matter that you can’t see vapes as they are work. The evidence is there.

Whoinvented · 10/03/2026 20:29

I find them pathetic 😂 I don’t know why but when I see grown ups with them, I think- mate just go and have a proper cigarette . It’s like they’re so so addicted and can’t put them down. At least with a real cigarette they’re owning it !

The point is that the colours and flavours are attractive to people who have never smoked. Why is that so hard for you to understand?

Monsterslam · 10/03/2026 20:44

I work at a university and they don't seem very popular. Smoking on the other hand is everywhere. I am astounded at how many young people are smoking (and annoyed I have to walk through it!)

Portakalkedi · 10/03/2026 21:05

Yes, they're ridiculous. People look like giant babies walking around sucking on them.

A fridge caused the Grenfell Fire, how are you planning to store your food ?

I understand your point I just don’t agree that the flavour and aesthetic isn’t part of the products success in attracting smokers away from tobacco. I’m happy for you to think a flavourless black “medical” version of vaping would be equally effective, I just don’t think it’s true.

I’m not talking about the efficacy of attracting people away from smoking. I’m talking about NOT attracting people who never smoked in the first place. I can’t explain it any more clearly so if you don’t get it then you can’t be helped. I won’t be engaging further.

Yeah same here. No point in trying to argue or engage with the vape fans, I've stopped wasting my time engaging with them too.....

But why should we smoke a real cigarette, when we can vape instead, which isn't as bad for us as smoking? What you said is ridiculous! You're calling people cowards for not smoking??

They don't always have higher levels of nicotine. You can buy different levels of vape liquid, from 0mg of nicotine upwards, so how can you know what strength of nicotine they're vaping?

Everything I've read online says it's safer than smoking. I agree we don't know the long term effects yet, but we do know the ingredients of eliquid and there is no tar, carbon monoxide and the many many other chemicals that are added in cigarettes.

I'm not tripping over myself contradicting myself at all, nor are others. Try reading the facts before you make claims you know nothing about.
