To wonder why it’s seen that upper class people don’t eat fast food?

I always see it said that upper class people wouldn’t be seen dead in Mcdonalds etc but it’s a strange urban myth?

I am upper class and I cannot resist a Big Arch or a box of nuggets. Even more so the breakfast menu has me salivating.

So AIBU to think this is a silly urban myth?

What qualifies you to be upper class? (just curious as I don’t know anyone considered that particular class).

As a forriner who’s met people of every walk of life, I think the working class and upper class have more in common than people think, it’s the middle class (or people obsessed with it) that stand out here

Jilly Cooper points this out in her book 'Class'. Gentry and working class v similar.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 29/01/2026 23:14

The vair well to do people I know do not and will not eat McDonalds or similar.

It's frightfully common, yes, but the main reason is that all food should be real, balanced and made from scratch. Even the thought of ready made custard is too much, let alone a processed hamburger.

The only exception is perhaps on Sunday evenings when a light supper of smoked salmon or eggs is allowed.

PortSalutPlease · 29/01/2026 23:20

Are you the same poster who used to insist that in their vair vair naice village even the sheep were decorated with Christmas lights?

We’ve not had a batshit wanna be aristo thread for ages, I miss those!

Bubobubo · 29/01/2026 23:20

Bonsoir, I am French royalty and love nothing more than a McDonald's hash brown. Miam!

I’m an endentured peasant and I live on home grown organic lentils.

Honestly. People of higher social class probably eat less fast food - they have lower rates of obesity, which suggests they have a better (more natural, less processed) diet on average. But that doesn’t mean none of them ever eat it, any more than the higher rates of obesity in lower socioeconomic groups mean that none of them ever eat a vegetable.

There is a range of behaviours in any group.

Wasn’t Clarissa Dickson upper class? She and Jennifer Pattison (a bit posh too) were visibly fond of food 😁 (and still missed 😥).

Topofthecliffs · 29/01/2026 23:27

I am very posh (and in Debretts) but I have Married Down… My common husband loves nothing more than a trip down the cliff from Tops Towers to the Dirty Kebab shop. He has to wait till I am out for supper though as I detest them.
Seriously OP, who cares?

Rora24 · 29/01/2026 23:31

I don't know about upper class, but my mum went to a posh boarding school and is a proper "almond mum" who turns her nose up at McDonalds, or any unhealthy food chains... or any chain restaurant now that I think of it. I was sent to private school too but my dad would take me to McDonald's when I was younger and I always loved a mcnuggets and banana milkshake happy meal! Still do now when I'm hungover or had an awful day!

This is such a strange thread.

It's written by someone who changes their username. They've got at least 4 threads going at the moment.

SquirrelMadness · 29/01/2026 23:32

Where have you seen this myth? I've never really thought about what upper class people eat. I assume they have similar tastes to everyone else but are just less limited than everyone else.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 29/01/2026 23:33

Going back years didn't Prince William and Harry get taken to Macdonald's by Princess Diana.?
I have heard the late Queen would indulge in fish and chips occasionally but sent one of her footmen to collect it.

ButWhysTheRumGone · 29/01/2026 23:37

What’s a Big Arch?

InOverMyHead84 · 29/01/2026 23:40

Conversely. I'm rough as a badgers backside and love a bit of caviar.

JennyWren5 · 29/01/2026 23:45

NuffSaidSam · 29/01/2026 21:12

I'm a Princess (don't tell Wills I'm on Mumsnet, he'll go mad!) and I fed all of my three KFC as soon as they weaned. It's good for me, it's good for them.

Oi!! I’m Kate Middleton! Off with the identity thief’s head!

Desecratethebathroom · 29/01/2026 21:59

Who said you cared or had to care? It’s a post about some made up myth people say.

Just like the very factual reality that often lower class people are purposely unkind to those with more than them, because they are bitter and jealous.

This is so true…..

Empress13 · 29/01/2026 23:46

I’m upper class and love me a Wetherspoon

Abouttoblow · 29/01/2026 23:50

Desecratethebathroom · 29/01/2026 21:15

What else would an upper class person deem themselves as? I’m not going to pretend I’m working class just for the sake of being a social chameleon.

I'm really interested in what you feel defines you as "upper class?" Can you explain?

Luckystarss · 29/01/2026 23:51

Most of UK aristocracy’s wealth is derived from slave trade.

I don’t care if they Mc or not.

personally I want to avoid them at all costs .

Oi!! I’m Kate Middleton! Off with the identity thief’s head!

But surely Kate's middle class? Marriage can't change that. Parents were in trade (shudder).

Anyone truly UC that I've come across mostly seems to love boarding school slop, like nanny used to give them. Washed down with vintage claret, though.

MO0N · 29/01/2026 23:56

I'm as upper class as can be and I abhor such eateries!

PinkPanther57 · 30/01/2026 00:03

I sometimes grab a pizza if we’ve not bagged enough on an ordinary shooting weekend.

NicolaSturgeon · 30/01/2026 00:11

Quite the opposite! I'm working class through and through and I've never fancied a maccy peh (although of course I don't condone Greggs' having discontinued them). Don't even get me started on munchie boxes or white sausage suppers!!

EdithBond · 30/01/2026 00:15

Ilovecheeseyah · 29/01/2026 21:18

I am working class and absolutely love pheasant. lol

why is British society still so class obsessed?

Because the ‘upper classes’ want to hang onto their privilege?

My former ‘middle class’ neighbours used to feed their kids crap. Just expensive crap rather than cheap crap. Junk food’s designed to be addictive. No one’s immune.

Well spotted, that forriner!

Yup, the petit-bourgeoisie are terribly bothered about correctness, however it's defined by members of that class. The real working class don't give a rat's arse whether you say bog, lav or loo, and neither do the uppers. Both populations call a spade a spade - and are more likely to know the difference between a spade and a shovel than the censorious middles.

Exception for King Charles, who seems to have invented a personalised version of petit-bourgeoisie despite being the pinnacle of British aristocracy.

Me, I might be taken for an aristocrat due to my potty mouth, love of awful jokes, ability to speak French and not needing to work. I can't ride a horse, however, I dislike most fast food, and my income is the State pension. Bollocks, Jeeves, I'm a chav bastard, aren't I?!

Carla786 · 30/01/2026 00:38

Princess Diana certainly took her sons there!
