Is this illegal?

Discovered someone is cheating on his wife and have contacted two of his siblings to tell them so they can surreptitiously investigate and look out for the wife. I can't prove it as it would be hearsay, but I hoped they'd try and look at his devices or keep an ear out to gain evidence. Have I gone too far? I absolutely know this is happening.

I would say if its true and provable, and its not excessive messaging then why wouldn't it be?

Shatteredallthetimelately · 04/03/2026 14:15

If you're so sure it's happening and feel you need to be involved why aren't you letting the wife know?

MatildaTheCat · 04/03/2026 14:16

Not illegal to give them the heads up but could be messy if they resorted to illegal methods of investigation.

Are you sure his own siblings would have the best interests of his wife as a priority though?

LIZS · 04/03/2026 14:17

What is it to you? Why would siblings choose to get involved? It does seem like you are sticking your nose in on basis of gossip.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 04/03/2026 14:17

What's it got to do with his siblings?

Mumsnet doesn't like that. I'd be accused of blowing her life up, of interfering, told she probably knows anyway, they are swingers, that sort of thing. I thought this way someone could try and find some evidence and then confront him.

It is not gossip.

Weird post. Why would it be illegal? Why not tell the wife? Why would siblings of the cheat care?

It would depend on how you found out. If you hacked into his computer, planted a bug, you're his doctor, etc. then it could be illegal.

None of those.

Are you the person he is having the affair with @CarlStoleMyUnderpants ?

Swiftie1878 · 04/03/2026 14:20

Why don’t you just mind your own business?

Well it’s obviously not illegal - why would you think it was?

Why do you care what a load of strangers on the internet think?

ArmchairSuccubus · 04/03/2026 14:20

You really would not do something in real life because you think posters on Mumsnet might object with their words on a screen?

dadtoateen · 04/03/2026 14:20

Why do you feel it is any of your business?

plentyofsunshine · 04/03/2026 14:20

Is the wife faithful? Sometimes both parties cheat and turn a blind eye to it.

SincerelyDoubtIt · 04/03/2026 14:21

Why on earth do you think his siblings would look out for his wife, not him?

ColdAsAWitches · 04/03/2026 14:21

I think its bizarre that you've gone to HIS siblings to investigate on behalf of his wife. Why would they believe you? Why would they investigate instead of telling him what you've said? Why assume they would take the wife's side? It doesn't seem the normal way to respond to this. If you're confident you know, it's up to you to do this, not outsource your interferance.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 04/03/2026 14:22

If I was the wife I would be furious you went to my siblings behind my back rather than approaching me.

ArmchairSuccubus · 04/03/2026 14:22

NB IME a family circle their wagons around a miscreant so you chose the wrong side to 'investigate', sorry.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/03/2026 14:22

Highly illegal 😱I'm surprised you even have to ask. Be prepared to get your door kicked in by the police and think of the shame when you're led out of your house in cuffs.
What will the neighbours say 😮
Tread carefully op

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 04/03/2026 14:22

Are you thinking you might have slandered the person if you’re wrong? That’s the only way I can see you might have any sort of legal issue, and even then I think they’d have to prove loss to be able to make any claim against you.

Why you haven’t just told the wife I have no idea, given you feel the need to get involved at all.

Needmorelego · 04/03/2026 14:24

Are you related to any of these people?
Does this affair actually affect you in any way?
Really...why is it your business?
