You might only have paid a deposit, but that doesn't mean you aren't liable for the full amount if you cancel. Check your t&c before you make any decision.

RedRiverShore6 · 03/03/2026 15:32

We cancelled a holiday in covid and just lost the deposit as it was before 12 weeks or whatever it was, bear in mind though that if you paid a low deposit as a special offer you have to pay the extra to make it up to the full deposit which would have been due.

My family in Cyprus (I’m in English/greek Cypriot) are quite concerned, as not to far from Limassol where Akrotiri is. Friends in Nicosia also concerned. Worrying times in that region. If I didn’t have to go I probably wouldn’t.

My Cypriot family are not concerned at all

NewAgeNewMe · 03/03/2026 16:58

Weird how some are and some aren’t. Mine are shit scared, but then I’ve got others, who are still planning to go this weekend. Personally I wouldn’t.

liveforsummer · 03/03/2026 17:38

From my good friend in Cyprus today - Scaremongering headlines are nonsense. There are pictures of burning buildings claiming to be Cyprus that absolutely are not. It’s all nonsense. Life is going on as normal and beach tomorrow. My Cypriot SIL who loves a bit of drama is sharing said scaremongering headlines though 😅

If you cancel 70 days or more ahead of holiday it’s just loss of deposit, it’s 86 days before we’re due to go

We also have a holiday booked for Cyprus on 5th April - have been to Ayia Napa for the past two Easter hols. The recent attacks on the RAF base on the island and direct threats on Cyprus made by Iran given the strategic significance of the island have freaked me out and I have changed our holiday to Lanzarote instead - as it is 30+ days until we go (JUST making it within the window for amendments with Jet2), we have paid £50pp admin fee and any difference in the price of the holiday. As much as I love Cyprus, the situation is too unstable and I would not enjoy the holiday so I feel happier to change it. We have Cyprus holidays booked for October 2026 and April 2027 which we will keep for now, depending on what happens in the coming weeks and months.

This is exactly how I feel. Cyprus is my favourite place to go on holiday, we love the place, but it’s too close to that part of the world for us at the moment. I mean yes, realistically it’ll probably be fine by may but we have to pay a good while before that so we need to make a decision, I’m not happy just waiting and seeing

The Government have still not changed their advice on travel to Cyprus and the travel companies are only cancelling flights a couple of days in advance - there is no way I would have been happy to wait and see.

RedRiverShore6 · 04/03/2026 07:22

I would change it to somewhere else while the somewhere else's are still available if it's half term week you are after.

Its really frustrating they are doing this, so many people in limbo. I’d be happy to pay an admin fee to move it but atm Jet2 are saying its 90% loss if we cancel because we fly in 20 days.

Just woke up to this! I don’t feel so silly now

You were never silly OP

The region is unstable and isn’t going to be safe anytime soon.

RedToothBrush · 04/03/2026 13:35

I wouldn't be too worried about going to Cyprus if I'm honest. Once you are there I don't think it would affect you too much.

The issue for me with Cyprus would be the flights in and out and having to pay for extra nights at a hotel. If you have family you can stay with and it isn't too much of a problem if you get delayed back.

This obviously is going to be an issue for tourists but not so much locals.

Exactly, just go somewhere less "strategic", less in firing range.

Notice none of the people shaming you for wishing to be safe are back now that we were right!

did you manage to get it moved?

There's always dickheads that dont understand Geography and don't listen to the news.

It was very predictable what happened though others will swear blind you were being ridiculous.

They also were the ones who were shocked when we went into lockdown and ridiculed everyone in Jan 2020 going 'errrr this is a problem'. And a whole pile of other world events because they weren't paying attention.

Your question was sensible in the context of the time and always was proportionate.

You are still premature. How do you possibly know what's going to be happening in May?

It's not premature to just want to book and plan a holiday you are certain is going to go ahead and isn't going to stress you out for months wondering about bullshit.

MyTrivia · 05/03/2026 16:43

Cyprus is currently not on the list of places the government is advising not to travel. Turkey and Egypt are though.

It’s quite rude to call other people ‘dickheads who don’t understand geography or listen to the news’ just because Not everyone flies into a panic about stuff like this. What do you think people who live in Cyprus are doing? Fleeing the country? I doubt it.

Last year, I was in Cyprus and my friend texted me to say I should go home because it was near Israel. I would call that neurotic.

I’m not going to be as rude as to call anyone names but according to my friends and family in Cyprus the people listening to the news are the problem here. It’s absolute hysteria. Apparently the drone that landed/was brought down on the runway and minorly damaged a hangar was not even Iranian. They are furious that family back here are getting upset and worried by scary headlines while life is going on as normal.

cerisepink889 · 05/03/2026 19:36

My parents have just cancelled their trip to Cyprus as their friends daughter is a travel consultant and she said that holiday companies will soon be rising prices of their European/mediterean destinations shortly as people will not want to go to Cyprus or Turkey. They had only paid a deposit so they transfered this to another holiday to Tenerife.

They didnt want to risk not being able to go if situation escalates and then having to pay over the odds to go to Spain .

turkey only the bit that borders Syria as has been the case for years.

egypt only the top of the peninsula that joins Israel - also for years. In happier times I’ve travelled to taba and crossed the border into Israel for a trip. Those days are done but hurghada / marsa alam etc are fine for now.

That said things can change on a hairpin and Iran are hitting everything they can reach.

Isn't that the case when most people book holidays in advance? You never know what COULD happen it's never certain a holiday will go ahead though is it? You just can't guarantee that
