Possibly because people are worried about the people who may get bombed to death and couldn’t care less whether OP goes on holiday or not.

Hate it when people post stuff like this.

It is possible to be concerned about both things at the same time.

That's plausible but also possible we're being softened up to accept involvement without seeming too keen at the prospect. Maybe to give the impression we are responding to a changing situation rather than seeking a justification to do something we planned. I'm open minded but sceptical about everything we're told.

I doubt this is the explanation. I do think it would be more difficult if a missile were to hit Cyprus for the UK to maintain a none aggressive position though. It would make us look weak. We'd be looking at a direct military attack on the UK.

I do think the government does want to stay out of it at this stage.

PenelopeAsks · 01/03/2026 11:52

I think the biggest issue for tourists moving forward will be a return to more stringent security rules when flying. The treat of terrorism is only going to increase, sadly.

NormasArse · 01/03/2026 11:42

I thought the same. Not really a 😆 situation.

Of course it isn’t ! If you knew my mum then you’d understand the 😆 it was at her, not the situation. My god this place, picked apart like fucking bones

Agree.
It’s pathetic.

It's the best part of 1200 miles from Cyprus to Tehran. Do you expect somebody to avoid travelling to Leicester from Newcastle because there's a volcano erupting outside Reykjavik or problems with rush hour traffic in Moscow?

It's about 240 to Israel (please try and use autocorrect if you aren't able to spell the country's name). Best cancel that Leicester visit if Plymouth Argyle are playing at home and getting a bit rowdy next week, too.

Imagine being so smug, googling distances and correcting spellings when all the while you’re completely missing the point 🤪

TBH I'm not sure the rules have ever been made more liberal, it's simply a case that the newer tech (especially the new scanners) have made it easier to screen to the required standard.

This. The tech has improved. Security hasn't got more lax.

Any sympathy for the people in Iran? Or is it all good as long as you get your ☀️ ?

I get that people are naturally concerned about their flights and money but you seem a bit too blasé.

What the hell do you expect me to be like ? I’d like to know if you’ve had a holiday in the last 4 years ?!
Of course I have sympathy, but I also don’t live in Iran, don’t have any family in Iran, nor do I know any Iranians. I can still have sympathy and concern and root for the Iranian people while still looking forward to a well earned holiday you know. If you expect me to be sat at home in front of the news crying then you’re mistaken, we still have lives to live here in the uk that were very lucky to be able to live the way we do.

Military bases in Cyprus have been hit.

Your analogies are wide off the mark.

No one is expecting you to be crying and wringing your hands, equally no one cares when you had a holiday.

Exactly, so of course the 😆 and ☀️ emojis when people are about to die is going to rub people up the wrong way.

And that is what can happen overnight these things move quickly. I’m frankly astounded how far the Iranians have gone already. The UAE hit surprised me the most.

@notabingthingif you call holiday company to change they will charge a small fee to change holiday. When I changed Cyprus to turkey last year they charged £60 per person fee to change plus any difference in hotel.

you are being sensible and looking out for your family. All the people who have come after you on here would be sorry if something happens and air space is closed and they’re stuck somewhere being attacked.

I travel extensively including some places others considered dangerous but this is an actual war zone. Hope you find somewhere lovely for your holiday. We do enough worrying day in day out at home, you don’t need to be scared to go on your hard earned holiday.

This is absolutely NOT correct!!! You are scaremongering now. Missiles were sent ‘in the direction of Cyprus’. Could have been off the original target of Israel, could have been sent from Iran and intended to land somewhere in between Iran and Cyprus.

Currently no FCO warning for Cyprus so clearly not enough of an issue for people to worry about at this specific point in time.

@NeverDropYourMooncup you’re incredibly ignorant. Your examples are silly. There is heightened geopolitical tension in the region, and Cyprus (because of proximity and foreign bases) is watching that situation closely. So the OP is wise to be cognizant of the situation. OP I would wait and see. Got a few months to go yet.

US base hit was the report.

If taking direct quotes from the UK defence secretary no UK base has been hit.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey reported that two missiles from Iran were fired towards Cyprus, where British military bases are located.
At the same time, he noted that these missiles were not aimed at the UK bases.
Healey also clarified: Iran's actions show "how indiscriminate Tehran's retaliation is" in response to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

I’m not sure it matters if they were deliberately fired there or if they accidentally strayed into Cyprus, but I think it’s probably legitimate concern from the OP.

No FCO warning for a lot of places, but they are coming because this has really escalated in the last 48 hours.

gototogo · 01/03/2026 12:40

no need to panic but this is a lesson for everyone to ensure they buy decent travel insurance as soon as they book (it’s too late if there’s an ongoing crisis) and if you are risk averse book abta bonded package because if the foreign office puts a warning out they will let you move the destination, the date, potentially cancel and most of all if problems occur whilst you are traveling will help you get home. Failing that always book with a British or European airline as they have strict rules on getting people home (and funding accommodation until they can) unlike other countries

I'm just looking at the news reports and I agree with PP the wording is important and politicians know this which is why I don't believe the UK government can or will stay out of it. News reports lead with the headline "missiles fired towards UK military bases in Cyprus" before the article clarifies that the government doesn't believe Cyprus was the target. I don't believe the media or government are stupid, they know exactly how those headlines will be read.
