‘Official estimates suggest the cost of scrapping the cap will total £13.6 billion over the next five years.

The Tories said families currently affected by the cap are in line to receive windfalls worth an average £25,000 each over that period.

But the biggest families will gain far more. Thousands of families with five children will receive around £10,900 a year while those with six children will get an extra £16,600 a year.
Almost half of the families involved have no one in work.‘

Labour benefits plan 'will hand £25,000' to biggest jobless families

Ministers will bring forward legislation on Tuesday to lift the limit on benefit payments which was imposed in 2017.

Sod the extra heating because your chair bound or having to have a key meter. Of course you dont have any luxury if your ill or disabled no tv.
Sod that your kid needs treatment several times a week and your paying to get there.

But you have the extra heating? This is what PIP is for.

Because other costs are not applicable to you.

Also, you have CT reductions, lower electricity costs through the Warm Hose Discount, free dental care and eye care, reduced entry for many places.

@24kPalaminoexactly! The irony being this ridiculous government that I stupidly voted for are pushing working families into poverty! Make those not working contribute to society! I have anxiety and OCD I still drag myself to work everyday, present in front of people - because I have to! The whole benefits Britain is a vicious circle! The fact so many kids dont even know how to brush their teeth or go to the toilet when they start school shows how many lazy parents there are!

Totally agree. My husband was a child raised in poverty. His mum had a massive inheritance and still managed to raise him in poverty, without a bed, or new uniform and just a jam sandwich for dinner. He had one set of clothes.

TheThinkingEconomist · 03/02/2026 20:20

Again, the money is not going to the children.

You seem unable to understand this. It goes to the parents.

When you invest in childcare, free school meals, education and the like, the benefit goes directly to the children.

What do you mean it’s not going to the children? Where do you think it is going?

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:38

@DontGoJasonWaterfallscan you explain to me how I am meant to survive, when I pay all bills, childcare and mortgage payment I am left with a teeny, tiny amount! But I’m not entitled to any benefits! I work evenings and weekends to bring in extra income! Maybe those on benefits could too!

topicalaffair · 03/02/2026 20:39

24kPalamino · 03/02/2026 20:31

In most cases it’ll probably be because they’ll be worse off working. Why work 40 hours and have to get up at 6am everyday, if you can stay in bed until 12pm and work 8 hours a week, but get topped up to the same amount.

Unbelievable isn’t it.

Bilster · 03/02/2026 20:22

This exactly. You’re relying on those parents spending that extra money on the kids. Rather than using that money ensuring the benefit definitely goes to the kids.

And why wouldn’t they be?
What do you think they’re spending it on?

If they’re spending it on food and bills or even <gasp> holidays then it is going to the children.

Or do you have a very narrow prejudiced view of parents spending money on fags and booze?

These children get what they deserve to get as they eat like the first and second child do, no other country discriminates their future taxpayers this way. Child benefit cap should have never been a thing, billions robbed from children and theres nothing to show for it.

It’s SO fucking outdated and ghoulish to say “Sorry poor people, no money to take your kids of poverty for you. You see you just can’t be trusted to spend it properly”

topicalaffair · 03/02/2026 20:41

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:24

I think it’s complete ignorance to think people don’t abuse the system and the government have made it easier for some to stay on benefits. People ask for examples - I have one! Single mothers who have a middle income versus single mothers on a low Income. I earn a middle income, I work full time, I have a mortgage on a small flat! I am entitled to zero! I scrape by every month and am getting into debt to pay for wraparound care! A single mother friend rents in the same block I own! She gets 85% of her childcare costs paid for 90% of her rent paid for and UC on top of that. She works 4 days a week in not a demanding role, she doesn’t want a promotion or more hours as she’ll lose her UC! She ends up 3k better off than me each year. Citizens advice even stated I’d be better off selling flat, frittering away the cash and getting a minimum wage job! Until Labour actually acknowledges how ridiculously flawed the benefits system is, people will take advantage! Labour sold a lie to me, saying they would be the party of the working people! Instead they do the opposite! I will never vote for them again! Yes some genuinely do need help but a lot just use and abuse the system!

I’m sorry about your story. I think it’s very common. And it isn’t right.

No. When we know people are irresponsible, we shouldn’t hand over responsibility and trust them blindly. Support should come with conditions and monitoring, until those people know how to behave responsibly. Or if they don’t want to be monitored, they can always choose to go and get a job and pay for stuff themselves.

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 03/02/2026 20:43

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 03/02/2026 20:22

Yes. Because the money goes to the parents not the kids. No one forced most of them to have more kids than they can afford and half decent parents mange or work more hours.

Well of course it goes to the parents. Why wouldn’t it? Babies can’t spend money out their bank accounts.

Aside from the fact that not everyone affected by the cap “had more kids” (many have since lost their jobs or become disabled) , aside from the fact that loads of part time jobs to fit around the kids are freely available, why should the kids suffer for their parent’s choice (and non choices)?

Nobody wants to answer this

Probably because you have a very prejudiced view and don’t see the children behind these ranty MN posts.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:43

@topicalaffairthe irony being the only help I’d actually want is free or heavily subsidised wraparound care and it would save me nearly £2k a term (this isn’t nursery it’s wraparound) to me allowing someone who is working minimal hours to get 85% of their childcare paid for whilst I work full time and get F all is insanity!!’ But Labour do not want to know! They are SO ignorant about real life!

Mapleleaf114 · 03/02/2026 20:43

Holidays

Its 17pw per child- childs food costs more than this, where is the money for holiday there? Or maybe if you think child benefit is a goldmine, have 8 kids

Apply for PIP for you and DLA for dc. Anxiety/depression- just pick. You just have to leave your morals elsewhere and exaggerate- works for many (unfortunately)

Its 17pw- childs food costs 17pw and more,so guaranteed it will be spent on a child. Not going i to cost of clothes, hobbies, increased heating costs, and so on.
