Husband licks his dinner plate after eating

Not every meal and only when we have our family dinner but sometimes when he has finished eating he will pick his plate up and lick it clean!! I find this totally gross and have told him but this time i told him he was worse than a dog. My daughter thinks my comments were callous!! AIBU and just let him do this if it makes him happy? Only does it at home!

I can’t believe people are admitting to this, it’s absolutely vile.

Surely licking yoghurt lids is normal though?

Indeed, not licking yoghurt lids is downright peculiar behaviour.

I sometimes lick my plate at home too, it makes the washing up easier.

How is it vile?

XenoBitch · 17/02/2026 22:22

I think some people never had the joy of licking the cake mix bowl as a kid, and it shows.

Lavender14 · 17/02/2026 22:22

I once went for dinner and they gave their dogs the dinner plates to 'clean' before they went in the dish washer... I think that was worse..

ImPamDoove · 17/02/2026 22:23

I can’t think of much worse. It’s the most classless and embarrassing thing. Only really rough people would do this.

YourWinter · 17/02/2026 22:24

FFS as long as it’s only at home, just look away.

Me too! What’s the big deal? The plate is clean as we are already eating food off it. We lick food off our forks and spoons- we lick our partner’s body…. so why is it suddenly disgusting to lick your plate? It’s a compliment that the sauce is lovey! Ok it’s not well mannered/for polite society- but there’s nothing objectively disgusting about it. It’s just “not done”…. Let loose a bit! All of you up tight folk should try it- you might like it! 😂

Totally agree. I’m quite shocked by the outrage! MN is always an eye opener and people are fascinating to me. Yes poor manners but why disgusting and revolting? Can anyone explain? It’s not something I’d do often but if I wanted to in my own home, I’d be more outraged by a partner who called me disgusting for something that has nothing to do with hygiene.

My ex DP went to a restaurant in London where diners eat in total darkness. It is meant to heighten other senses such as taste (and he said it was very loud in there too).
Apparently, people do lick their plates there because no one can see them.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/02/2026 22:36

MIL does it privarely at home as does one of DH's sisters. It's ill mannered and vulgar. However the best bit is that MIL whonwas a deputy headmistress thinks she's frighfullly intellectual and slags off her hairdresswr and other ordinary people fkr taking package holiday. Raa haa, they're so thick and stupid.

She counts food as well.

Notellinganyone · 17/02/2026 22:37

I do this all the time. Not sure why everyone is getting so pearl clutchy about this.

Yep, apparently we are vile, ill-mannered, embarassing, vulgar, and rough.
It is hilarious how upset some people are at things people do in the privacy of their own home that does not affect them at all.
My mind is boggled!

Caitl995 · 17/02/2026 22:43

Just reminded me that my late Dad did this, it really is gross isn’t it? 🤮 I think you telling him it’s gross should be enough for him to stop, it’s not really difficult to ‘not do’ is it? It’s a bit like licking your knife, if my OH said he didn’t like it, I just wouldn’t do it, I’m no pushover but if it was just one thing that your OH didn’t like surely you just stop?

Diosmonet · 17/02/2026 22:48

I am not exaggerating when I use the word shocked to describe my reaction to the posters who are fine with this, and that do it themselves.

I have never ever seen such a thing and it would never occur to me to lick a plate clean.

It is a level of boorishness I cannot comprehend. I would leave the man that did this.

ProportionalCosts · 17/02/2026 22:50

My partner licks his knife and fork whilst eating. Once he’s finished he licks his fingers and repeatedly runs them along the plate to get the last of any sauce. He then uses a finger to dab the plate multiple times to get every last crumb. This is at home and in public and it turns my stomach.

BubbleFree · 17/02/2026 22:52

It’s not about what people do in the privacy of their own home, the OP doesn’t like what her DH is doing. What people do in their home is fine if it doesn’t revolt someone else living there. I wouldn’t let my dogs near anything we eat off, for me that’s disgusting, but if others do it that’s up to them, it wouldn’t happen in my house. If my DH had licked a plate he’d be an ex DH but we have the same standards around table manners and neither of us would do it because we both find it unacceptable. Likewise, we wouldn’t eat with our mouths open, lick knives, have elbows on the table etc.

This thread is wild.
Licks a plate = vile, vulgar, rough, LTB.
Licks your genitals = 👌

BeanQuisine · 17/02/2026 23:22

Here's an interesting question. Most people reading this thread will be picturing the husband licking his plate.

What does he look like, in your imagination? I'm picturing a fat, bald, middle-aged bloke with a cheerful, somewhat childish face.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/02/2026 23:40

Is it after every meal or do some please his palate more

Well yes seem madness

mn is full of sexual positions and anal /oral sex

but mention licking own plate clean an it’s the most disgusting thing ever 🙀🙀🙄🙄

ginnitonic · 17/02/2026 23:47

Surely licking your plate clean is the ultimate compliment to the cook?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/02/2026 23:48

He should have a few slices of bread with a wet dinner, mop it up without his face in the plate.

Isn’t it fascinating! I love these threads that show these whole ways other people think when we all assume we are fairly average. I’m the opposite to you in that I’m shocked by the level of disgust, but I’ve been on MN long enough to have discovered that many people find disgust in far more places in life than I do!

Id be interested in the regionality of this - I am Scottish and dare I say - <ducks and takes cover> - is strong devotion to manners and etiquette a southern English phenomenon? I sincerely apologise to all if this is offensive stereotyping, but I really am just interested in the anthropology of all this. I’ve literally never heard anyone use the word ‘boorish’ in a RL context before for example, maybe in literature. Of course I was raised not to lick any item of tableware in public but for me your home is a different story.

You have described my DP 😊

I actually laughed aloud at the sheer what the fuck of this. So bizarre.

I agree with the pp who suggested giving him bread to mop up with and try to be glad he loves your cooking (if you cooked) that much!

Overall its harmless if a bit weird and definitely not the social norm!

We go to a really good chain in Netherlands called Loetje when we’ve been there and they do big meatball type things and steaks in really great gravy/sauce and it all comes with lovely bread to ‘mop up’
