To buy my first house two minutes down the street from traveller housing initiative?

Please give me advice.
I’m sale agreed on a new build house in Dublin . I found out that there is a new traveller housing initiative going in right across the road from me. Please don’t say I’m being snobby I’m really not. I’ve just heard stories of anti social behaviour etc. I know there’s always some lovely people but I’m nervous.

Do I give the house up because of this? It’s a substantial amount of houses for the traveller scheme all together - six very large detached four bedroom homes. It is two minutes walk from me. I drove up to the development to see and the traveller housing initiative is not in front of me directly as I thought. It is not in front of or behind me but about 2 minutes walk down the road. I can only see gable end of one of the houses from mine. Not directly facing.
I need to sign contacts in 2 days and I am so torn.
Otherwise it’s perfect house for me. With this information are you saying yes or no?

NO

IWishIWasABaller · 08/03/2026 23:08

You know the answer to this already op pull out and move elsewhere while you still can . You'll have no hope of reselling the house in the future

Shutuptrevor · 08/03/2026 23:09

No. Sorry 😔

smallglassbottle · 08/03/2026 23:09

We just had a traveller invasion yesterday, resulting in arrests so I'd probably decline.

Reliablesource · 08/03/2026 23:10

A hard no from me. 2 minutes away is on your doorstep. There WILL be anti social behaviour and dramas on your doorstep, and what’s more, you will find it well nigh impossible to sell in the future. Cut your losses now and find another property.

dicentra365 · 08/03/2026 23:10

I would be more likely to say go ahead if it was actually already there because then you could go and see how the area was being looked after see if there’s any noise or disturbance but as it is, you’ve got nothing to base it on. I think you could be causing yourself a lot of anxiety so I would pull out

Gettoachiro · 08/03/2026 23:10

Pull out. It's just asking for trouble. If not from any idiots among the community then trouble in possibly selling your house in the future if you want to.

ShesGotIt · 08/03/2026 23:10

Hmm, speaking as someone who lives in an area with several large "settled" traveller sites, I'd pass on that. That's my objective opinion, and many articles in our local paper would back that up.

Papercompany · 08/03/2026 23:10

It is so hard to buy a house - well done at getting to this stage in the process. I would do more research.. Talk to your family, anyone already living in the area, etc.

I would hate to live near troublesome Travellers. Maybe you could sell in a few years if that turns out to be the case? They might be okay?

MelMar1 · 08/03/2026 23:10

Sorry guys meant to emphasis that I’m in Dublin Ireland and new builds are like gold dust. I got this through cancellation list as estate agent told me that previous buyers loan fell through. I found out recently that county council bought the houses in front of traveller development for social housing. And of course I didn’t mind that. But six behind it are traveller specific scheme. As I said can’t see their house from mine directly just that one gable end. But yes it’s a short walk. Arghhhh I love the house but my mind keeps replaying this.

metalbottle · 08/03/2026 23:13

No way, unless you're getting an absolutely enormous discount.

FoxLoxInSox · 08/03/2026 23:13

As much as I hate myself for saying this: I’d probably pull-out. I don’t want it to be the case but I do think it is the case that you’d end up having problems either from their community or from the rest of the local community who might end up in conflict with travellers. Either way, you’d never sell that house.

RunningJo · 08/03/2026 23:14

No, sorry OP but I wouldn’t do it.

I used to live quite locally to a traveller camp (2-3 miles away). The used to steal from the local shop, race horses through the street. The kids were utterly feral, throwing stones at cars and trying to start fights with kids in the local park. Dogs and horses often got lose onto the road, not to mention the dawn raids done by the police. Oh and the litter, so much litter.

Appreciate what you say about houses being like gold dust, but it would still be a hard no from me.

OldKingCole · 08/03/2026 23:14

No, don’t do it, you will regret it and find it extremely difficult to sell the house.

Daysgo · 08/03/2026 23:16

No don't buy. Problems reselling etc

SchoolDilemma17 · 08/03/2026 23:16

No way
Pull out now

Poetnojo · 08/03/2026 23:23

Please give it up if you can.we are near a traveller camp, and people have often had trouble in the village, especially kids.I can’t see it ending well if you stay.

Bonkers1966 · 08/03/2026 23:27

That will be 6 settled families so the day to day reality might not be too bad. That said, my sister found herself in a similar situation. They were on her estate. The children of the household set their dog on her cat and killed it. The mother wouldn't hear a word against her precious boys, which is the norm. You probably know how many Irish families have a similar story. If I were your mother I would advise you not to buy in that spot. Unless they are almost giving away the new builds. It's a huge risk OP.

MelMar1 · 08/03/2026 23:29

@Bonkers1966 this made me feel physically sick I am heartbroken for your sister!! That is beyond horrific. I am so sorry to hear this.
can I ask you, if she is in Ireland too?

HoskinsChoice · 08/03/2026 23:29

The fact that you are questioning it before it's even started tells you everything you need to know. Your house will be devalued and become unsellable at the slightest hint of trouble. You would be crazy to buy it.

Haggisfish3 · 08/03/2026 23:32

It’s the reselling that would put me off. You can see how many peoole wouldnt even entertain buying it.

Crazycatladywithnocats · 08/03/2026 23:33

Good job you have found out before committing yourself. The next person looking to buy that house may not be so lucky.

Rewis · 08/03/2026 23:34

Went to look at new builds that were quite close to a traveler site and won't be considering them. The realtor was pretending not to know anything eventhoug you could see the campers and horses from the window.
I'm from elsewhere so I didn't know anything about then and had no prejudice. That was changed quite quickly and I just wouldn't want to risk it if there was any other options

ShamrockShenanigans · 08/03/2026 23:35

I have travellers in my family and it's still a hard no from me.

And I say that through personal experience.

This thread will probably be deleted when it's discovered by people who have never encountered travellers or had any problems in their area caused by them.

It's the way it's always gone on Mumsnet.
