As above.

They are ridiculous things that add massively to landfill, and after this disastrous fire in Glasgow it's been proven how dangerous they are!

https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/news/16014837/glasgow-vape-shop-blaze-tears-through-iconic-city-centre/

The original point of them was to help people give up smoking. The idea was that you use vapes for a few months, lessening the nicotine in them every few weeks, until your cravings have subsided.

People start vaping now just for the hell of it. Including teenagers, because they have them in sweet and appealing flavours!

Time to stop making these things!

Central Station was NOT on fire, it was a building close to it.

Socially it is surely better for society that people aren’t dying prematurely or needing years of support for smoking related illnesses? If people are three times more likely to successfully beat their addiction to nicotine using vapes than the alternative patches or gum then removing that option is obviously going to have an impact.
The concept that addiction could just, you know, stop their addiction by not doing it, is fairly obtuse.

Ah, I made a mistake - I meant when it comes to socialising, not socially.

ForCyanGuide · 09/03/2026 17:59

I find the vitriol people have towards vaping a bit odd.

unlike smoking, there’s no danger to a 3rd party, so essentially there’s no anti social element to them.

Yes landfill is an issue, but that’s because the government failed to actually make disposable vapes illegal (all vapes sold now are technically not disposable, but they’re so cheap most people use them as if they are).

i was thinking of the schoolgirl that died of popcorn lung

Popcorn lung is bullshit that won’t go away. The chemical is banned in vapes but is still in cigarettes. There aren’t thousands of smokers struck down with it

Catspace · 09/03/2026 15:38

Me too. I haven’t smoked now for 14 years. The shopkeepers shouldn’t be selling the vapes to kids.

Time to stop vaping now then

There is increasing evidence that the vapour and residue is harmful to 3rd parties, particularly children and those suffering from asthma. It triggers my otherwise rarely active and mild allergic asthma, for instance so I can’t be in an enclosed space with anyone vaping.

So I shall continue to be vitriolic in my dislike of them.

I’m going to start walking past people in the pub and telling them it’s time to give up alcohol. See how that goes down

Exactly. Why don’t people just keep their noses out of what doesn’t concern them.

I’m not advocating for their use in an enclosed space.

My point was, beer gardens, bus stops, the usual outdoor places people vape - poses a risk so low it's practically unmeasurable.

Take away the risk aspect…and it’s still fucking annoying.

do I want to smell candied watermelon or whatever bollocks flavour it is? No.
do I want to be breathing that in? No

getting stuck walking down the street behind someone vaping is hideous.

which is why it can’t be compared to drinking alcohol.

Walking behind someone vaping, you may find annoying.

but is is really more annoying than all the antisocial stuff alcohol causes? People shouting, aggressive behaviour, people throwing up on the streets. Littering at 2am all the food wrappers after a visit to Chickin’ Lickin’

Vaping is considerably less anti social

Dogs are annoying and they smell. Ban them, I say!!

Changednameagain999 · 09/03/2026 18:32

Surely it must be a big risk on aeroplanes? If someone had one in their luggage could it start a fire or was there something else involved in this that triggered it? I’m on holiday at the minute so worried a bit about that.

And all the lives/ families that are wrecked through alcohol misuse x

So.. you don't like the smell and its annoying?

I could say the same about walking behind someone with excessive perfume or aftershave, or BO.

Or having to walk past/be in the same space as drunk people (and that can be dangerous for your health, never seen vaping cause someone to hurl abuse or actually attack someone!).

Ban alcohol, drunks are really annoying and sometimes dangerous.

missmollygreen · 09/03/2026 18:38

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 14:25

They have probably save thousands of lives by being used to stop smoking. Would you rather all those people were still smoking?

What about the all the kids you see with them who would probably have never had a chance to take up smoking at all?
Also most people dont use them to stop smoking. They just use them so then can still "smoke" in more social settings.

The government massively dropped the ball with vapes. After all the years it took to turn the public against smoking. So stupid

If it helps your anxiety, every airline I’ve flown with has the rule that vapes are turned off and in hand luggage

Yes but there’ll maybe the odd person who doesn’t do that. Or do they scan for them in luggage?

Vodkamartini3olives · 09/03/2026 18:56

I love my vape and id fight you to keep it. If we are going to ban them because lithium batteries can be unpredictable we'll have to also.ban phones, smart watches, laptops, tablets, power tools electric cars the list goes on.

The vape industry is worth in the region of 40 billion dollars !

It is banned but there are a whole load of unregulated vapes accessible in this country

OneKeenPeachRaven · 09/03/2026 19:02

An awful low of very illiberal sentiment on here! I do not smoke, nor vape but:

  • Vaping is orders of magnitude safer than smoking (as agreed by the NHS and the Royal College of Physicians)
  • Negative externalities? Yes, the smell can be irritating if people are inconsiderate, but I was also irritated when someone started eating McDonalds next to me on the bus...
  • Where vaping is permitted, rates of smoking fall faster.
  • Australia is a fairly horrible example - there's a huge illicit market (no regulation or quality control) and a fair bit of organised crime associated with it

Don't sell them to children. By all means restrict disposables for environmental reasons, but let adults do what they want.

IMO we're way too quick to demand authoritarian bans (which very rarely work) in this country.

Toomuchprivateinfo · 09/03/2026 19:02

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/03/2026 17:50

But would they have started smoking instead? Is there a net drop in smokers? I think it’s fairly short sighted to be making these statements if you don’t know the impact.

“But would they have started smoking instead?”

Who knows, but probably less likely as it’s no longer socially acceptable and the harmful effects are well known, as well being plastered all over the packaging.

YourWinter · 09/03/2026 19:06

TheDandyLion · 09/03/2026 14:20

Same batteries that are in your phone and laptop that is in those vapes.

They’re not being thrown in your bin though, as most vapers do with their vapes.
