Currently watching BBC One with Laura Kusenberg and they’ve just mentioned missiles fired towards the British bases in Cyprus. Very worrying, seems to be aimed and anywhere and anyone.

FCO will start cancelling flights and then people can get refunds.

Shit, really?

Shit, really?

Yes, it's on the news

Cyprus holds the Presidency of the EU until the end of June so will have seriously upped their security for all the Leaders of EU countries, and many many Ministers, visiting over the 6 months. So I would think it is safer than usual, despite what is going on with Israel - Israel’s targets are in the exact opposite direction and Iran knows the EU is not involved in the Israel/US targeting.

AtIusvue · 01/03/2026 10:15

‘British Defence Secretary John Healey tells the Sky News broadcaster that two missiles have been fired in the direction of Cyprus, where thousands of British soldiers are stationed.
“We don’t believe they were targeted at Cyprus, but nevertheless, it’s an example of how there is a very real and rising threat from a regime that is lashing out widely across the region, and that requires us to act,” he said of Saturday’s launches.
Iranian strikes on Saturday landed within a few hundred yards (a few hundred metres) of British troops in Bahrain, the defence secretary said.’

Is there really any need for the fucks sake?

I understand OP (and her DH's) discussions. Nothing wrong with thinking about olanning ahead. We are not going away until much later - August. But it's for a big birthday, so the plan is Bali, and then a few nights in Doha on the way back. We had a vonversation last night about what to do if things get bad.

Reality is, there is nothing we can do rught now other than see how things go over the next fee weeks, and start considering a plan B if we have to (right now it is so far away, we don't have to yet).

However, I would recommend holding off paying the full balance until the day you have to OP - 20th March us still a few weeks away; see what happens between now and then.

NotMeAtAll · 01/03/2026 10:20

Check that your insurance covers it. Sometimes war and government directives aren't covered. I wasn't covered during the airport shutdown in 2010 (ash cloud) because the airport closures were government directives.

Things will probably look very different in a few days anyway.

Shit, really?

I’ve got family living in Cyprus and yes it’s true. I’ve travelled there many times when there’s been unrest in the Middle East and been fine but I do understand why you’d be nervous, it feels different this time for some reason. I’d wait and see what happens, worst case scenario is you have to change your holiday destination, if you do the Canary Islands are a similar flight time and will have good weather.

dapsnotplimsolls · 01/03/2026 10:21

Given the new information, I'd cancel and re-book somewhere else.

Whatwhat123 · 01/03/2026 10:39

It’s just mad that everyone was saying there’s such a low chance of anything ever happening and hours later there’s missiles heading towards Cyprus. I’d rather be cautious and go somewhere else as you haven’t paid the balance yet.

BaronessBomburst · 01/03/2026 10:50

Who have you booked with? They may let you transfer your deposit to another holiday. Utimately they'll earn more money from you holidaying through them than you going elsewhere, whilst they keep the deposit.

NewZebra · 01/03/2026 10:56

Funny how people on here all back people cancelling their holidays to the US because they “might get rounded up by ICE” but this is “ridiculous” 😂

notabingthing · 01/03/2026 09:00

Yes this is my line of thinking ! Already looking at the Balearics ☀️

Any sympathy for the people in Iran? Or is it all good as long as you get your ☀️ ?

I get that people are naturally concerned about their flights and money but you seem a bit too blasé.

Possibly because people are worried about the people who may get bombed to death and couldn’t care less whether OP goes on holiday or not.

Newname71 · 01/03/2026 10:59

If you’re going to worry about it then cancel and go somewhere else. The run up and the holiday are meant to be enjoyable, not have you spending the time worrying. Go to Spain instead. 😊

notimagain · 01/03/2026 11:07

The exact wording used by minister is really kind of important:

Was it UK.bases targetted?
Was it "aimed at Cyprus"
Or was it "in direction of Cyprus?

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2026 11:09

If you've only paid the deposit and you have until 20th March id sit on it for two weeks then make a decision - the travel advice may or may not change in that time.

Personally if the situation hasn't improved significantly I'd write off the deposit and go somewhere else.

It's just not worth the stress nor the worry plus you don't want to get to get caught in a more complex situation if other options are available.

But crucially you do have a little time here to play with so don't do anything just yet.

The minister can't say the UK based was being targeted for all kinds of political reasons unless the government wants to actively join in with Israel and the US.

He is going to downplay the issue regardless. The fact they've said it at all says there is concern. Especially since Oman - a neutral - has been actively targeted.

I'd be watching with caution.

Very much agree, especially with regard to the choice of words used.

That's plausible but also possible we're being softened up to accept involvement without seeming too keen at the prospect. Maybe to give the impression we are responding to a changing situation rather than seeking a justification to do something we planned. I'm open minded but sceptical about everything we're told.

How dreadful. I definitely couldn't relax seeing a deadly missile fly across the sky knowing it is probably destined to kill and injure people.

I thought the same. Not really a 😆 situation.

I saw it on BBC tv 1.5 hours ago, it’s now in the Independent, BBC and Daily Mail websites as a smaller heading.
