‘Official estimates suggest the cost of scrapping the cap will total £13.6 billion over the next five years.

The Tories said families currently affected by the cap are in line to receive windfalls worth an average £25,000 each over that period.

But the biggest families will gain far more. Thousands of families with five children will receive around £10,900 a year while those with six children will get an extra £16,600 a year.
Almost half of the families involved have no one in work.‘

Labour benefits plan 'will hand £25,000' to biggest jobless families

Ministers will bring forward legislation on Tuesday to lift the limit on benefit payments which was imposed in 2017.

So, changes I would make.
Make work pay. Low paid work is never going to give a lot of spare 'fun' money. The state needs to step in but not with benefits top ups. Firstly build really good quality social housing and give priority to working people, not the disabled, not the unemployed, not the elderly who are usually top priority for this stuff. Working people are carrying the rest of us, they need to be looked after first imo. It's the fit your own oxygen mask first.
Have better public services available to help keep people in work as well. Childcare etc, again priority to working people. Currently people working in low paid work (and are told to be grateful about it) are barely better off (or not) than people not working plus they have a hard, boring job to be doing for 40 hours a week. I'd choose a bit less money and abundant free time over a miserable job, people choosing this life are making a rashional choice.
I would give zero extra money for depression/anxiety conditions. This isn't about saving money or punishment. I would put every penny into therapy and support for them instead. Money is a huge motivator, it even improves breastfeeding rate, at the moment people have a perverse incentive to stay sick. Just giving people money to fester at home is the very worst thing we could do for them imo. As I said, with regard mental health, this isn't about the money, it's about doing our best for people.
So basically, make people benefit from being in work, any work. Put money directly into mental health services and support and not to individuals.

Disabled people tend to be priority for social housing because it is often the only way they can live in an accessible property.

It's the reason why i have social housing as my son is disabled and the previous property was deemed unsuitable for his needs by an OT assessment.

It's impressive that she's managed a trip to New York considering right now, there's a 2 child cap in place so she isn't getting UC for all 4 children.

Oh dear still in denial! 😂😂!

She’s been gaming the system for decades her eldest 2 are just in to there 20s so she was getting child benefit for 3 children up until it was changed about 8 years ago. She lives the life of riley. She spaces them out to max out what she can get. Just had her fourth.

It’s everywhere so many chancers gaming the system!

If she worked and had to pay her rent and bills she wouldn’t be having 4 kids but it’s all paid for…courtesy of the mugs working.

She will be saying at least one of them are disabled or will claim to have a disability herself, maybe a touch of depression/anxiety/fybro and then the cap doesn't apply.

Child benefit isn't what changed, the child element of UC is what changed.

She can say what she wants but you need proof ,and yeah not just a patient says letter from the GP.

I have a disabled child. I must have missed the memo where it's as simple as just saying that your child is disabled.

That Is exactly what she is doing….as soon as she pops one out she is pushing for an ADHD diagnosis and all sorts …she gets a heck of a lot each month and no rent to pay etc.
It is wrong and sickening and this is all over …she is the tip of the iceberg.

But you have the extra heating? This is what PIP is for.

Because other costs are not applicable to you.

Also, you have CT reductions, lower electricity costs through the Warm Hose Discount, free dental care and eye care, reduced entry for many places.

You know nothing about disability or the extra costs of being chair and housebound ....pip goes towards lots of extra things but doesnt cover all. We get a carer twice a day for 15 mins each time supposed to get up, wash, dress, prepare food, give meds, set out drinks in that 15 mins.....what level of care do you think you get in that time? So have to pay extra......didcounts on f..c.ing outings how the f..k does she get there which carer takes her in a lay down..f...ing wheelchair ...please tell me what job she can do

You need proof for a diagnosis of ADHD .

I know and I understand the reasons around it.
I still think we need to start priorities working people instead of putting them at the bottom of the queue and telling them to be grateful for a zero hours job in a warehouse or care home. If that was my life, with no hope of my own place or moving forward I'd be depressed as well. We have to look after working people so they can keep working. I remember a disabled person on one of these threads arguing that she should have more spare/fun money than her carer because the carer could just get a better paying job. And I'm sure you've heard the screams of outrage if a carer dares be so frivolous as to buy a Costa.
Ultimately though, social housing shouldn't be in short supply, it should be landlord of first resort not last.

She's a horrible vile person living off the taxpayer. Yet this government are unable to tackle the welfare state.

It's fairly easy to check if a person is elderly.

Assessments exist.

If people hadn't been gaming the system for so fucking long, the mandatory hoops would be easier for the genuine.

Coaching people on passing assessments should be stamped out.

Again anecdotally, I am aware of someone that makes a very tidy living coaching people through pip assessments.
Why?
You either need it, or you don't.

You've clearly never seen a pip form or had an assessment?

We wouldn't need to be coached if the assessment process was fair

So report her?

I don't understand why people are so excited to rile everyone up on here over the benefits claimants they know who are definitely scrounging and admit to being on the fiddle while doing little evil villain mustache twirls - but people don't just report them?

Shinyandnew1 · 04/02/2026 09:35

What changes were there 8 years ago?

Are you getting confused between child benefit and the 2-child benefit cap?

She’s a pro she got PIP years ago she was anxious and she got it. She has lived off the back of the taxpayer for years and years. Kids on a conveyor belt and rolling in benefits …never worked or paid rent.

The government have enabled this. There should be a limit.

Wouldn't you then just be doing the same to disabled people? Some who would love to be able to work but simply aren't able to?

We'd be homeless if we weren't offered an accessible property for my son. The previous house wasn't an option which is why we were offered social housing.

whataguddle · 04/02/2026 09:46

She’s one of millions pulling these stunts!

The answer is restrict benefits and a radical shake up of all benefits and limits put in place.

tabbycat897 · 04/02/2026 09:50

The current level of benefits are simply unaffordable. This government knows it, but they also know they will be out of power in a few years time so they are going to continue down this path and leave a mess for the next government to untangle/clean up. Unless of course they mess it up so royally that Britain goes bust and we need some sort of bail out - in which case they will be forced to stop spending money we don't have a bit sooner.

Plenty of other countries in the world don't have a welfare state as generous as ours and people adapt because they have to.

It wouldn't need to be stringent and "unfair" if people didn't game it.

Life is unfair.

People taking the piss is why you have to jump through hoops.

I stand by what I said.
