To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

You likely work alongside or know people from the travelling community and don’t even realise it because many are too afraid to even admit their roots due to the amount of racism they face.

I could give you many examples of good & bad behaviour in all races, ethnicities, religions- I still wouldn’t tar an entire group of people with the same brush- because I’m not racist.

I know you think you are making a valid point- but really you’re not.

So you have no experience then?

And I can guarantee you that I can recognise a member of the TC pretty quickly from meeting them, just as they can easily recognise us country people. I grew up with the TC.

I’m not sure what your point is. It’s racist to discriminate against Roma, Gypsies or travellers. I’m calling out racism. Every reputable source of information that I can find states as such. You waffling on about the definition of race is missing the point.

www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/discrimination/discrimination-because-of-race-religion-or-belief/discrimination-because-of-race/

The point I was making and I believe I was factually defining that point, is that I’m not racist. You may feel I’m bigoted (I personally don't) but you can’t call me or other posters racist as the fact remains travellers aren’t a race.

You’ve been asked numerous times what your experience is with the travelling community and more importantly in my case the Irish travelling community and I can’t remember any reply. Would I treat a member of the travelling community with the same respect as I treat anyone else. Absolutely. Would I choose to live next to a halting site. Absolutely not. The same way as I wouldnt choose to live next to a high crime social housing area. It’s very easy to sit on the moral high ground and spout we’re all bigots if you’ve never actually been affected by the points that others, specifically the overwhelming majority of the Irish responses on this thread have made

i can go off and post numerous links if you want of the way above average percentages of animal cruelty, domestic violence, criminal offences that are committed by members of that demographic in relation to the average populous. Why would I want to live next door to a group of people who are ten times more likely to commit a crime than my non traveller neighbour. That’s not bigotry that’s just common sense

Yes you are racist. You’d face disciplinary action in the workplace for expressing views like this and rightly so.

I’d also face disciplinary action for objecting to males using the female shower and changing rooms at work. Your workplace doesn’t set the standard for social cohesion.

It even stated in the article you linked to that it was racist. I think you know you’re being pedantic really. It’s manipulative and I would be wasting my time trying to debate with you.

Nope, the word “racist” isn’t employed once

It’s really easy to spout offensive racist views on an anonymous site. Cowardly.

Greysnuggle · 09/03/2026 19:53

It is racism/prejudice/discrimination.
There is no gainsaying that. It is judging a person or a family because of the ethnicity they come from and that is never fair. Of course it isn’t,

There are an increased number of social problems among the travelling community (as a whole) in Ireland. That is a fact. If someone is spending €€€ on a house they want to ensure that the resale won’t be affected by social issues in the immediate area. Or their life won’t be affected by same. With Travellers as neighbours the risk is higher. That is true and people know it, yet acting on it is discriminatory towards the individuals involved. That’s where we are.

Most Irish people would have serious qualms about buying the house.
It’s common sense as pp said but it’s also prejudice towards the families involved. It’s both.

JollyGreenSleeves · 09/03/2026 19:55

Funny how folk are happy to call whole groups of people vermin, animals, thieves- yet pile on in defence of themselves and each other when someone calls them out for being racist.

Dehumanising entire groups of people, talking about them as if they’re inferior, reminds me Nazi ideology.

Point to one single derogatory slur I’ve used on this thread. You won’t be able to, because that kind of behaviour is not something I engage in.

And when it comes to the topic of whether or not to live alongside travellers, I’m exceptionally experienced and well informed.

What about all of us advising OP not to buy this house because of what we’ve experienced first hand? Not simply what we’ve heard?
Think we’re all racist as well I suppose?

Yes I do think you’re racist and that you’ll talk yourself into thinking you like

Ok- I’ll waste 30 seconds on you.
You wouldn’t live next to ‘them’ due to your exceptional experience, whatever that means. You do realise how pompous you sound? You think you’re better than ‘them’, superior, whatever you want to call it. This is based on their ethnic group. You have quite a lot in common with Nazis- they tried to exterminate travellers, Roma along with Jews and many other ethnic minorities because they thought they were superior. But you think me calling out your racism is a ‘derogatory slur’. You’re content to hold negative views about an entire group of people, and vocalise them (anonymous only though I bet!) because you’re so exceptionally experienced. And no, you likely still don’t get it, because there’s one thing all racists have in common and that’s ignorance.

Ablushingcrow · 09/03/2026 20:36

Donkeys years ago I was given a council house, right next door to a family of travellers that had also been given a council house.

From day one, they chucked shitty nappies over the fence into my garden, kitchen rubbish, bottles. When I asked nicely to please stop, the 'man' of the house threatened to rape me.

After a year of misery they burnt their house down, which caught onto our house and we were homeless for a few months.

Other experiences of local travellers would have me telling you...Don't do it op.

I don’t think I’m better than any community of people. I was born in a squat and then raised on a council estate FFS 😅 What I do think I am, is better than people who steal, who commit crimes, who beat their wives and children, abuse animals and litter their environment…all of which are statistically far more common in the TC. For example, travellers account for 1% of the population here in Ireland, but represent over 10% of the male prison population. Female members of the TC are over 20 times more likely to be imprisoned than non travelling women.

And anyone who says they wouldn’t think twice about living next to a community of people who are statistically far more likely to be terrible neighbours, is lying or just incredibly dumb.

Sorry? Digging what exactly? If you have an educated, coherent argument to make, then make it.

AStonedRose · 09/03/2026 20:53

For the record, I lived down the road from a permanent traveller camp for years. No problems at all, really well kept. Far better than some of the other people in the block of flats.

I had a secretary from a traveller family for a while. Lovely, funny, clever, hardworking.

My son's rugby team's manager is an Irish traveller (refers to himself as a 'pikey'). A bit rough round the edges, but a very decent human being, and great with people.

I'm sure some travellers are dicks, and I'm not denying that people have had bad experiences. But there are good and bad in every group.

@NCAgainAgainAgainAgain maybe you should learn to take people as you find them, rather than writing post after tedious post after tedious post laying bare your prejudice. Is this really how you spend your spare time?

Cerezo · 09/03/2026 21:40

Bloozie · 09/03/2026 08:51

I’m not sure it’s racism though.

A traveller camp semi-regularly occupies land at the top of my road and it brings with it a whole world of anti-social behaviour. Dirt bikes and quad bikes race up and down the road at night. Houses on my street have plants ripped up and thrown in the road. Dogs run in the street, obviously no one gets the mess up. The local shops enforce a numbers rule so they can try and manage shoplifting. And the site itself is left in a disgusting state when they leave. If you try and have a word with the parents they flat out deny that it’s their children ragging bikes into the early hours of the morning.

I love the idea of the travelling life, and the family bonds seem unshakeable. That must be nice. But when so many people report similar or identical patterns of behaviour, I don’t think that makes us racist.

You shared your personal experience, without dehumanising language that is so problematic, so my comment doesn’t apply to you, good on you.

It's you who's being pompous.

People's objection is to the culture, not to the 'race'.

Why don't you open your eyes and actually read the experiences on this thread.

Objection to culture? That’s what you’re calling this? Vermin, thieves, animals- that’s the language that has been used on this thread. You ok with that? This is how the nazis dehumanised entire groups of people. No one group of people is better than another group of people. I learnt that when I was in primary school.

At least if you’re gonna be blatantly racist, own it and call it what it is.

@NotTerfNorCisand most of the rest of us on this thread don’t need to ‘own’ anything. I have not used any of that derogatory terminology, nor have the vast majority of posters on here. And I’ve called out and reported previous posters for their use of any such slurs, all of which have been promptly removed.

You on the other hand… you have baselessly branded people racist, bigoted, prejudiced, akin to nazis!!!! all because they have dared to share their real life experiences. Your behaviour is despicable.
