To think Facebook has dropped off a cliff lately?

Usage has been declining for a while but I've noticed this year hardly any of my friends post anymore, even the most prolific ones have cut right down. This has resulted in me hardly bothering anymore - what's the point if noone's reading? I've only posted twice since Christmas and the thought of doing so almost makes me cringe.Really not a bad thing imo. However, the groups are still very active so I'll keep it for them, I really like how most of them will let you post using a nickname now which I really like for privacy....

Hardly anyone in my on my fb (im 34) posts anything other than reels/photos. It's been the same for years. I genuinely wouldn't dream of just writing a status 😂

lljkk · 08/03/2026 20:28

I mostly use FBk for groups I have common interests with. There are some personal posts too, which are nice.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 08/03/2026 20:29

A few friends of mine post updates, one about where she goes when out out, she’s at Crufts this weekend, another posts motivational posts, posts of her children and grandchildren and another posts work photos and of his rescue dog. So they do post.

RainsFall · 08/03/2026 20:34

Haven’t shared anything on mine in years, I’ll change my profile picture once a year or so if I feel like it and have a nice photo to update it with. Most people I have on there probably wouldn’t recognise me walking down the street now to be honest and I don’t feel like I need to share anything with them or impress anyone anymore like I used to in my younger years.

Not many people on my friends list post often anymore. The ones who post regularly tend to be of the older generation, people around my age are a mixed bag of posting once every few weeks/months or not posting at all.

The groups can be useful though and are still active. I’m on the ones for my local area and a few groups relating to hobbies, but even on those I tend to just read and rarely post anything. If I do I do it anonymously.

BarbieKew · 08/03/2026 20:37

I post a couple of times a month and enjoy seeing old memories come up each day. I had a big friend cull recently so my feed is generally just nice pics and funny stories from my mates, or info about local businesses and news. I much prefer it to Instagram.

TempestTost · 08/03/2026 20:43

Yes, my observation has been that while the way and demographics have been changing a while, they have really shifted over the last year.

Lots of people still use it somewhat, but typically for very specific things. School FB page, neighbourhood page, that kind of thing. Maybe to share pictures with relatives, or contact a business or see what is on at the library. Marketplace. Not many people post regularly about personal stuff.

I think a major part is the amount of ads and content that is commercial. You have to get through so much just to see a few things that you might be interested in. So I have little interest in scrolling, I usually go right to the thing I am looking for.

Plus of that commercial content, so much is scams, and it seems like they have no real interest in controlling that. I flagged a scam up a few times, and still kept seeing it on there for weeks. It wasn't marginal either, it was an outright scam to get money.

I don't know what it is the Meta people think people go to FB for, but it isn't most of what is there.

HolyRigatone · 08/03/2026 20:46

The groups are active but that’s about it. Aside from that it’s just targeted advertising or pointless attention seeking posts from randoms that it thinks I’d be interested in (but aren’t).

changeme4this · 08/03/2026 21:05

The random ads or pages FB thinks you might be interested in have increased substantially.

I also found FB would state DD likes a particular page but when I asked her about it she had no idea of viewing the page at all.

pages that I do like rarely show updates. It’s getting frustrating to use.

Thesnailonthewhale · 07/03/2026 08:27

I use it for marketplace, community notices and events.

So do I. I reunited a distressed elderly gentleman with his dog yesterday via the local community page on Facebook.
I also follow various cooks/chefs and exercise gurus.

keffie12 · 08/03/2026 22:55

I use it for family, niche type groups, and a hobby

Came off Twitter when EM took over. TikTok nah for got me.

When I logged on to TikTok, and see my late husband niece has posted a video of the birth of her baby up it's like no. That was also deactivated

Instagram is ok for a hobby I have I use minimally. That's it

OnTheBoardwalk · 08/03/2026 23:01

It did help my brother get reunited with his cat when it escaped. The groups are good

i like it for memories but I haven’t posted for a very long time

im sick of not seeing my friends updates but getting a load of shite updates from randoms

HelloVoid · 09/03/2026 00:03

A few years back when FB turned into endless ads, people’s posts wouldn’t show up so much. So they wouldn’t get much interaction, and therefore starting posting less. It’s definitely been a collective thing.

It used to be absolutely the norm to post pics of every day/night out, and now no one bothers. I don’t mind, I used to (sadly, I admit) see life often through a lens of good photos and funny statuses for Facebook, and now I rarely bother taking photos of anything except my dogs, and just enjoy life in the moment. I like the air of mystery 😂, although life is more isolated now as the dawn of Facebook also killed phoning for chats, which haven’t resurrected even though FB is dead.

NotTerfNorCis · 09/03/2026 00:09

It suddenly changed a while ago to less personal stuff. More reels, suggestions for groups, ads, posts from random strangers. I've stayed with it for the groups, but wasn't particularly happy with it. Also, I think there's another thread on this, but it's filling up with AI crap, which feels little a waste of time.

Gowlett · 09/03/2026 00:13

Haven’t used it in years. Still have it.
I’ll look at it occasionally, when I remember.
But I never see my friends posting.
Just ads & commercial stuff, news etc…
I can’t be arsed going in, changing settings.

anon666 · 09/03/2026 00:14

Same. I never post anything on social media now. I think its since everything became so tacky and clichéd. I despise all things "Tiktok". Haven't got it, never will, but once everything became "stories" or videos, it became sensory overload for me. Too much, too quickly.

I preferred Instagram while it was a fixed image, not reels. Also, for every real post that I follow, Facebook throws up at least two or three suggestions of other content I "might like". Ugh. It drives me mad.

I do use groups on Facebook that are based around my hobbies and interests, but they are all strangers.

ScullyD · 09/03/2026 00:18

I’m early 30s and will be leaving this year. The problem is I still would like to use it for community forums but nothing else.

i hate it. It’s full of porn and right wing rubbish.

Rollercoaster1920 · 09/03/2026 00:20

Facebook keeps suggesting a new friend to me. Sadly I know he died last year. It freaks me out a bit, and I think shows how the platform tries to boost engagement if you've been quiet.

Usernameunavailableagain12 · 09/03/2026 00:27

instagram is so much better

cariadlet · 09/03/2026 00:31

I'm a late adopter of FB. I didn't bother with it for years because I thought it was full of people posting photos of nights out and holidays so I wasn't interested.

I joined for the groups. I'm in a few local groups and loads of interest groups.

I mostly post/share posts about politics, women's rights and the environment. I'm happy with what the algorithm shows me in my FB feed. Most of it interests me.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 09/03/2026 02:37

I think it has had its day really. Like Friends ReUnited.

Also it never had a great image with some people because of its seemingly unmoderated posts, lies, lack of privacy and idiots using it.

There is now a lot more competition and many more Social Media Apps.

Flossy1985 · 09/03/2026 04:52

I deactivated mine over 3yrs ago and I definitely do not miss it. Just another platform to post drama and what not on which I have no time for. If anyone wants me they have my number and if they don’t well there’s a reason for that!! I’m 40 for context

jdb9803 · 09/03/2026 05:24

The problem with Facebook is that you spend ages scrolling through sponsored and suggested posts before you see someone you recognise - often see friends posts two or three days later. Mainly use for local groups or when planning a holiday

Porn?
I never get porn when I look at FB.

I don’t think they really care too much as long as people are willing to scroll through hundreds of advertisements to get to what they want to see

MinecraftMum40 · 09/03/2026 07:24

I’m early 40s and loved Facebook until about 6 months ago-it’s all just ads and crappy “news” stories. I much prefer instagram where I can interact with people about my specialist interest. It’s much less toxic on insta too. I check in once or twice a week on fb now, I was on daily. It’s definitely gone down hill.
