As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

They are disgusting things, why do humans need to suck on these things, feel same way about cigarettes. Its weird when you think about it.

vaping looks so silly! My kids are young adults now and they found their peers who took up vaping at school very amusing. And now, proper adults walking around sucking these things just look daft!

I have to agree.

if they actually were designed for smokers to give up, why are they in bright colours with sweet flavours? (Which is the complete opposite of how cigarettes are packaged) They are clearly marketed at kids, who weren't smoking in the first place.
My kids both said there were kids vaping in the classrooms at school.

teen DD saw her 30 year old cousin vaping on holiday, she was quite amazed to see an adult vaping, she said she thought it was for year 9s!

notedbiscuits · 09/03/2026 22:19

Single use vapes were supposed to be banned last June. The manufacturers have found a loophole by putting a USB port in them. I doubt the USB does anything- a dummy.

Plus many vapes are illegal, like e-bikes. A home caught fire a few weeks ago due to an e-bike

I was asking if she’d actually given up.

Also tar isn’t the only health issue. Nicotine also has negative impacts on health.

Interestingly on the other side of the coin there are limited health benefits...for some brains

Studies have shown in brains of individuals schizophrenia that nicotine actually has positive cognitive effects on areas like working memory , attention and information processing
Allevation of negative symptoms via less social withdrawal, decreased lack of motivation and blunted emotions
Normalisation of brain activity
Also shows a reduction in medication side effects

All of which contributes to the statistic of 60-90% of individuals with schizophrenia being smokers. And also the sadly increased mortality rate in part due to smoking related deaths.

And unfortunately highly addictive. However they are looking into nicotinic agonists instead (produces the same effect as nicotine but without the additive component). Which not only could be used to treat schizophrenia but also ADHD and Alzheimer's.

notedbiscuits · 09/03/2026 22:23

Also seen vapes with fonts of the same name as branded food and drink. I pick litter and often see various vapes. One was called Tngo with the font of Tango drink.

Definitely targeting teens. Unicorn Shake? Rainbow candy? Bubblegum? Plus seen teens vaping vapes that change light colour with each draw.

That's a bit of a generalisation. Why do you think all vapers aren't environmentally aware? I dispose of my vape batteries in the proper way.

I didn’t say ALL vapers… but given the mentality of the vapers I have the misfortune to know, I would bet it’s a majority.

It’s not happening and probably will never happen.

Probably? Yeah let’s not bother legislating against it and just cross our fingers and hope for the best.

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

12 year olds are not using vapes to give up the fags.

clearlyy · 09/03/2026 22:59

Yes. I’ve quit vaping this week and finding it harder to quit than smoking. I’m 3 days vape free now though! It’s horrible and I was fully convinced it was making me ill all the time. Glad to have got rid.

Twelve year olds used to take up cigarettes, are vapes worse?

Skipin29 · 09/03/2026 23:29

12 years old we’re not picking up cigarettes when vape came out. Cigarettes were about to die a death with the last gen to smoke them. Now it’s reopened again.

I sincerely doubt that. Who are the main smokers now? I would guess young adults.

GloiredeDijon · 09/03/2026 23:46

Apart from the health risks, the targeting of children and the litter they look like the users are sucking on a dummy.

There is a vape shop in my very small town and the people I see going in and out are pretty much universally chav like.

It is just near a bench and where I sometimes sit for a rest and whilst there I have a competition with myself to spot who will be going into the vape shop and really it isn’t tricky.

I think they should only be sold in chemists in plain black and non flavoured as aids to stopping smoking.

Ohthatsabitshit · 10/03/2026 12:23

But would they aid stopping smoking if they were flavourless and plain black? If your discomfort about being around vaping saves someone’s life does it really matter that you don’t like it?

Gee thanks. I can assure you I'm not at all chavvy but whatever ... some people have made up their minds and that's it.

Teens will always try smoking without the option of vapes, it's always been that way. It's seen as cool and forbidden.

I know quite a few vapers and I can assure you every single one is very environmentally friendly and dispose of their vapes in an appropriate manner.

notedbiscuits · 10/03/2026 12:42

A similar thing. Some of those nitrous oxide canisters we find on litter picks were designed for hippy crack users. Black Cobra, plus ones with imagery similar to Grand Theft Auto

LostFuse · 10/03/2026 13:27

GoldAndSilverBells · 09/03/2026 14:29

Exactly. And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes. They were created to stop people smoking, not to just randomly smoke for shits and giggles! God knows what long term harm is going to come from them.

And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes.

This is not true.

LostFuse · 10/03/2026 13:27

And there is no evidence that vaping is any safer than cigarettes.

This is not true.

It is though. Not only do they have higher nicotine levels than cigarettes, but we also don't know the long term effects/harm that is going to come from them.

You keep trying to convince yourself vaping is fine by all means, but if you are vaping for ANY OTHER REASON than trying to give up smoking, then I feel sorry for you, because you are deluding yourself...

Keep vaping if you must, but do not try and convince me that they're perfectly safe, because they're not. NOT for long term use.

The vape fangirls on this thread are embarrassing themselves by tripping over themselves in their desperation to defend long term vaping.

If you are trying to give up smoking then it's fine to use them, for the short term. You should not be using them indefinitely. And why people start vaping when they have never smoked just baffles me.

As I have said, (and many posters agree!) vapes need banning, and making prescription only, for people trying to quit smoking. And then they should only be given for 7-8 months. 12 months at the most.

I can see why teens do though - the vape displays and colourful shops plus the normal rebellion and peer pressure is quite a combination. Raspberry ice in your pretty ombre vape. I think we are failing this current generation of teens in every way possible.

Sartre · 10/03/2026 15:04

I’m pleased they seem to have actually stopped masses of people smoking, it’s the first replacement that has had such wide success.

I know many people who attempted to quit with patches, gum, hypnotherapy, even those fake cigarette things you could get but nothing worked until vaping came along, none of them returned to smoking either. I also know in the UK we have reduced smoking levels so much it isn’t even the leading cause of cancer anymore which is also great.

What I don’t appreciate is people who never even smoked in the first place vaping, teenagers in particular. I also hate the way it smells, I’d rather it be scent free than stink like chemical blueberries.

KimberleyClark · 10/03/2026 15:08

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:37

Just had a Google and it appears you approx 30% of people using vapes stop smoking compared to approx 10% of those using patches or gum.

But do they then stop vaping?

TallulahBetty · 10/03/2026 15:13

Thinking about it, I actually know more people that took up vaping from nothing, than people who used them to quiet smoking. Awful
