Husband licks his dinner plate after eating

Not every meal and only when we have our family dinner but sometimes when he has finished eating he will pick his plate up and lick it clean!! I find this totally gross and have told him but this time i told him he was worse than a dog. My daughter thinks my comments were callous!! AIBU and just let him do this if it makes him happy? Only does it at home!

My boyfriend licks his plate too. Fortunately, he only does it at home when its just the two of us. He has impeccable table manners when we have guests or eat out. He's agreed not to do it in front of children, when we have them.

IveStillNotGotThisFiguredOut · 18/02/2026 07:32

It’s so inconsequential

GanninHyem · 18/02/2026 07:36

Some of y'all plates need a good licking and it shows.

Talkingtomyhouseplants · 18/02/2026 07:51

Berlinlover · 17/02/2026 21:38

It’s not though.

Plenty of people also think it’s perfectly fine! Why on earth would it be a problem in the comfort of your own home? People do all sorts of “gross” things when they are at home. I don’t squeeze spots in public either.

Love how people keep saying in the comfort of your own home. 😂 when it should be why should it matter if you sit at the dinner table licking your plate in front of your family/partner.

because it’s disgusting to watch, it’s poor manners, looks like you’re so greedy you can’t control yourself, and overall gross to do.

I mean if you’re sitting alone then crack on if that’s your thing, I’m sure there are lots of disgusting things some people do in private, but it is no more acceptable to sit and lick your plate in front of your partner, as it is to pick your nose and eat it, or scratch your arsehole. Sure all done in the comfort of your own home. Doesn’t make it any less gross for the onlooker.

Better than letting the dog lick it as some do on here!

How is this better? I agree pets shouldn't be picking plates but I'd be significantly more disgusted to look over and see DW licking her plate clean than to have to shoo away a pet who thinks they've seen and opportunity.

This, people who let there animals lick the plates is really gross and the reason i won't eat at peoples houses who have pets 🤢

HugoThatway · 18/02/2026 12:03

I think it’s really sad that people feel like they can’t just exist in front of their partner. Imagine feeling like you are being monitored all the time when it is just you and your family at home. It should be a safe space to exist as you would in private.

Just existing doesn’t mean you’ve no manners or respect for your partner and you can sit and do all sorts of disgusting things and make them watch.

You aren’t “making them watch”, you’re just doing a normal thing everyone does in front of someone you have agreed to share a life with and should feel wholly comfortable around. Some people are so uptight. You should be able to fart/burp/adjust your underwear/scratch with your partner in the vicinity and without having to leave the room or be scolded. You aren’t forcing them down and putting on a display, they just happen to be there and I think it’s really sad you don’t feel comfortable enough around your partner to be human

What on earth, licking your plate is not a normal thing everyone does. And if you’re not making them watch then you’re forcing them to leave the room when you do it,

if you want to sit and scratch your arse hole, adjust your undies and lick your plate in front of your partner, fair enough, but I’ve too much respect for myself and them.

It's a bit odd to not let your partner adjust their undies in front of you. I mean, scratching your arse is unhygienic, so pretty gross. And plate licking I can imagine might be pretty slobbery to watch.

But it's weird to me that people will literally put their mouths on areas that urine comes from/touches on their partner (oral sex) and yet think that adjusting your undies if they're riding up/pinching is disrespectful.

I live alone but don't lick plates, largely because I have a big nose and don't want to get gravy all over it. 😆

I'll use bread to mop up juices, although if they're particularly runny, I may slurp them off the edge of the plate while raising it.

😆
My husband has licked his plate in front of me as a joke, to show his appreciation of my food....in response, I lick mine, so it's a joint lick.

It's hardly good etiquette, and obviously, we use cutlery when out, but is it worth getting upset about, is it heck.

TakeALookAtTheseSwatches · 17/02/2026 19:40

I do this sometimes. In the comfort of your own home I don't see why it matters? I wouldn't do it in a restaurant.

I have done this as well. When noone is around! You can't do this infront of others- it's vile. No difference to pick your nose.

Agee on adjusting undies to be fair.

So if nothing else, your husband's bad habit would give your pelvic floor workout a boost.😎

Keep the feral plate lickers happily under the same roof together, problem solved. Let the non lickers also live happily together. It would be have been an instant turn off for me, and I would never have married someone who made me feel uncomfortable in my 'safe space' (also a turn off) by behaving like this.

If you lick plates at home in front of your kids, how do you expect them to know not to do it at school etc?

As for all the other chat about oral sex. I don't do that at the kitchen table with the kids watching either. Its a false equivalence.

Gross. Do you still have sex? Please think about another 40 years of this. I just finished with a man, he fed himself off the plate without hands, literally pushed the food jnto his face. I could not see him again.

Im struggling to imagine this. So he had a plate full of food on the table, he bent down and stuck his face in it? For the whole meal? Didnt he get it all over his face??!

Livpool · 18/02/2026 13:22

DH occasionally does this. I give him the look 😂

I completely agree with you. A large proportion of people on Mumsnet are incredibly uptight - that’s never more apparent than on the regular threads about how disgusting it is to fart in front of someone, and they you should leave the room and go to the toilet to let one out.

My husband and daughter very rarely lick their plates but when they do, I take it as a great compliment they I’ve cooked something delicious enough to make them want to lick every last bit.
