To think Facebook has dropped off a cliff lately?

Usage has been declining for a while but I've noticed this year hardly any of my friends post anymore, even the most prolific ones have cut right down. This has resulted in me hardly bothering anymore - what's the point if noone's reading? I've only posted twice since Christmas and the thought of doing so almost makes me cringe.Really not a bad thing imo. However, the groups are still very active so I'll keep it for them, I really like how most of them will let you post using a nickname now which I really like for privacy....

Facebook has been naff for a long time.
No-one under about 45 seems to engage with it.
Fascinating really to see the life cycle of a platform come full circle.

Thesnailonthewhale · 07/03/2026 08:27

I use it for marketplace, community notices and events.

AliasGrape · 07/03/2026 08:34

I’ve not posted since Christmas. I was pretty prolific at one point and probably carried it on long past the point that everyone else had decided it was ‘cringe’. But I can’t really imagine doing so again. I have it really locked down and just a few family and friends anyway, but still. We were out last night and took some lovely pictures in a beautiful place, the sort of thing I’d have previously have shared but it didn’t occur to me.

Catza · 07/03/2026 08:36

I've never used facebook for keeping up with friends. I just use it for groups. Don't think I posted anything on there since 2010.

Mikabli · 07/03/2026 08:38

Maybe its just demographics. Im in my 30s and all my friends use it as does my neice and her friends who are 21. I know a couple of people who quit it but i would say itd very much alive and kicking. I find the groups very useful.

Pepperedpickles · 07/03/2026 08:39

It’s still very active for groups - I have complex autoimmune issues and advise in a few groups and they’re always very busy, but no one actually uses it to update their own profiles anymore.

B1anche · 07/03/2026 08:40

I literally keep it for my local neighbourhood news and selling groups, which I find useful. Friends no longer post and I've not posted anything (other than on neighbourhood groups) for years. I'm over 45.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 07/03/2026 08:41

I only use it for certain groups. Occasionally I may post the odd photo once every few years, I still know people who post constantly 24/7 though.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 07/03/2026 08:41

I haven't used it for a while. It's just not interesting anymore. Noone I know does any updates of any worth and the groups post usually similarly stupid comments all the time.

I've deleted the app but haven't deactivated as it's still useful to have to log into things, but it's just not an important resource anymore.

Really? I’d say the opposite. The only people I know who still use it are over 40.

Icecreamandcoffee · 07/03/2026 08:45

Same as PPs. I don't really post, perhaps a couple of times a year usually for birthdays/ Christmas/ after holidays and mainly to update our abroad family and friends but use it regularly for marketplace and local groups. Pretty much all my friends use it the same (we are all 30s so remember it in it's heyday). I think the prolific advertising has killed it off quite a bit.

Agreed! My elderly relatives are always posting but friends in their late 20s/30s post too!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/03/2026 08:47

I find the groups useful for information.
e.g. an accident has blocked a road, the info is on FB before diversion signs are in place.

Any hairdressers available on Tuesday? etc

TheDandyLion · 07/03/2026 08:48

Local groups and marketplace is the only thing I use it for and I only check that once a month or so. I find Reddit better for subject topic or global groups.

SuzyFandango · 07/03/2026 08:49

Its awful there's nothing on it. No one I know posts anything. When it started we shared photos of nights out, organised meet ups, it was how you kept in touch with school friends etc after you moved away. It relied on people sharing overly about their lives, its creators understood that most people are a bit nosy and that was what drove engagement.

Now its just full of utter rubbish that messes with your brain and keeps you doomscrolling. I try not to go on it, i uninstalled the app, but i do keep an account because I'm on a support group for my daughters medical condition on there and its the only reason i use it!

whoTFismadelaine · 07/03/2026 08:49

Men trying to profit from friendship by adding marketing, politics and AI. If it becomes so fake people don't know if they are responding to an advert, you've lost the main joy that was human contact. Idiots.

Search up the term ‘enshitification’ but it’s basically a more formal explanation of what you said :)

NewZebra · 07/03/2026 08:53

I only use it because my older family members all post on there. Though I never actually post on there myself.

FunnyOrca · 07/03/2026 08:53

I deleted it in 2014.

My mum still uses it to keep up with her 90-something year old cousin in the US. The cousin’s grandchildren use it and my mum sees photos of their kids. We check it on Christmas Day after lunch to see how many kids they have each year! 🤣

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 07/03/2026 08:59

I don't use it, it was helpful when the cat went missing but other than that I've stopped posting. I keep it for the local groups which are useful as I have found out what i need to do to my leaking loo for example or when the roads closed, and have messenger for friends group chats that we haven't moved to WhatsApp for some reason.

I've stopped using Instagram too.

BadSkiingMum · 07/03/2026 09:00

I always find these ‘Facebook is dead’ threads quite funny, as people generalise from their own feed/experience. It has 3.07 billion active users and is still the largest social media platform, although Instagram is catching up.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 07/03/2026 09:01

It's just full of stuff I'm not interested now.

My feed is full of adverts and people/pages that I don't follow and I'm not interested in.

I'm sick of seeing the bamboo knickers ad with the close up of sweaty gussets. That's just minging!

Itsmetheflamingo · 07/03/2026 09:02

I agree it’s been dead a long time. I use it do groups but it’s def an old persons app.

TroysMammy · 07/03/2026 09:03

I use it to wish people I never see anymore a happy birthday but that is tapering off. I also like looking at my memories to see what shit I posted years ago 😂. A recent one was an now ex partner who bit the ends of 5 pasties I'd made. I now know I should have dumped the abusive bastard for this.

Zanatdy · 07/03/2026 09:06

Yeah i’ve cut right down, hardly post now, and don’t go on much. Prefer instagram, but don’t post, just watch and occasional comment.
