To think Facebook has dropped off a cliff lately?

Usage has been declining for a while but I've noticed this year hardly any of my friends post anymore, even the most prolific ones have cut right down. This has resulted in me hardly bothering anymore - what's the point if noone's reading? I've only posted twice since Christmas and the thought of doing so almost makes me cringe.Really not a bad thing imo. However, the groups are still very active so I'll keep it for them, I really like how most of them will let you post using a nickname now which I really like for privacy....

Facebook is an absolute sewer now. The only reason I don’t delete it is that its my only way of contacting some people now. Mindless lowest common denominator AI slop.

MidnightPatrol · 07/03/2026 09:07

I don’t think people I know have been posting regularly for 5+ years.

It’s the domain of the over 60s.

It’s a nightmare anyway - all promoted content (usually AI slop) and advertising.

I always find these ‘Facebook is dead’ threads quite funny, as people generalise from their own feed/experience. It has 3.07 billion active users and is still the largest social media platform, although Instagram is catching up.

I am interested in how they get these figures and weed out bots? I see lots of "active users" who are clearly bots posting on there, taking over feeds completely which is the problem. People can tell it's not humans interacting but clickbait driven to make money and political influence. See all the "likes" artists can buy on insta...it's just fake feeding fake.

That doesn’t mean it’s popular in the uk. Meta is like tobacco companies- working their way around the world as countries fall out of love with their app

I go on for my interest groups, the rest is bin fodder generally. Local and national politicians have filled it with PR and promises, none of which are seemingly real or have improved the world around me. Now we have posts justifying council tax rises, like we believe our money is being wisely spent!

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 07/03/2026 09:12

I also really like the ability to post anonymously but I find when people do, you always get the group bully asking “why post anonymously?” Sometimes with comments. I once commented “you always ask this. Some people aren’t fans of the internet knowing their every move. Some are just not keen on having people know their personal business or form incorrect opinions on them based on things they may post. Clearly not something you are bothered about” or along those lines and he just commented “weird” 🤣🤣🤣 it’s always a group of men that do it but I know very personal things about their lives because they post so freely on the group pages.

I solely use it for local news and reels but the reels are getting frustrating because anything longer than 10 seconds has adverts throughout.

BlackCat14 · 07/03/2026 09:13

I lived in America for a while, made a lot of friends there, and they very actively post on Facebook, so I enjoy seeing what they’re up to nowadays and keeping in touch. I also use it as a bit of a photo storing thing as well. Since I was 17 I’ve had Facebook and every year I’ve done a photo album called 2009, 2010 etc and uploaded all my photos from that year. It’s the quickest and easiest way to access any old photos so I love looking back at them. I’m still going strong with my 2026 album now, I don’t care if anyone else looks at them, it’s just a handy/easy space for me to store all my photos.

LauraIpsum · 07/03/2026 09:13

I reactivated my facebook last autumn after 18 years of not using it, due to a growing number of local businesses use it as their main website. I got particularly fed up with not being able to read pubs' Sunday lunch menus, info about what's going on at DC's school etc. It's a bit annoying that organisations use it as their main tool of communication given that it has limited access to those not logged in. So I gave in and now use it to follow local stuff, but won't ever use it for posting again.

Agree with you but I think I would be considered an active user and I don’t post unless it’s answering a local group question or asking one. If it was full of people like me it would be really boring. May as well be the next door app - which is where all of the bellends seem to have gone.

Thereissnowinmywellies · 07/03/2026 09:14

Must admit I've never understood the appeal of FB, X and all the rest, it's not for me. I like to live in the moment not through a phone lens and I'm not interested in reading stuff from same random banging on about their 'scrummy' breakfast yes, it's porrige with fruit dumped on the top, or endless photos of their kids.
Before some idiot says it, no that doesn't make me feel superior because I don't do socials, mine is a way of living and I have very little stress in my life as a result because I'm not worrying about keeping up to date with decorating trends, are my boobs big enough and why hasn't my bf liked my 15 photo of my cat asleep today.
Everyone to their own, if you like socials that's great, just not my thing.

NoraLuka · 07/03/2026 09:15

You can post a photo of a lost dog in our local group and it will be reunited with its owner in a couple of hours! There are a few groups like that which I find useful and they are the only reason I’m still on FB, the sheer volume of AI crap is off putting otherwise.

VividDeer · 07/03/2026 09:16

Instagram can't compare for interest groups and local news.

TheIceBear · 07/03/2026 09:19

Mikabli · 07/03/2026 08:38

Maybe its just demographics. Im in my 30s and all my friends use it as does my neice and her friends who are 21. I know a couple of people who quit it but i would say itd very much alive and kicking. I find the groups very useful.

I’m in my 30s and nearly everyone I know has quit. My mum is in her 70s and still uses it. It’s awful it’s just full of uninteresting reels and advertisements. I thought it was great back in then day years ago. I was a bit reluctant to delete it cos of the groups but in the end I weighted up the pros and cons and got rid because I felt like it was mindless scrolling and no one I actually knew was posting anything

Somersetbaker · 07/03/2026 09:19

I think in terms of updating friends and relatives, about your life, there are better platforms. Whatsapp groups allow you to target information and you know the recipient will at least see a message notification.. I use FaceBook for marketplace, local news and information, and groups connected with my hobbies, I've never posted anything directly on to my own page.

I imagine I am considered an active user, because I use it to keep up with an interact with a group for my daughter’s sports. I haven’t personally posted on my page for approx 4 years though.

Agree with this I had to set up an instagram account specifically to book a restaurant that strangely only took bookings via instagram . That restaurant has since closed unsurprisingly. It was a bit bizarre but so many restaurants just use Facebook or instagram as a website . Which is lazy in my opinion

bringthewashingin · 07/03/2026 09:22

I haven’t used for many years! I got fed up looking at two champagne glasses or someone’s dinner! I use WhatsApp to share photos with friends/family.

Isobel201 · 07/03/2026 09:22

I have some friends who are quite active and will post, so you cannot base your own experience and think its the same as everyone else.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 07/03/2026 09:25

I hardly use it anymore. It's full of ads and irrelevant content. You used to be able to scroll and catch up on what friends and family were doing. Not anymore.

TheIceBear · 07/03/2026 09:27

Another reason I quit was because of all the blatant racist and hateful comments I would see on Facebook . There doesn’t seem to be any restrictions on what people can post so if a news article would come up about something like asylum seekers for example it would just be full of disgusting hateful comments. Also an incel type of article with disparaging remarks about women came up on my feed once and because I clicked on it my feed was just full of horrible incel articles for ages afterwards. I find it quite toxic to be honest.

columnatedruinsdomino · 07/03/2026 09:28

I love FB. My friends rarely post but I’m part of lots of interest groups and the local gossip and selling pages are a hoot. Never update my own status, can’t imagine anyone would be interested!

itsthetea · 07/03/2026 09:28

It’s a nightmare as it is the easiest platform for open community groups to use but the chances of finding these groups gets ever smaller and you can’t just check your feed, you need to check the groups pages for updates individually or you will miss stuff

and please I don’t use make up at all and never had so stop the endless “many people don’t know this “ ads

either they are looking at my photos and thinking “she needs serious help” or they are not looking at my make
up free photos at all.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 07/03/2026 09:29

you have to click feeds and then select friends.

but you’re right. Facebook have destroyed themselves by filling our feeds with junk. People are definitely posting less. I certainly am.

Sadcafe · 07/03/2026 09:39

Is it that people don’t post anything or is it the algorithms it uses is more likely to show what are effectively adverts/ stories it thinks you will read. I very rarely post anything on Facebook, when I do it’s usually around fund raising for a local charity or sharing something similar, occasionally use it to say happy birthday to old friends and colleagues, do quite enjoy reading on the group pages about town I used to live in or old school, but yes, actual posts from friends are virtually non existent

PumpkinSpicedTea · 07/03/2026 09:40

I want to delete it but like many of you, I use Groups and marketplace.
