To think Facebook has dropped off a cliff lately?

Usage has been declining for a while but I've noticed this year hardly any of my friends post anymore, even the most prolific ones have cut right down. This has resulted in me hardly bothering anymore - what's the point if noone's reading? I've only posted twice since Christmas and the thought of doing so almost makes me cringe.Really not a bad thing imo. However, the groups are still very active so I'll keep it for them, I really like how most of them will let you post using a nickname now which I really like for privacy....

Lately? It's been an absolute binfire of badly targeted ads and AI slop fot a good few years now.

Snoff · 07/03/2026 09:43

Facebook used to be great for organising events and meetups with people, but now it really doesn't work very well for that - and not just because less people are actively checking it. The platform itself is just less useful than it used to be.

For example, I'm in a bookclub group on fb that organises a meetup in a different cafe every Sunday, and I sign up the event on fb most weeks but haven't signed up to tomorrow's one yet. However, there's nothing on fb prompting me to look for it. I just opened my events page, and tomorrow's event is not in any of the tabs ('for you', 'local', 'this week', 'friends' or 'following' even though the event should be in all of those things). Instead there's easter kids stuff (I'm childless), church things (atheist), bands (not into gigs), and stuff in other towns. Even if I specifically open up the group, there's nothing telling me the group is holding an event tomorrow, unless I specifically open up the event tab in the group. It's just so easy to miss stuff.

Dollymylove · 07/03/2026 09:46

Its good for keeping in touch with relatives/friends in faraway places, and some of the groups are very good. I agree that many are not posting very much, Its good for getting messages out, a loved one missing, a stolen car, a missing pet, but I agree it seems to have gone down the drain recently

Nincompoo · 07/03/2026 09:50

I use it for hobby stuff and local groups but that’s it. When I look at it it seems to be mostly people in America whinging about their neighbours or missing dogs in Australia, if FB wants to push that sort of shit at me it would be useful if they could at least make it local!
I used Instagram much more nowerdays, but again, only for hobby stuff.

ThatCyanCat · 07/03/2026 09:52

It's nothing but ragebait content mill slop now. Worse than pointless. I've saved all my data from it and I may pull the plug and delete soon.

IAxolotlQuestions · 07/03/2026 09:52

I use it as a link library now. I post to an audience of one (me) and it’s a way to store articles, links and pictures/memes I’d like to be able to access in the future.

I only still have it because of a family group, but am thinking of deleting the whole account.

itsthetea · 07/03/2026 10:08

@Snoffthe event will show up 2 weeks after it happens

HappyHarridan · 07/03/2026 10:10

I deleted my account in 2014 and it was dire then!

I lived in America for a while, made a lot of friends there, and they very actively post on Facebook, so I enjoy seeing what they’re up to nowadays and keeping in touch. I also use it as a bit of a photo storing thing as well. Since I was 17 I’ve had Facebook and every year I’ve done a photo album called 2009, 2010 etc and uploaded all my photos from that year. It’s the quickest and easiest way to access any old photos so I love looking back at them. I’m still going strong with my 2026 album now, I don’t care if anyone else looks at them, it’s just a handy/easy space for me to store all my photos.

Exactly what I do and although I have tailed off a bit I do love it as a photo album for me, like you i couldnt give a toss if anyone else looks or likes.
Dnt go on there otherwise, deleted the app and only have it on my laptop to add the photos.
My 18 Yr old son has started to use it, as do some of his friends so I do think it's becoming more popular to the younger people out there.
Deleted Instagram too.
Fi nd them all a load of shite to be honest

Mumofteentwins · 07/03/2026 10:33

I thought no one actually posts on FB now. You post on Insta and you can share that post to FB if you want.

AprilinPortugal · 07/03/2026 10:37

Agree OP I just mainly use it for my groups now.

cartfred · 07/03/2026 10:38

I use it for the community stuff so I know what’s going on locally. If there’s a better place for this please correct me.

Thecows · 07/03/2026 10:42

Maybe it was a bit of a phase , the novelty has worn off and we're all a bit over it 🙅‍♀️

Tarkan · 07/03/2026 10:44

Mikabli · 07/03/2026 08:38

Maybe its just demographics. Im in my 30s and all my friends use it as does my neice and her friends who are 21. I know a couple of people who quit it but i would say itd very much alive and kicking. I find the groups very useful.

Same here. I’m in my 40s (but younger than 45) and I have plenty of friends my age and younger who use it regularly. I also know plenty of people in their 20s who use it all the time too. I do know lots of people older than me on it as well but I definitely wouldn’t call it an old person platform with the people I know on it.

goz · 07/03/2026 10:49

I think people under 40 left Facebook 10 years ago.

ShakeNCake · 07/03/2026 10:55

Agree that in my circle (40s) its dead, but I see a lot of my friend's kids using it (20s) for professional reasons like promoting their work, and even my niece (teens) using it to share their artwork, so its interesring to see the demographic and use change! I think people don't use it like a daily blog anymore, but good riddence to the 'look at my dinner' and 'everyone's a snake' posts 😂

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 07/03/2026 10:56

The abhorrent algorithms won't help.

I'm sick or seeing adverts for direct cremations and ash jewellery just because I happened to search via the browser for a funeral director, having lost my mum.

Than there's the any football team will do if you happen to read on football article.

CruCru · 07/03/2026 11:00

When I look at it, it just seems to be endless BoredPanda stories lifted from Reddit (and sometimes from here). Plus a shitload of AI slop.

ScarlettSarah · 07/03/2026 11:02

Facebook's been rubbish for YEARS. I deleted mine ages ago. I'm 40. Also recently left Instagram as they openly allow loads of hate speech on there, loads of misogyny etc. Nothing ever seems to fall foul of their rules when reported.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/03/2026 11:02

I know a few friends who use it. One friend has a few accounts (she was hacked) and we chatted by Instagram message recently.

damelza · 07/03/2026 11:07

Never for "friends" etc. but hell yes for groups and local information. Instagram can go do one, the clips are so short, full of damn influencers and a crock of total shite. Deleted! Same with Tik Tok.

Endless scrolling was taking me over. Now I connect with others on FB who have similar interests etc. to me. I'm not a young one anymore either, so that could be a factor!

I also have a secret - I watch endless US police body cam footage on FB. They are longer than IG clips and give me great entertainment. The things they get up to over there ha ha.

Oh and me 😂

Also 'person gets thrown off a plane' stuff. God damn, so entertaining!

The level of drunkenness on some US planes is unreal. Trying to get them down the airbridge is often a huge challenge for the cops. I can't understand how the gate staff let them on in the first place! Always Spirit and other low cost carriers, but maybe the more ahem... better class of carrier won't allow filming to be broadcast - I dunno.

But yes, glad to have a fellow traveller who secretly enjoys this kind of stuff!

I think people under 40 left Facebook 10 years ago.

Not all of them. Around a quarter of my 75-ish FB friends are under 40.
