‘Official estimates suggest the cost of scrapping the cap will total £13.6 billion over the next five years.

The Tories said families currently affected by the cap are in line to receive windfalls worth an average £25,000 each over that period.

But the biggest families will gain far more. Thousands of families with five children will receive around £10,900 a year while those with six children will get an extra £16,600 a year.
Almost half of the families involved have no one in work.‘

Labour benefits plan 'will hand £25,000' to biggest jobless families

Ministers will bring forward legislation on Tuesday to lift the limit on benefit payments which was imposed in 2017.

Because, just maybe, parents should avoid having more children if they can’t afford them? It’s not the Government's responsibility to financially support people’s lifestyle choices. And to pre-empt those coming on here with whataboutery, ie what about those who already had children and something happened to push them into poverty, like divorce, loss of jobs; yes that could be an issue, but the reality is that those people will only be a very small percentage compared to those who think having kids is their right, whether they can afford them or not.

So the children are punished because of their parent’s actions? Is that ok?

What about children who in 2017 had two working parents who’ve since lost their jobs, become disabled etc? Should their parents have consulted their crystal balls more closely?

Ots not whatabboutery, it’s happening now and in huge numbers.

Any one of us can end up on welfare tomorrow. It’s there for all of us, but those more likely to be in welfare are those who lived in poverty as children. How about we stop benefit bashing and actually try and break the cycle?

Cantonatra · 03/02/2026 20:46

It’s the most vulnerable families with a disabled person in the home. It’ll lift children out of poverty. Be angry at the billionaires and corporations who dodge tax, not poverty stricken children.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:46

@Mapleleaf114that’s child benefit payment but not the child portion of UC which is much higher depending on your circumstances!

Still waiting for people to explain how the people whose benefits are cut are supposed to survive, so I guess no-one's questions are getting answered today.

The answer is these people don’t care.

Benefit claimants in all forms are scum of the earth to some people.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 03/02/2026 20:47

Livelovebehappy · 03/02/2026 20:26

Maybe get a job? Apparently to many on MN we have thousands of jobs in the care industry that need filling by immigrants, so why not fill them with people already here?

Just to reiterate, we're talking about disabled people here. Many are in no position to be doing a caring job for others.

24kPalamino · 03/02/2026 20:47

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 03/02/2026 20:43

Well of course it goes to the parents. Why wouldn’t it? Babies can’t spend money out their bank accounts.

Aside from the fact that not everyone affected by the cap “had more kids” (many have since lost their jobs or become disabled) , aside from the fact that loads of part time jobs to fit around the kids are freely available, why should the kids suffer for their parent’s choice (and non choices)?

Nobody wants to answer this

Probably because you have a very prejudiced view and don’t see the children behind these ranty MN posts.

You are ignoring that we simply don’t believe that money is going to the children. Did you know many children live in such poverty, because their parents lack financial skills? A child can live in poverty, because mum spends £249 a month on weight loss injections and there’s not much left over for food. More money doesn’t solve financially illiterate parents.
Perhaps they should be paid to attend parenting classes and CV writing courses.

XenoBitch · 03/02/2026 20:48

Penelope23145 · 03/02/2026 20:35

This is why so many people are trying to claim disability benefits though. The standard UC amount no where near covers living expenses especially if you are having to supplement rent out of that too as your UC rent element doesn't cover your full rent. Now that the LCWRA element is being cut I think we'll see even more people trying to claim PIP because they'll be unable to survive on £600 a month if they are too ill to work.

A FB post came up today.... a shared room in Brighton... £1000 pm. Not a single place in the country has a LHA that pays that much for any accommodation, let alone a room in a shared house.
People are going for PIP to top up rents... and that is not what it is for.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:49

@Cantonatrathis is one area that actually should be better funded! If all those who abuse the system didn’t, just think of the standard of care families with disabled children would get! That’s why I get so angry about those that abuse the system because it means those that genuinely need help don’t get as much as they should.

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:49

@XenoBitchmy LHA does for a two bed place! I’ve looked!

Penelope23145 · 03/02/2026 20:19

There are plenty of ways to help lift kids out of poverty rather than putting hundreds of extra pounds into their parents hands for years on end. Labour are making a huge mistake here.

Edited

So 3rd and 4th child dont eat or need clothes and shoes? Its measly 17pw,find out what EU states pay their families, will make you weep- amall Baltic states pay mother salary what she got at work or unemployment for 3 years, 700eur one of birtb payment, higher child benefit than in the UK, family allowance 400 eur with 3 kids,750eur a month for 7 kids, and with 3+kids large family ticket allowing discounts in cafes restaurants threatre etc

@Penelope23145totally! The woman I know isn’t even from the UK has savings with her fsmily
in her home country and prances around on Instagram eating in Michelin star
restaurants! Yet she couldn’t possibly get a decent job!!! And we’re told by various charities these stories are made up, but they are not! I do think single parent families are the ones that can manipulate the system the most (as a single mum myself I see it first hand)

Exactly i know a few people claiming benefits here and having savings and properties abroad as nobody checks. Same with women living with long term partners and claiming as single parent, again no checks done. The whole system is a joke

Fags. Nails. Hair. Botox . Mounjaro. Pub. Alcohol. Nights out. Too many pets. Mobile phones.

Unless you can provide a source for this all you’re showing is your embarrassing stupidity and prejudices rather than actual facts.

I honestly thought the benefit bashing to this level was a thing of the past and we all silently agreed that it was only the slope skulled half wits of the world who thought that benefit claimants were living wealthy lifestyles?!

southerngirl10 · 03/02/2026 20:50

I don't know if this is still the case but one of the big problems was always, 'if you get a job and don't like it you can't sign back onto benefits'. So some people stay unemployed.

People may feel they have too much to lose. Some of us may say tough s**t, I don't like my job, but no one wants to be stuck in a job they hate.

If that's the case, why don't you report them for benefits fraud?

purpleflowergirl · 03/02/2026 20:53

@FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoodsyeah and botox? You’re having a laugh! I know people that do exactly this! Get pets and don’t walk them, get Botox, nails, filler, but get UC it’s a joke!

Yup. I was totally naive to the PIP fraud until there was an autistic person on the BBC who said she used the PIP money for everyday bills. The comparison with a person trying to get by on benefits without blagging a disability was stark.

I have literal life experience of this. Not to mention I worked in a specific public sector role for 20 years. I’ve seen it all. Filthy children sleeping on dirty mattresses, shared with 4 dogs and 24 cats (not even joking).

FMLGFastMovingLuxuryGoods · 03/02/2026 20:07

Why ask the question then if you didn’t wanna hear an answer?

Would it get in the way of your hand writing over poor people?

But let’s say you’re right - are you suggesting that children should suffer in poverty because of the choices of their parents?

Well why should every else pay for parents bad choices? If people who don't get benefits have to restrict the size of their families for financial reasons why on earth should those who breed despite the fact it would cause poverty be bailed out.

Actions have consequences. This is basically rewarding failure/stupidity. If people are going to be constantly bailed out nothing will change

Mapleleaf114 · 03/02/2026 20:54

topicalaffair · 03/02/2026 20:45

The fact is the adults shouldn’t have children they can’t afford. But they do.

Says someone whos parents received child benefit when raising you and if you had kids before 2017 so did you.

most families are working households, take it as a measly rax return in exhange of raising future taxpayers and workforce, you know when you need care you expect these kids of today to pay your pension and work in care home if you need one, maybe current kids generation should one day think too why are they paying pension when people had decades to sort their retirement out

And the solution to this is not more benefits, its more council housing.

"blagging a disability"

What sort of doctor are you? If you can tell from a BBC report that an autistic person is "blagging a disability" perhaps you should use those superpowers for good.

You are confusing child benefit with UC.

Second time so far.
