To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

inkyspells · 24/02/2026 18:10

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

I’m deffo not spoilt at all
its the fact it’s only going to be 1 day in the sun
We will get there and he will say he is too tired to do anything the first night.
So the second day will come and go and if it’s a rubbish day …we have travelled all that way for mothing
I Honestly would of preferred a couple of nights in the lakes or something
obviously I’m going and I’ve said Thankyou

Surely if you can manage the lakes without sun, you can find things to do in Gran Canaria without sun?

I love a quick trip; Ive seen so many brilliant places by popping there for a day or two

Did you have other big plans for that Sunday?

I've been to lots of places where I've only spent a day or so.

You can either have a negative attitude and moan, or you can make the most of your time there.

But if I were him I'd tell you to fuck off and would go on my own.

Wow. Aren’t you lovely?

OP is going to go and has thanked him. She has come onto MN to see how others would feel about this. He has absolutely no grounds to tell her to fuck off. And if he was to tell her to fuck off for having a different opinion to him, then she absolutely should LTB.

For £40 I think that's a bargain! I would have a fun weekend and be grateful he planned it!

Planned? In what way is this planned? It sounds like the equivalent of garage flowers for Mother’s Day!

He’s paid for flights because they had a dirt cheap offer on. Presumably it only includes carry on mini under seat bag. Will that be adequate? You normally have to pay extra for a 10kg overhead locker bag.

How are they getting to the airport? (We live over an hour away to our nearest airport by car, 2.5hrs by bus.)

Has he booked decent bed bug free accommodation or a noisy club 18-30 type dive?

If I’m spending some of my time and money on a short break, I’d want it to be worth the effort and expense. Luckily, I trust my DH to put in a fair bit of effort when booking holidays and he always consults me before going ahead.

Our first holiday together was a 3 week trip to Borneo staying in 5 star accommodation that he organised fairly last minute as we hadn’t been together very long at that point. We had our own boat and guide accompanying us on the river trips and it was magical, especially the night cruise.

NoSoupForU · 25/02/2026 12:13

I also see that people have weird views of travel. I'm never in an airport long enough to be hanging around. I arrive with enough time to park, get through security (fast pass) and stroll to my gate with enough time to grab a coffee and pastry on the way.

On the plane I read. I enjoy reading, and having however many hours to sit and do it is nice. I could sit and read for 4 hours no problem!

I don't have luggage. And there's no "getting to the resort" as I just hop straight on a bus or train and go somewhere.

WestwardHo1 · 25/02/2026 12:13

I wish I had a partner this thoughtless and annoying.

You DO sound spoilt OP. It's just a bit of fun.

This post seems to imply that it was the least you deserved. You know not everyone is loaded right?

Yes, I'm very lovely.

Because I'm very lovely I'm not an ungrateful spoilt little princess so I can appreciate my husband doing something nice for me, even when it might not be something I'd necessarily choose myself.

And I'm very much of the make the most of it mindset. As someone else has pointed out, if you can manage a day in the lake district where it's likely to rain then surely you can manage finding something to do somewhere else!

ACynicalDad · 25/02/2026 12:19

Poor bloke, dammed if he does, dammd if he doesn't. YABVVU and ungrateful.

MyMilchick · 25/02/2026 11:59

That's the way to look at it! A quick change of attitude and OP might actually enjoy the spontaneous weekend

Exactly! And I would relish the chance for a nice meal and some cocktails in the evening, then a relax in the sunshine for a few hours and a nice walk. Feeling the sun on my face, especially after the cold, wet shite we are being subjected to here in the UK at the moment. Even on the flight I would relax with a book and my favourite snacks. What a lovely weekend. 😊

See, I'd find someone who could only stay in super luxurious hotels really boring.

Some of the most memorable times in my life have been when for one reason or another we've ended up staying somewhere dicey! Where's your sense of adventure 😂

We're all different. I'm sure there are things I can do easily that would make most of the people on this thread tired. No need to be rude.

What's rude about asking a question ❓

Sikar style to me then although I do have lounge access

Derpytiger · 25/02/2026 12:29

Not once has my partner of nearly 20 years ever booked us a trip for a surprise. This year we can't afford to go anywhere. No weekend away, even locally, no "main holiday" (do you have any idea how lucky you are to even use that phrase when others can't afford even one holiday).

I would be delighted to escape the rain and cold for even one day, even more delighted if I didn't have to organise it.

The addition of 'lol' onto the end does, at least to me, signify that the question is not being asked in good faith. Because someone being different to you is not, in and of itself, funny. Just a normal part of life.

Well aren’t you efficient. Don’t forget to collect your gold star and a Biscuit whilst you grab your pastry 😊

Some people live far away from airports. Especially if they need to travel on a main motorway where there could be delays due to traffic, roadworks, accidents. A lot of people plan for contingency time in order to get to an airport with sufficient time.

The flight from Newcastle to Gran Canaria is roughly 4 hours and 45 minutes. Thats not including the time you’re sat waiting to take off and the time sat when you land waiting to get off. The OP will most likely be on the plane for over 5 hours. if you like to read that’s great for you. But not everyone finds reading on a plane relaxing.

Well done for not having luggage. You do realise a cabin bag is still classed as luggage? Do you wear the same clothes on your back for days on end whilst you travel? You must stink!!

Also, there’s no trains from Gran Canaria airport. The OP will still have to get to the resort via a taxi or bus.

I think you’re the strange one here …

Why do you have to stink? I spent a month in Thailand with 6.5kg of luggage. I didn't stink.

Yes, you had luggage.

The poster I was replying to said she doesn’t take luggage.

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 12:35

And obviously if you are somewhere for a month, you can do laundry.

That fits into an under seat bag if you pack properly which is free even on bloody Ryanair

Well, that’s my point!😂

The poster I quoted said she doesn’t take luggage.

My point is a cabin bag is classed as luggage.

So if that poster travels for a trip with no luggage, the surely she has no belongings or clothing with her. Which is why I think she must stink.

Why would anyone stink? How much stuff do people need for 2 nights? Clean underwear, clean tshirt, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant and whatever bits of skincare you want would be plenty, no?

Most places people would travel to for a short trip will have shops.

Yes, I'm really very efficient. I fly at least a couple of times a week so I'm pretty good at organising myself to make the most of my time.
