To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

inkyspells · 24/02/2026 18:10

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

Hiya 😆

Nice! Well, I wouldn’t dream of trying to shove clothes and toiletries into a small under-the-seat bag for a three day trip. I don’t know how it would all fit.

Rolling them and packing cubes

You'd have a separate credit card that's paid out of the joint account for presents etc. A trusting couple that are both sensible with money would not question what each one is spending on the joint. I'm not saying it's for everyone but it is fairly common.

Thank you. That’s what we do. We’ve been married 30 years, had a joint account since I went on maternity leave.

2026IsMyYear · 25/02/2026 13:37

I think you're being a bit miserable @inkyspells!

In your shoes i would book an airport hotel on the friday night & head there after work for a nice meal & some relaxed drinks & decent breakfast there before you leave.

V leisurely saunter through the airport with v little luggage, nice glass of bubbles & a browse in duty free

I'd have done all the research in advance for nicest places for dinner & drinks once we arrive.

Fun day Sunday - whatever you're into - beach / pool / walk / water sports / sleep etc etc

Again i'd have a plan for Sunday night witj a booking

I do a lot of city breaks & love planning them. Admittedly Gran Canaria is not my thing but i'm sure a good time can be had ...with the right attitude!

Congratulations. I’m assuming you didn’t fly on a small budget airline? Because those planes hardly have any room for your feet never mind your feet and a bag to put a couple of outfits and toiletries in.

Not sure what your issue is tbh 🤣🤣

I generally start my trips on Ryanair so yes. It's much cheaper to take long haul flights outside the UK. I'm 5ft 6 and have plenty of room

MyMilchick · 25/02/2026 14:22

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 25/02/2026 12:19

Exactly! And I would relish the chance for a nice meal and some cocktails in the evening, then a relax in the sunshine for a few hours and a nice walk. Feeling the sun on my face, especially after the cold, wet shite we are being subjected to here in the UK at the moment. Even on the flight I would relax with a book and my favourite snacks. What a lovely weekend. 😊

a book, my favourite snacks and glass of red :p

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 14:25

Airport hotel on the Friday night plus 2x breakfast is another, what, £35 a head each, at least (assuming premier inn and not “nice meal and drinks” hotel)

Which is fine, but all the spends like that (along with maybe adding a joint cabin bag, airport parking etc) make the bargain flights a bit less bargainous.

Thank you . Yes, that’s how it works.

I don’t know anyone who can get away with packing 3 days clean clothes and toiletries into a carrier bag that can fit under the seat of a budget airline plane
Let me introduce myself!
I have it down to fine art by using a 35l rucksack that fits under the seat!
3 days is no time!

SpainToday · 25/02/2026 14:54

Me neither. Its not the end of the world (or a sign of failure) to take a suitcase!

Shinyhappyapple · 25/02/2026 14:56

ImFinePMSL · 25/02/2026 12:46

Ah so if you want to pack clean clothes and toiletries then you will be taking luggage, no? You know a cabin/overhead bag.

I don’t know anyone who can get away with packing 3 days clean clothes and toiletries into a carrier bag that can fit under the seat of a budget airline plane.

You initially said that you didn’t take luggage when you travel (Assuming traveling for a 2 night trip like the OP). So that’s why I assumed you must stink if you travel with no clean clothes.

Congratulations on your air miles!

I would assume that for £40 flights that it’s just an underseat bag. But for two nights when it’s going to be warm, that’s probably OK. And I’m not even a light packer.

It is expensive though 🤣

I paid £14.99 in September to check in a small suitcase?

But it’s not just a night out in a foreign place. It’s 6-7h of travelling time each way for a “night out”

I guess it's different strokes for different folks! We often do silly things that others would think an enormous waste of time. One time we drove to Portsmouth from Oxford just to get a Chinese meal to bring home because we'd had one there a while back and it was nice! A 4-hour round trip that resulted in our brand new car's windscreen getting cracked as well! An expensive takeaway that was! What's life without whimsey though?!

Me too! Especially somewhere warm like the Canaries clothes will be smaller/lighter

I personally wouldn’t go on a short break if 2 -3 days
I wouldn’t even get out of bed for a short break like that I would be absolutely knackered by the time I get back

for me personally a week abroad is the min
depending on how far you are from the airport and the transfer time on the other side

From the uk it’s 2-3 hours at the airport then 4hr flight then at least 1hr transfer inc getting luggage
For basically 1 full day

I’ve not long got back from holiday and the first 4 days it was really cold and windy in the canaries
we went for two weeks so still got 10 days of perfect weather

grimupnorthnot · 25/02/2026 16:06

Happy to go with him - but then we love an extreme day trip - done 36 hours in Iceland and a day trip to Albania

grimupnorthnot · 25/02/2026 16:08

And under-seat bag no problem for 2-3 nights - even been to Seville for a week with an under-seat bag each - just can't take lots of shoes (and we did have a washer in the apartment)

Clefable · 25/02/2026 16:08

I’m on your team, OP. We’ve been to GC a few times and no way would I go for two nights. It’s a 4-hour flight plus all the waiting around in airports at both ends, so you’re looking at about 12 hours+ of travel and airport faffing plus whatever the transfer is on other side (won’t be too long thankfully as GC isn’t very big). It’s a lot of hassle for two nights. Weird choice by him for sure.

You wouldn't have enjory our day trip to Finland then - only need to be at the airpoty 45-60 minutes before with hand luggage

going with hand luggage you don't need to hang around at airports the 2+ hours is only needed if checked in luggage

Clefable · 25/02/2026 16:11

Either way, not worth it for two days for me I’m afraid! Airports are a hellhole anyway.

I’m deffo not spoilt at all
its the fact it’s only going to be 1 day in the sun
We will get there and he will say he is too tired to do anything the first night.
So the second day will come and go and if it’s a rubbish day …we have travelled all that way for mothing
I Honestly would of preferred a couple of nights in the lakes or something
obviously I’m going and I’ve said Thankyou

So the second day will come and go and if it’s a rubbish day …we have travelled all that way for mothing

So basically, "If it's rubbish, it'll be rubbish"... well yeah, can't argue with that I suppose 😂

What about "So the second day will come and we could have such an amazing time that it will all feel worth it."

Also most of these examples of short trips people are giving are like 2-hour flights to Europe? It’s a 4 or 5-hour flight. GC is off the coast of Africa. It’s not two nights in Paris.

This thread is really weird! Would you pop to Turkey for two nights?

I think that’s the key thing. Two nights in Alicante - fab. Canaries not so much,
especially when flying from Newcastle.

girliepop · 25/02/2026 16:51

I think your partner was sold on the price of the flight and didn’t factor in the logistics of the trip
i wonder how much of a difference cost would be to go from Friday 5pm to Monday 5pm
