Husband licks his dinner plate after eating

Not every meal and only when we have our family dinner but sometimes when he has finished eating he will pick his plate up and lick it clean!! I find this totally gross and have told him but this time i told him he was worse than a dog. My daughter thinks my comments were callous!! AIBU and just let him do this if it makes him happy? Only does it at home!

So long as he only does it at home, I don’t see the problem.

This thread is absolutely batshit. People would split their family up and get divorced because their husband licked sauce off a plate he's just eaten from? Absolute insanity.

It would be a hard line for me

Then I don;t think your relationship with your DH is a sound as you might think, if you would LTB the over licking a plate

Well I don't have a DH and wouldn't consider marrying anyone who licked plates. It's utterly revolting behaviour.

Pallisers · 18/02/2026 01:35

I have been with my mum in a cafe, she licked the plate. I gave zero fucks. LTM?

But if you did mind and asked your mum not to do it - what would she say?

Flomingho · 18/02/2026 01:39

Disgusting and rude.🤮

I'm always curious as to what's so disgusting about it, genuinely.

The plate is clean.
The food will be going into his mouth anyway.
His tongue is presumably clean enough to snog him/let him perform oral sex.

So what's 'disgusting'? All the elements involved are clean. It's unmannerly, yes, but manners are just a regional social construct, so while it might seem childish it's not dirty. It's not like he's doing something unhygienic, like licking shit off the pavement. He's licking clean food off a clean plate with a clean tongue.

CrackInTheGlass · 18/02/2026 01:55

I had an ex boyfriend who did this. I caught him right before one time and said “Oh, something smells funny!” He sniffed his plate and as he did I pushed his head down just a tiny bit and he came up with a smear of gravy on his nose. I wasn’t forceful or nasty but he never licked his plate again, I think it was embarrassed out of him. He did laugh and came after me with his gravy nose. So it wasn’t a big deal for either of us as it turned out.

Your comments certainly are. The action in question is nothing however.

MsSmartShoes · 18/02/2026 05:24

I can’t even cope with someone who holds their knife like a pen so this would be grounds for divorce. The only thing that could be a compromise is if he would use bread to mop up instead (if he absolutely has to).

If it's only at home it wouldn't bother me.

I've been known to lick yogurt lids 🤣

Licking a yoghurt lid is nowhere near the same as licking a dinner plate. Yoghurt lids are meant to be licked😁

saltandvinegarpringles · 18/02/2026 05:39

I love a good manners and etiquette thread - people get so riled up and competitive about who can be the most disgusted 🤣

In all seriousness, what's the difference, and why? I'm curious.

(Personally, no one in my household licks their plates because we just...well, don't? It seems a little childish to me, I suppose. But I wouldn't be driven mad by it either if it happened on occasion.)

And out come all the MN pearl clutchers!!!

Who cares, as long as he only does it in the privacy of his own home. Honestly, MN is good for a hearty laugh at times. 😂Yes, I've been known to do this, as well as letting dogs and cats do it. I seem to be far healthier than the average hygiene obsessed MN.

No one 'rinses' a plate as well as a dog/cat!

It's environmentally friendly too, as you save rinsing water! And all it takes is a hot, soapy wash to make the plate perfectly clean again.

ThinkingAbout2026 · 18/02/2026 05:54

My DP slurped out of the bowl and occasionally licked his plate when we first met, after a few moans from me he stopped doing both. I think it was a bad habit he picked up whilst living alone in his bachelor lifestyle for years because he was very clean and tidy otherwise. It was gross but it would never have been a deal breaker.

😂😂

It's not cute - it's actually feckin' gross

What's actually gross about it, though? It's clean food that would go in his mouth anyway, a clean plate that will be washed, and a clean tongue that OP would likely happy engage with in regards to snogging or oral sex... So what's 'gross'?

I'm genuinely curious what causes the disgust response in people in regards to this, and I've got no answers!

Natsku · 18/02/2026 06:28

I still lick my plate sometimes if the sauce is particularly good, or if I just ate a bowl of ice cream. One of those childhood habits I never outgrew because frankly its nice to get those last drops of deliciousness, much better than letting them go to waste!

Frenchfrychic · 18/02/2026 06:35

I also find it stomach churning, there is just something gross about the lack of manners associated with it, the sight of it, tongue out licking a plate, it isn’t unhygienic or anything, it’s just revolting, plate up, in your face, tongue going round it.

It’s not it’s unhygienic, it is simply disgusting to see, the sheer lack of manners associated with it, the perceived greed that someone can’t even leave a little sauce on their plate, the plate up, and someone slobbering their tongue round it. It is utterly gross, and really not related or in any way comparable to any intimacy. Quite frankly I don’t think I could be intimate with someone I watched sitting there licking their plate.

Mine drinks the last milk out of his cereal bowl! I have told him if he’d done it when we first met there woukd have been no 2nd date!

Now come on I bet a few do that it’s not the same

I mean, some women might appreciate their man going to town on them the way they do their plate 😂

Crassness aside, that's fair enough! No one I know does lick their plate, so all I can imagine is sitting opposite someone and staring at their face hidden by the plate. I wouldn't think you'd be able to see anything? But I suppose if you were seated next to them it might be off-putting. I can understand that 😅

Although I see it as an abhorrence of waste, rather than an excess of greed. My husband doesn't lick his plate, but he always tries to scrape up every last bit of sauce because he was raised to not waste his food.
