To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

That’s English law which classes them as a race with respect to the equality act. That’s doesn’t actually mean there’s a race of Irish travellers. The hints in the name. They’re Irish or of Irish descent. What the UK has done is bundled all those protected characteristics like ethnicity and race under one umbrella for an act which is quite clear if you read it.

In Ireland, there’s a separate act that protects Irish travellers and they’re recognised as an ethnic minority group not a race by law, distinct from the racial discrimination acts which protect people on the basis of race. And I’m Irish so….

Thats not to say they don’t suffer discrimination or harassment akin to racism. But just to point out that they’re technically not a race

I call out racism and bigotry where it is abundantly evident.

The racists and bigots make their pitch worse with their weak defence.

Most people capable of critical thought do the same.

Evidence ?

These are not people you want to live anywhere near OP.

I too have experience of these travellers and now am dealing with Roma - where I am a resident in the EU.

They don't want to respect anyone or anything. I would say more about how I feel about them but I would be banned. Ordinarily, I am a pretty much live let live, left leaning person, but my dealings with both travellers and roma has left me feeling nothing but distress and disgust and fear and loathing.

Those calling out others as racist (check the meaning) and bigoted etc, have not had the frightening experience of encountering these people. How they choose to live is on them. How we choose to view them is our right.

I wouldn't want either group anywhere near me or my family.

I notice a distinct ignorance attitude between Ireland and the UK.

Ireland is far more progressive regarding the Travelling Community. You must employ them and allow them into schools over there. Because of that, they are productive members of society and judgement is far less over there. The vast majority of Irish people would never dream of using disgusting terms as a descriptor towards them as the TC are robustly protected under the Equality Act.

Lets skip across to the UK shall we?...the Travelling Community are renouned for causing trouble. Why? Because they are persecuted for who they are. There is a distinct prejudice against them. Terms such as "Pikeys" are a common term, even amongst 'educated' British people.

Typical of Britain and just only serves to highlight that Ireland is a far more progressive country, and not just in that respect, but multiple respects.

I'm Irish and don't agree with this.

I would hate to live near Travellers for a number of reasons. They treat their animals in an appalling way. Out local animal rescue told me that many of their dogs come from Travellers - they said that the Travellers don't believe in microchipping or neutering dogs. And that any dog with health issues is dumped on the side of the road as they won't pay vet fees.

I work in a school and there is very high absenteeism from the Traveller children. They often don't have the correct uniform, etc. Social workers can only do so much.

There is no chance it will be fine. Those 6 houses will house around 40 kids, 15 to 20 adults, temporary caravans with more children, horses, scrap metal piles, rubbish and attract criminality and drug dealing. I live within 4 miles of 3 traveller sites and worked in Limerick, including Rathkeal, for 20 years.

I live near one in the south of England who are established and we don't have any trouble. Sounds like your experience in Ireland is different

This just shows that no two travellers are the same. I have family that travel in the summer and leave the places they stay on clean and tidy and the rubbish bagged up. I’m a gypsy that is settled in a house most of my neighbours gardens and drives are lovely but there’s a woman here and the front of her garden is piled high with old furniture and rubbish, her back garden is a tip filled with dog shite and more rubbish. She has no excuse, she drives so could take the rubbish herself to the tip but she never does. She’s also a social worker 😬

so to cut a long story short there is good and bad in everyone and some are more respectful than others. But I can’t judge all non gypsy’s the same because I can see that not all are. But it doesn’t work the same when it’s us.

So what makes you a gypsy? Are all your neighbours gypsies?

I’m not sure what your point is. It’s racist to discriminate against Roma, Gypsies or travellers. I’m calling out racism. Every reputable source of information that I can find states as such. You waffling on about the definition of race is missing the point.

See Irish publication above- it’s called racist in there too.

JollyGreenSleeves · 09/03/2026 18:49

Why do racists never want to admit they’re racist? Is it because of a lack of critical thinking ability? That’s what I’ve always assumed.

Yab v v ur. Prejudice and racist to make decisions based on “what you’ve heard”

have you any idea how it has taken Travellers to be housed in spaces with the rest of the population?? 100’s of years … Travellers are usually placed in local unwanted spaces where there’s a busy motorway, a train station, an electricity substation or pylon.

Sleep well whilst you judge others base. On “what you’re heard” and don’t use mn as trust pilot

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 09/03/2026 18:56

Mn is racist when asking anything about Travellers, this is just a way of you being a NIMBY person with a sense of righteousness because someone else told you it was ok

Out of interest, what is your first hand experience of living alongside members of the TC?

What about all of us advising OP not to buy this house because of what we’ve experienced first hand? Not simply what we’ve heard?
Think we’re all racist as well I suppose?

And I actually think your language is out of control.

You cannot call an entire community vermin. That’s really awful and I’m going to report your post.

AStonedRose · 09/03/2026 19:34

Unfortunately this thread will disappear soon. Because there’s no racism on MN, is there?

vermin? Fuck me, you could get prosecuted for that

You likely work alongside or know people from the travelling community and don’t even realise it because many are too afraid to even admit their roots due to the amount of racism they face.

I could give you many examples of good & bad behaviour in all races, ethnicities, religions- I still wouldn’t tar an entire group of people with the same brush- because I’m not racist.

I know you think you are making a valid point- but really you’re not.

Yes you are racist. You’d face disciplinary action in the workplace for expressing views like this and rightly so.

I do, but I’m not engaging with your ignorant questions- turn the question back on yourself, only this time replace it with another race/ethnicity and maybe you’ll realise how stupid you sound.
