To not understand why fly tipping is happening on such a large scale?

If you have a car, surely you can just go to the dump? I mean, it's free 🤷‍♀️

Why is flytipping on an industrial scale happening, what has changed to cause this to happen? Have industrial sites been shut down?

Genuinely don't get it, just seen it on the news

Because anything other than domestic waste they charge for. My dp has a white can he uses for cycling but he cant take stuff to the tip in it because they assume it's a business use and charge him.

Peridoteage · 25/02/2026 19:04

Small businesses/tradespeople who don't want to pay for skips to dispose of waste.

Lougle · 25/02/2026 19:04

You used to be able to turn up at the tip whenever you wanted. People tend to do big clear outs, which means several trips to the tip in one day. Now, you have to book and you get one half-hour slot, which doesn't allow people to load, drop, return, load and drop.

People have smallish vehicles so hire someone to take their rubbish away, but they have to have a licence to get rid of waste. Cowboys don't get the licence and just dump it.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/02/2026 19:04

Because people are cunts

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/02/2026 19:05

I knew that vans had to check in but still thought they were free!

I can see the need to regulate waste but if the product is that people are dumping stuff in the streets...

I agree with this ! The dumps near where I live don't charge for multiple trips so have done 3 or 4 in a day in my little fiesta

I'm often at the dump actually and have noticed weird looks from the men - maybe they think i am a businesswoman 😳

Because we have a throwaway, hyper consuming culture which generates obscene amounts of waste. Perfectly functional furniture, kitchens and bathrooms being binned because they're slightly old fashioned, for example.

Because criminal gangs have cottoned on and will remove waste more conveniently and cheaply than the council will.

Because council budgets are extremely tight and they don't have the resources to collect for free.

StedSarandos · 25/02/2026 19:07

People don't have cars and pay a local dodgy person they find on Facebook to take it away. They have no idea they need to check that person is legit. And even when they are legit they sometimes flytip their crap anyway to save time.

Businesses that don't want to pay or wait to use the tip.

Scummy households who think their waste should be left for everyone else to deal with.

I deal with a lot of local small flytipping, our council are pretty good at clearing it and popping a sign up when I report it. I've even picked through bags to find addressed envelopes so the council have proof where it originated from.

JohnofWessex · 25/02/2026 19:07

Basically waste crime isn't enforced properly - look at the massive illegal dumps that are being 'discovered' and criminals are finding easy money in it with minimal risk

clarrylove · 25/02/2026 19:13

Obviously we don't fly tip but our family car is a type which is classed as a commercial vehicle (even though it isn't!). Very few tip spots for that, normally have to book a month in advance. Totally impractical!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/02/2026 19:14

We used a Man-With-A-Van clearance for my DParents house . (There were reasons why we couldn't use a skip/tip/council collection)

Checked them out beforehand . They were only licenced to a set number of van loads , maybe one a day .
Another company had to get the load weighed so part of the fee was time waiting for the weighbridge .

Someone dumped some tyres in our road , maybe they thought they'd be taken, but within days a huge pile of rubbish joined them.

Our skip had someone's bags in it before my DH went back to it !

Council services have been cut and the costs of waste removal have been transferred from taxpayers in general to the individual.

Common changes include: tip opening hours have been cut (less convenient + more congested) and/or you have to book in advance, council doorstep collection prices have increased, community skips no longer happen, charges introduced for garden waste, longer gaps between household waste collections.

Plus cuts to council budgets means fewer environmental officers working to investigate and prosecute fly tipping.

Beekman · 25/02/2026 19:19

The sheer number of high turnover rental properties don’t help. People leave stuff and greedy landlords just throw it out rather than disposing of it properly

Lougle · 25/02/2026 19:22

Oh also, charging for DIY waste. £5 per sheet of plasterboard, regardless of size. £4 per bag of rubble, but only allowed 4 bags per month. The list goes on. It's impossible for people to do a basic DIY project and get rid of their waste.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 25/02/2026 19:30

In my area the council changed bin collection to fortnightly. Then a few months later said there’d been an increase in fly tipping.

I remember arranging for the council to collect an old fridge. I had to leave it outside prior. Other advice I’d seen said take the door off in case children climb in and suffocate. So I did. The council only took the main fridge and not the door. Because that’s 2 items not one!

Liverpool has a great scheme. Bulky bobs.

Those canals full of rubbish are so depressing.

AndrewFormallyKnownAsPrince · 25/02/2026 19:35

I don’t agree with fly tipping at all. However my local council tips have closed 4 tips near us. The next closest is now a 45 mile round trip. The nearest tip not in our council is 15 mins away. Technically it’s fly tipping to take the rubbish to the closest tip but when the bins haven’t come yet again because it’s ’snowing’ it’s bloody irritating

Dinosweetpea · 25/02/2026 19:37

Mine charges for anything they think is from a household renovation, once tried to charge me £8 for one broken toilet seat! Had to take it home again! Ours also regularly has a massive queue and you need documents/bills to prove you live in the area which is increasingly hard now everything is online. No excuse for fly tipping but the councils do not make it easy!

Namenamchange · 25/02/2026 19:38

It’s not free, at ours anything that can be considered to be home improvements is chargeable.

Why have they done that? Charging for diy waste?

Idontspeakgermansorry · 25/02/2026 19:39

I like the system in Germany. They have a bulk trash day every 6 months, where you can put out furniture, electronics and hazardous materials, and they come and collect it.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 25/02/2026 19:41

I do think councils are complicating matters by bin collections / tip rules.

But I also think manufacturers should look at longevity of their goods. Mobile phones designed to be obsolete after so many updates and no longer supported doesn’t feel right.

Over consumerism too has a part to play.

Ablondiebutagoody · 25/02/2026 19:41

My local council makes it incredibly hard to dispose of stuff and lots of it you have to pay for or can only get rid of tiny amounts. The DIY waste rules are particularly frustrating. So instead, people get a bloke round to collect it. Costs the same and they don't have to do anything. Bloke then dumps it. To be honest, I've been very tempted to fly tip some myself.

In my area the council changed bin collection to fortnightly. Then a few months later said there’d been an increase in fly tipping.

They introduced some of the smallest black wheely bins in country then few years later moved to 3 week collections and now there is a huge fly tipping issue.

TBF the recyling curb collection is really extensive and good and there is a paid for bulky item collection by council. However doesn't take a lot for households to miss a three week collection and waste piles up.

Also you can no longer put houshold waste in public bins - they all have stickers saying council fine for it now.

I know rest of family after bereavement struggled with amount of stuff to get rid of and the reduce tip opening hours made it all so much harder.
