To be annoyed at partner booking a trip…

inkyspells · 24/02/2026 18:10

I have wanted to go away for ages but due partners work we have to wait till June for our main holiday.
Today he texts me saying he has booked 2 nights in Gran Canaria next weekend.
We don’t get there till 5pm Saturday and come home 5pm monday.
What is the point
The flights were only £40 return but still ridiculous
Aibu to be annoyed ?

I'm with you OP
It's a ridiculous plan. Hours in airports and on a plane for what will amount to one day to enjoy.

And if it's something that you're going to hate, and you would have preferred to go to the lakes, then it's not unreasonable to be disappointed that he doesn't seem to know you that well.

TunnocksOrDeath · 25/02/2026 17:50

Is he expecting you to take a day of annual leave so you can travel back on the Monday, but didn't check with you first? That would annoy me. DH and I always check before booking anything that the other person actually wants to go, and that they are happy with the dates.

You wouldn't have enjory our day trip to Finland then - only need to be at the airpoty 45-60 minutes before with hand luggage

No I wouldn’t
I wouldn’t see the point

Lol prefer to sit in front of the tv then?

Id rather go away for a couple of nights or even an extreme day trip than be bored at home

Why would you be bored at home?

Also, there are plenty of ways to 'not be at home' that aren't 'travel for 6-7 hours each way for a 1.5 day trip'. Going to the Lakes, as mentioned by the OP. Theatre, cinema, hiking, swimming...

CandidRaven · 25/02/2026 18:34

So he tries to do something nice and gets moaned at for it, poor guy

She hasn’t moaned at him. Maybe read her posts instead of making shit up?

What is it with this thread full of people thinking everyone is, or should be, the same as them? Not understanding that others prefer to spend their time doing different things to them? I would hate a trip to the Canaries, of any length. I find airports overstimulating and stressful. I know people who like nothing better than a day in front of the TV. I would love a couple of days at home, with my books, music, woodwork etc, and would not be bored for a second (no TV for me though). If you prefer doing something, crack on. Leave others to decide for themselves what they prefer.

Going to the lakes would most likely take me as long as GC and id say more in petrol. Been there twice and pissed down both times

And it does get boring with no one to talk to all the tine

Needing trips to escape your own home? You sound exhausting. Why bother having a home Lol

To sleep in of course. Why would I want to spend a weekend off indoors rather than doing something? I work most weekends so dont want to be sat indoors doing nothing on my time off

A four hour flight, is some drinks and conversation with the man you (presumably) love, and/or time with a good book or film. Or a nap. It doesn't have to be miserable.

And travelling through airports is no hardship at all these says. I fly often and it's almost always very efficient.

I agree with you!
I would have a couple of glasses of wine, a laugh with my partner and then maybe a bit of a catch up on my book.
The Flight would be no hassle to me.

SheilaFentiman · 25/02/2026 20:45

You, maybe @Thechaseison71

But since the OP mentioned the Lakes and her airport for the GC trip is Newcastle, I expect it would be about 2.5h for her.

Squidwardthesnail · 25/02/2026 20:45

I've done a couple of "micro holidays" and It can be lovely. One was to a city in Spain. Landed 10am. Had a wonderful day. Drinks at night. Saw the city. Had a lovely lazy morning with breakfast at a cafe. Went to see a few more things and flew home in the evening. One night. About 30 hours. And it was great. Second time to one of the canaries. 2 nights. Again landed about 10am. Flew home 7am the morning after the second night. So just shy of 48 hours. Did a planned tour, swam in the sea, enjoyed the beach, had good food. It can actually be really lovely. I'd go and make the most of it!

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 25/02/2026 23:10

He has organised this rip to shut you up.
It's cheap and last minute..To siut him.And not in the month you wanted.

If you don't go l bet he will guilt trip you.
If l were you I wouldn't go.. Tough.

apeaceful2026 · 24/02/2026 18:21

That sounds absolutely rubbish.

That's eight hours of flying, plus getting to and from the airport twice, and waiting at the airport......for one day in the sun.

I am in my 60s id do it. A bit of an adventure. Yes short but a bit of sun, good company..... well done to him for trying to do something nice

Lamaitresse · 26/02/2026 18:09

YABU - life is for the living!
What’s wrong with being a bit spontaneous now and then? What would you have been doing otherwise next weekend?
You can presumably still have your main holiday in June can you? So this is just a little trip to the sunshine to tide you over. Wish my dh would book a trip like that!
Lighten up a bit, and have a brilliant time ☀️

You don’t know anything about this lady. She may work really hard all week and not want to spend her entire weekend travelling.

ThisRedLion · 26/02/2026 19:24

I'd love that what a lovely thought

I also see that people have weird views of travel. I'm never in an airport long enough to be hanging around. I arrive with enough time to park, get through security (fast pass) and stroll to my gate with enough time to grab a coffee and pastry on the way.

On the plane I read. I enjoy reading, and having however many hours to sit and do it is nice. I could sit and read for 4 hours no problem!

I don't have luggage. And there's no "getting to the resort" as I just hop straight on a bus or train and go somewhere.

This ^^

We are flying from Newcastle

There aren’t many cheap flights from Newcastle so kudos to your OH for finding these.

Daftypants · 26/02/2026 19:32

It sounds lovely but it is a long way for 2 nights and you only get one full day there , one evening and a morning.
I guess it depends how near you are to the airport at either end ?
I have only done such a short stay in European cities that are much shorter flights

Spirallingdownwards · 26/02/2026 19:32

Why wouldn't someone kill something that doesn't give them joy? He sounds thoughtless, not nice.

Both OP and you sound like what my nan would term a right pair of misery guts.

Embrace the adventure, do something different, live life.
