To think Facebook has dropped off a cliff lately?

Usage has been declining for a while but I've noticed this year hardly any of my friends post anymore, even the most prolific ones have cut right down. This has resulted in me hardly bothering anymore - what's the point if noone's reading? I've only posted twice since Christmas and the thought of doing so almost makes me cringe.Really not a bad thing imo. However, the groups are still very active so I'll keep it for them, I really like how most of them will let you post using a nickname now which I really like for privacy....

I think their algorithm got greedy. It sidelines friends for groups so you dont see them. So you can get loads of stuff coming at you that you like, as if it was an endless Google feed. Health, running hobbies authors music history etc etc all the stuff I like to doom scroll but nothing from friends. So I killed FB and Insta three weeks ago on my phone and hope never to go back.

Suzjspik · 09/03/2026 10:44

They've changed where friends posts pop up now you have to click on feeds and then 'friends' I only noticed by accident when I was messing with settings because I had thought the same thing myself, no one posts updates and mine barely get seen.

godmum56 · 09/03/2026 11:01

I don't put much on my profile but then I never have. I am in quite a few craft and book related groups and follow similar pages. Most of my friends on there are all in one or two groups and we chat on those. The other groups I am on are for the sale and purchase of vintage items. I am mostly a buyer and have had some great buys, also the groups are much nicer and safer to shop on than the markerplace. I haven't noticed any difference in the amount of frequency of posts.

I tried that but I'm still getting wall to wall ragebait and IQ-killing AI slop.

It's pure enshittification.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 09/03/2026 11:29

I deactivated my account this weekend

I'm sick to death of all the stupid AI videos and racist content and just general bullshit that gets posted on there now

I'm sad not to have all my photos and "memories", but on the whole I don't think I'll miss it...

ThiagoJones · 09/03/2026 12:15

Funnily enough I deactivated my account off the back of this thread 😂. I only used it for a particular sports group but I’m in the WhatsApp group anyway so any important messages go in there.

Every 3rd post being an advertisment is not helping and shows what FB priorities are. I for one has never bought anything from a FB advertisement so what is the point? How many millions feel the same way?

And I suspect a good many of the ads are scams. Who hasn’t seen those amazing looking knitted jumpers/cardigans for relative peanuts? Often because ‘Sadly we’re having to close our much-loved family business…’

R4 has a podcast called ‘The Knitted Cardigan Scam’ - all the poor lady received was a print of the pattern on a piece of cheap material.

Toomuchprivateinfo · 09/03/2026 12:24

I was never that into it anyway and rarely posted anything myself but I do value the groups - local community and national eg WIWIKAU and I also really value the anonymity aspect- I don’t want everyone knowing my business.

If it weren’t for the groups I wouldn’t bother because no one I know (apart from one egomaniac colleague) posts anything on their personal page anymore and my feed is mostly ads.

Nosejobnelly · 09/03/2026 12:55

I use it for groups mainly. A lot of my FB friends still post / I maybe post once a month. I don’t really use instagram and I’m not on X (cesspit). I do find all the ads and BS annoying but if you go on a group page you don’t see that.

It's now a platform for hate. Elderly morons love it though.

this. One of my local groups has an amazing giveaways sub group and the local groups that I belong to are generally are a mine of information and helpful and supportive.

That is just plain rude

godmum56 · 10/03/2026 12:26

I find this an intersting thread. I don't see much of what people dislike about FB because I block people and pages without a second thought. I have the ad problem sorted with FB Purity. I am not saying its not there, only that its possible to block it out

WaryHiker · 10/03/2026 12:26

BadSkiingMum · 07/03/2026 09:00

I always find these ‘Facebook is dead’ threads quite funny, as people generalise from their own feed/experience. It has 3.07 billion active users and is still the largest social media platform, although Instagram is catching up.

At least half of which are "active" bots.

RampantIvy · 10/03/2026 12:31

I use Facebook to get recommendedations for tradespeople. So far I haven't yet had a dud one.

FourChimneys · 10/03/2026 12:32

godmum56 That is incredibly rude. Are you like that in real life too?

I am approaching elderly. I use Facebook for three specific groups related to my interests and two connected to the business I run.

I also use it for local news, both to read it and also to share eg updates on flooding.

At no time do I come across hate, especially as hate posts are not allowed on my town's page.

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 10/03/2026 22:54

I can’t believe the few people I know who still persist in posting regularly on it. It’s very cringe.

Onthemoooove · 11/03/2026 07:46

@IThankFuckTheSunIsHere! I know! This feeling has increased even in the few days since starting this thread. I just checked my feed by specifically selecting "friends" and there have been 9 friends posts in the last 24 hours. Mostly the usual suspects just sharing memes & other rubbish, no actual news, plus one "happy heavenly birthday" post which I find especially cringeworthy - why??? I'm actually not sure if/when I'll actually post again, just don't feel compelled to do so anymore. It seems most of my friends feel the same (mainly mid 50s) I might post an occasional update every few months to keep up with a few distant friends but that'll be it. I'll keep it for the groups though as some of them are actually useful......

OP posts:
Sofado · 11/03/2026 07:54

I use it a lot for the groups I’m in - all private groups. It’s how we exchange information, research, support etc. I never use Facebook for friends and family, and I have no Facebook friends.

HollyHoly · 11/03/2026 08:29

I use it more for groups (professional and health) but notice that people are posting less even in groups. I’m certainly relying on AI more for things that I used to ask on FB and wonder if others are doing the same.

SideshowAuntSallyxx · 11/03/2026 10:52

Have to say even my local groups have quietened down. There's been 2 new posts in 2 days. Obviously parking gate and dog shit gate still get posted regularly. But since the local criminal was put behind bars all the "my car got broken into last night" posts have stopped.

I do love a good parking gate post though. Its amusing watching people bitch about someone when they could just knock on their door and get it sorted in minutes.

Merida46 · 11/03/2026 22:22

Facebook is full of stuff I have no interest in and even if I prioritise friends feed it reverts to ALL when I leave the page. As for marketplace, it is full of morons who can't be arsed to read the description of the article for sale!
