To be upset that young women feel they have to mutilate themselves like this

Face Estetica GIF by Dott. Cristina Sartorio

For context ‘young’ in my book is anyone under 35. I am in my 50’s. Very much old crone territory and thankfully no amount of procedures could improve my bog standard appearance. Thankfully as I am over 50 I really couldn’t give a toss.

So - AIBU to think that any level of plastic surgery is unnecessary except for medical reasons and to be particularly upset that young women think they need it?

Young people are beautiful. Full stop. They are young, have fresh skin, bouncy hair and ooze youth. Why does society tell them that making their bottom extra round or their lips extra puffy will improve their lives immeasurably?

Because it is society. I don’t buy the ‘doing it for themselves’ for one minute. If it was just for them they wouldn’t be posting images of the new improved them over the internet usually with the support of some down lighting and a smoothing filter or two.

Is this yet another issue we can lay at the feet of the patriarchy or is the concept of beauty so skewed anyway that I should stop getting so exercised about it and go back to my knitting?(societal stereotype of 50 something woman for dramatic effect. I prefer decoupage)

Eek. In my 50’s like you and I’m pretty sure that the Botox and acid injections in my face have definitely improved my ‘big standard’ appearance 😉

I didn’t need them when young but they have definitely kept me looking better over the last 6 years, started late 40’s with the Botox.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/02/2026 17:55

‘Bog’

Mariocatgran · 21/02/2026 17:57

Better than what?

Agree OP and all the heavy make up - on beauty of fresh skin - it’s crucifying to see

SoSadSoSadSoSad · 21/02/2026 17:59

You’re not in old crone territory ffs

TheMorgenmuffel · 21/02/2026 18:00

Self mutilation as 'beauty' is as old as time, sadly.
Foot binding. Neck rings, big holes in ears, face tattoos, lip plates... botox and plastic surgery is no different.

Echobelly · 21/02/2026 18:01

I do find it sad when women under 30, let alone under 20, worry about 'fine lines' (it sounds like teens are starting to stress about this too). No one notices 'fine lines' unless they're staring at you from an inch away, which you'd hope people aren't doing! Men certainly don't notice them.

YANBU OP.

Including ridiculous lip fillers, Russian lashes and sharpie eye brows in that as well.

YANBU in that it's a shame anyone feels the need to do this to themselves.

YABU to be so ageist.

Perhaps phrases like 'old crone' etc don't help people to want to age gracefully.

But you see my post wasn’t about old mature women such as you. It was about the younguns. I figure you are old enough and far enough away from having peachy youfy skin to decide what you want and whether it is an improvement on ageing gracefully.

20 years ago everyone was getting their boobs done, not a new thing.

No they werent

Slightyamusedandsilly · 21/02/2026 18:10

I've NEVER understood this. Making the outside look younger while the inside ages at the usual rate.

Why?

Squirrelchops1 · 21/02/2026 18:10

I'm 49. I have botox because I dont like being wrinkly. I really dont overthink it more than that.
I have blonde put in my hair because I prefer it to all over mouse. I dont overthink it.
I get my brows waxed because I prefer a neat look. I dont overthink it.

I lift weights at the gym x 4/5 a week. Now that I do think about. Not for unattainable reasons but to support fitness, muscle and bone density as in perimenopause. I want to be mobile as I get older and be fit and healthy.

Flamingojune · 21/02/2026 18:10

In my 50s (and am not an old crone in any way). Live in London, 30 years in a professional industry, very social, known a lot of women. I don’t know of a single one who had a boob job. Obviously there could be some secrets but that’s very very far from everyone having a boob job.

But squirrel you are not relevant. You are 49. Not young. Unless you compare yourself to an elephant or something.

I am talking about Youngwomen.
