To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

Maybe send a grateful for thinking of me message… but how about?

Is he/she paying? If so, I would not complain. Could you go somewhere else with someone else ( not sure if you have family) family or friends?

I’ll go

Same here!

Id rather go away for a couple of nights or even an extreme day trip than be bored at home

Not everyone is bored at home though. My home is never boring. It's a source of comfort and delight. I love foreign travel too. But if the price to pay is 4/5/6 hours on planes trains and automobiles for a day away then. . . . . .that's more hassle than it's worth.

I wouldn't consider that a stress free break. I'd be slightly annoyed too.

Lots of people have to wait til June, or August if they've got kids, for a holiday.

YANBU - taking unnecessary short haul flights for 1.5 days of 'holiday' is pretty grim when respected scientists are literally begging us to change our habits and take the climate crisis seriously. I'd like my daughter to have a future please.

This is exactly what I was going to say.

I don't know if this is an issue for you OP, but if would be for me, and for this reason, tho in a way I would appreciate the fact my partner had tried to do something nice, I would also be very annoyed that he thought I would appreciate something so harmful to the environment..... But I do tend to make my views on unnecessary flights quite clear, so any partner I had would definitely know that this was my view on the matter.

Yes, it's quite strange the number of people saying they'd love this so OP should do it too.

You can have a 'city break' in Gran Canaria - Las Palmas, the capital and where the airport is located is a proper city. It has a population of nearly 400,000! Lots of shops, restaurants, an IKEA even. There's an historic area with museums, cobbled streets, culture etc and there's a beach on the edge of the city. Don't go to the touristy development on the south coast - stay in LP and travel with cabin bag or underseat bag only so you get out of the airport quickly.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 26/02/2026 22:33

£40 doesn’t get you far in the uk. Hand luggage only so limited airport faff or packing stress needed, have a glass of wine and read a nice book or watch a film on the plane, stay somewhere near the airport, lovely dinner Saturday night, a full day in the sun or exploring on Saturday and Monday morning. A lovely treat imo. Assuming you don’t have young kids, I’m not dragging my 3 anywhere near an airport for anything less than a week 😂

I hope you lead by example & take all your holidays in your own garden

I’m deffo not spoilt at all
its the fact it’s only going to be 1 day in the sun
We will get there and he will say he is too tired to do anything the first night.
So the second day will come and go and if it’s a rubbish day …we have travelled all that way for mothing
I Honestly would of preferred a couple of nights in the lakes or something
obviously I’m going and I’ve said Thankyou

If it helps, I would feel the same. I could go to see a place I love for 2 days in a couple of weeks. 2 hours in the car there and the same back.

Decided that after all the faffing to sort out other things to make it doable, I would be too knackered to enjoy it, so sacked it off.

You have 9 hour total in flights, plus the airport arsing around, all for ...what? At best 24 "holiday" hours (assuming your prediction about DP being correct and you know better than we do)? Nah, fuck that.

Nice thought, which I would be grateful for.
Poor execution, for which I wouldnt be.
As for being guilted into going because other people have low expectations and are grateful for crumbs.....not a fucking chance!

How dare he, who do he think he is, thinking about you, giving you a lovely surprise....What planet are you on, you are very ungrateful, l hope he went with someone else and left you at home, sulking...

I would be incredibly annoyed at the total lack of consultation too and agree that the flight times are ridiculous.

See OP's second update for how 'lovely' it's likely to be (clue: it's not). How dare he indeed.
