To wonder why it’s seen that upper class people don’t eat fast food?

I always see it said that upper class people wouldn’t be seen dead in Mcdonalds etc but it’s a strange urban myth?

I am upper class and I cannot resist a Big Arch or a box of nuggets. Even more so the breakfast menu has me salivating.

So AIBU to think this is a silly urban myth?

Never seen or heard it said.

But in general if you’re going to be seen anywhere better live than dead.

organisedadmin · 29/01/2026 22:00

Upper class as in above other people?

I thought it just meant your ancestors stole land etc & you are still enjoying the spoils today!

OriginalSkang · 29/01/2026 22:00

Which ancient mumsnetters remember the thing about the poster who went for dinner at some very posh people's house, and it was heinz tomato soup?

Desecratethebathroom · 29/01/2026 21:32

That’s the way to do it! I do laugh when I see people claiming the upper class only eat a small salad and fish. We do enjoy treats too!

No one claims this, or not that I have ever heard. Where have you got that from? Although it is true of Victoria Beckham so I could imagine someone saying it about Posh, but not the posh!

Yes, or backed the right side in a skirmish.

Who said you cared or had to care? It’s a post about some made up myth people say.

Just like the very factual reality that often lower class people are purposely unkind to those with more than them, because they are bitter and jealous.

Well, you did by posting a "look at me, I'm upper class" thread about a subject that has never crossed anyone's mind ever

stillawip · 29/01/2026 22:01

i agree, class has got nothing to do with wealth, & is pretty much determined at birth and doesn’t change, whatever you do with your life - you can change your circumstances but not your class. And it has absolutely no bearing on whether you are a decent member of society or not, and that is so much more important than class, so at the end of the day your class is irrelevant.

CannotBeInterestedInYourDrama · 29/01/2026 22:02

Upper class 😂😂😂

Delusions of grandeur, I think.

DoNoTakeNo · 29/01/2026 22:03

Speak for yourselves. I’m rough as a badger’s arse and only eat asparagus, truffles and Duchy products.

What else would an upper class person deem themselves as? I’m not going to pretend I’m working class just for the sake of being a social chameleon.

What about for the sake of not sounding like a fool?

onceagainforrose · 29/01/2026 22:03

I went to a northern university. Upper middle class kids were the ones where the parents brought Waitrose deliveries for the start of the term because the poor darlings couldn’t possibly live off Asda.

upper classes never identify as such.

Theonlywayicanloveyou · 29/01/2026 21:16

How do the upper class participants on this thread define their membership of that elite group? Everyone I’ve known who is genuinely upper class (literally about four people in my life) all thought they were upper middle class despite a couple of them holding inherited titles.

Edited

I’m wondering if they are labouring under the misapprehension that class is linked to income
We are minted top 10 percent high earners now in our 50s after a life of graft but still as working class common as muck!!!

In person you play it down to play it cool I guess as a bid to not make others feel intimidated by your wealth.

But class has nothing to do with wealth in the UK. It is all much more nuanced than that.

And I'm not lower class and jealous because I don't care about the alleged class status of a random mumsnetter who is more than likely posting from their council flat 😁

If you are equating wealth* with being upper class you are not upper class.

*wealth is a very middle class word!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/01/2026 22:06

As a mere guttersnipe, I have no idea why they'd make a point of eating it when they could have something much better. But then again, whilst there is a MaccyDs in every town, I've only ever seen ostrich burgers with rocket and cranberry on sale at Borough Market, which might be a bit of a trek if they're somewhere in the home counties and fancy a quick bit of scran between chukkas.

ThatCyanCat · 29/01/2026 22:07

A viscount once told me my Victoria sponge was superb.

BillieWiper · 29/01/2026 22:07

I think posh students do eat it, and hungover millennial poshos get the breakfast delivered or has their butler collect it.

I doubt elderly landed gentry eat it. I mean people who live rurally would logistically struggle to get it tasting fresh.

I think it's most popular with urban or suburban dwelling kids, teens and working to lower middle class people.

Shedeboodinia · 29/01/2026 22:08

I am all class and I love a kebab after karaoke daaan the boozer.

ResultsMayVary · 29/01/2026 22:08

I think people often like to pretend they are better than the group just below them so I'd expect upper middle to be avoiding crass takeaways or at least claiming they do. Upper class don't have to give a damn what others think and can eat whatever crap they like, dress badly and shag whoever they like.

I think everything can be enjoyed in moderation. Maybe because I’m older now, but I wouldn’t deny myself a treat.

Well, I’m one of those weirdos that gets physically ill from fast foods so they are not at all a ‘treat’ from my perspective.

If I went into any McDonald's on any given day, I doubt I'd find many upper-class people. Really, if you were rich, why would you buy a crappy hamburger instead of a good one? Most wealthier people acquire more refined tastes.

That said - although I'm not upper-class - I occasionally will buy McDonald's coffee, especially if I'm sneaking it into a movie. Also, thinking back, I was once working in a huge building that had a McDonald's in the basement on the way to the underground subway, and when for a while their breakfast sandwiches were on special very cheaply, I'd pick up one and eat it at the office.

It's been well known for a long time that upper and working classes share the same tastes in food. It's the middle classes wot are different.

May I recommend Tracey Ullman, Class Air, for more on the subject?
