You know there are us airbases in the UK in a big arc about 100 miles north and west around London. All of which could be a target.

....But for the benefit of the nervous and context they are not a target for any missile Iran have got in their arsenal or what is left of it...even Cyprus is a stretch.

DarkForces · 28/02/2026 17:21

I'd have thought it was one of the safest places to go given the military bases.

Not if they’re targeted!

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 01/03/2026 07:58

Btw wherever you go the biggest risk is your drive to the airport

Exactly. In general, people are crap at assessing actual risk.

@notabingthing You are being sensible and realistic to prepare to cancel your holiday. There are so many people on mumsnet making light of this war that I suspect a propaganda campaign.

I’m making light of this… We don’t know how this will play out, just look at Iraq and its aftermath! But it doesn’t follow that people should think there’s any realistic prospect of Cyprus being under missile attack from Iran in May. That just indicates a complete lack of knowledge of the reality of this situation.

Isthisright220 · 01/03/2026 08:06

I mean. Do you just enjoy drama? There’s no logic in that.

Pomegranatecarnage · 01/03/2026 08:08

whiteroseredrose · 28/02/2026 16:28

Yikes. I’m going to Jordan in a few weeks and am not planning on cancelling.

So am I, but the government have just advised against all travel to Jordan- so insurance will be invalid, and flights likely cancelled.

whiteroseredrose · 01/03/2026 08:18

Damn.

somanychristmaslights · 01/03/2026 08:22

If your worried op then just cancel and lose your deposit. You’ll only be worrying until you need to pay the balance anyway. Cancel now and find somewhere else and you won’t need to think of it again.

Depends how far ahead people are looking.

I'd expect Jordan/Jordanian airspace to open for business fairly quickly.

Where did you read this?

The FCO website still has the bulk of Jordan in green. The only red bit is in the vicinity of the Syrian border, which has been the case for a long time.

Realised I missed a vital “not” from the first sentence of my post!

Yes this is my line of thinking ! Already looking at the Balearics ☀️

Ffs calm down, iam going to Egypt next week, flights at moment still going ahead

roses2 · 01/03/2026 09:15

Currently watching BBC One with Laura Kusenberg and they’ve just mentioned missiles fired towards the British bases in Cyprus. Very worrying, seems to be aimed and anywhere and anyone.

FCO will start cancelling flights and then people can get refunds.

I don't think it's necessarily just about direct hits and anyway we have no idea yet how this terrible situation will escalate.
My comment was addressing the fact that posters piled on quickly to several threads, including those where people in Dubai were expressing their fear, saying that there was no cause for alarm. There certainly is.

PoppyFleur · 01/03/2026 09:46

notnorman · 01/03/2026 07:50

Not if they’re targeted!

There are extensive security measures in place to protect the bases. Additionally, Russia and China (sympathetic to Iran) have significant financial interests in Cyprus. I doubt Iran wants to antagonise its allies.

@notabingthingHaving said that, a holiday is supposed to be enjoyable. If you are concerned book somewhere else, there is no point paying to feel anxious.

boatyardblues · 01/03/2026 09:49

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 28/02/2026 16:27

If you cancel you will lose your money.
Just wait.
If the FCO put out advice advising against non-essential travel the company will refund you.

Assuming OP has travel insurance, exactly this. My policy has a specific exclusion about the policyholder’s disinclination to travel. If the FCO advice changes to advise against travel I am covered.

Notsosweetcaroline · 01/03/2026 07:23

Cyprus is not at the top of irans hit list, give over.

snd you won’t stop people flying to go on holiday, it’s also not the other side of the world.

I bet you feel a bit silly now

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/02/2026 16:28

It's the best part of 1200 miles from Cyprus to Tehran. Do you expect somebody to avoid travelling to Leicester from Newcastle because there's a volcano erupting outside Reykjavik or problems with rush hour traffic in Moscow?

It's about 240 to Israel (please try and use autocorrect if you aren't able to spell the country's name). Best cancel that Leicester visit if Plymouth Argyle are playing at home and getting a bit rowdy next week, too.

If you are referring to Akrotiri it's RAF, one of the UK Sovereign Base areas on the island.

I was keeping an eye on Skyscanner yesterday. There was an ‘unmarked’ plane out of Akrotiri patrolling over the Arabian peninsula. I’m assuming it was one of the British defensive interventions mentioned in the media yesterday.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 01/03/2026 10:05

If you’ve got insurance and it gets cancelled then you’ll be fine

Mildorado · 01/03/2026 10:08

Yes, 2 missiles fired at Cyprus, on the news

I wasn’t. The post I was quoting had been talking about a different (Cyprus air force base). But yes the raf have a base too. But I think the USA use the other one more
