Guardian is running a live feed, and a good unbiased source is Agenda Free TV on YouTube also running live feeds from the streets there.

Obviously multiple versions of events being thrown about as it's very fresh.

Sending solidarity across the pond to any US Mumsnetters in the locale and protesting the awful actions of ICE and disregard of your constitution by the "President".

I still can't believe that masked men are killing civilians and detaining children on the streets in AMERICA. In that bastion of democracy. And that it's allowed to happen. Slow learner, I realise.

The only thing that matters is that by the grace of God and the work that has gone before us, almost every on these boards is lucky enough to live in a country where it is unlawful to gun you down in the streets, and that where the rule of law dies there is an actual investigation
100% this. The normalisation of gun ownership has led citizens and law enforcers believing that their use in public is acceptable and defensible.

I'm glad I live in a country where I don't have to fear that Jo Blogg might have a gun in his back pocket and use it if I dare upsetting him. Same with law enforcers.

There was a case where a retired police officer shot a family man in a cinema because the family man, there with his wife just to watch a movie dared to tell the other guy to move or shut up (can't remember) and the retired police officer claimed he felt threatened as he thought family man had a gun...and he got away with the defense.

I'm grateful I can go to the cinema and not worry the person next to me as a gun and think they can shoot me if they misinterpreted any of my actions.

The normalisation of gun behaviour in the States is completely mental and ultimately destroying the country.

"The closest to it would be that when one officer disarmed him, he accidentally fired prompting the others thinking it was pretti shooting....nah, that doesn't make any sense. They surely would have all seen that the gun was in one of the officers hand, not Pretti."

I don't think most people would be that clear-headed in that scenario. They are all focussed on him on the ground, someone shouts "Gun" then a shot rings out, they start to step back , assume it came from the guy on the ground are unsighted because of all the other agents, and instinctively open fire.

I imagine in cases with actual armed assailants split second delays can be fatal...

Well, wouldn’t you then say that it’s better to not pepper spray somebody and wrestle them to the ground when they’re just standing by peacefully recording?

Would we not expect them to avoid unnecessary escalation? How about when they already have the death of Renee Good under their belts?

From the outside it would seem they’re purposely escalating the violence. One of the officers walks off, clapping his hands together afterwards.

There was a purge of non-Trumpers among the military top brass a while back. It's a tried and tested tactic.

Same as the law and judiciary.

Anyone who doesn’t support Trump is out and targeted by made up investigations, called names by him to encourage his moronic supporters to ridicule them and much worse.

One of the innumerable things which constantly strike me about Trump is that how can a grown man, the president of the US call people names as if he was a 10 year old in the playground and the people like that he does so?

This is statesmanlike, professional, presidential conduct???

But of course his vulgarity and petty grudge holding is seen as strong and macho by the hugely backward and sexist elements of the US.

They don’t like civilised communication because many don’t understand words with too many syllables but name calling is right up their street.

The gun was in his holster until ICE took it out. There’s no plausible explanation for shooting an unarmed man who is on the ground surrounded by ICE.

I presume this is all part of a plan to deter immigration.
Nobody will be trying to get into the US anymore because they have made themselves worse than the places immigrants are coming from.

I absolutely agree with guns being out of control in the US and am absolutely anti-gun. However, this man was shot by ICE who are Republican goons, those same Republicans who are rabid about defending their right to bear arms. But now they’re using it as an excuse to shoot their own citizens dead.

Yes, and I can't believe people on MN defend it. It is just mind-blowing. Even Trump supporters must see how horrendous this is and how the likes of Noem are lying through their teeth?

Passaggressfedup · 25/01/2026 09:22

Are you a trained law enforcement officer @Passaggressfedup with many years of experience including, one would hope, training on emotion management?
No, do any posters here do? Isn't mn just a forum for common people to share their views rather than an forum for expert professionals?

Or it is the case that expertise can only be demanded by those who think the guy intended to murder Renee for other reasons than self defense?

I think it’s more likely it’s to incite a violent response so Trump can invoke the insurrection law. We are in an imminent situation where ICE and Trump’s National Guard is potentially going to face off against Minneapolis National Guard and police force. I mean WTF?

Trump wants to stop the midterms from happening. His approval rates are dropping, and he’s trying to secure his power.

Fulmine · 25/01/2026 09:23

@Linzi2377, would you care to explain exactly how Alex Pretti was threatening police officers by filming ICE agents and helping a woman who had been pushed over?

ConcernedOfClapham · 25/01/2026 09:24

DdraigGoch · 24/01/2026 23:29

She had just returned from the school run to the place where she lived and found thugs harassing her neighbours. The regime's claims that she had been following agents around all day were blatantly false when you consider that she was murdered at 9:37am. ICE aren't going after illegal immigrants, if they were they wouldn't be in Minnesota in their thousands, they'd be in Texas and Florida. They are harassing anyone who looks a bit not-white, and any white person who tries to defend them.

Besides, getting in the way of an ICE officer is not an offence that carries the death penalty.

Yet.

Passaggressfedup · 25/01/2026 09:25

@NamefortheseThreads, I'm not using the normalisation of guns as an excuse for what has happened. On the opposite. Just that when neither citizens nor street officers hold guns, there isn't even a scenario to consider as to whether a shooting was justified or not.

Walkden · 25/01/2026 09:25

I'm.not saying it is justified as he was clearly unarmed when shot.

But how many of those agents would have seen the gun removed or been certain he did not have a second weapon?

Someone shouting gun, followed by a gunshot would cause an instinctive reaction....

The video from the “lady in red”
it appears he was protecting/helping someone else ICE were trying to grab.

they wrestle him down, remove his (legally carried) weapon, and shoot him, before shooting his body several times.

the lady has been taken into ICE custody. Alt.parks are trying to get her a lawyer. The deceased man was a US citizen.

i don’t understand how the same people so vociferously defending their 2nd amendment rights now somehow seem to think carrying a legal weapon while recording ICE means they have every right to execute you on the spot.

has Trump made a statement yet? Does Vance still think ICE has automatic immunity from prosecution? What lies has propaganda Barbie come up with? Or the puppy killer Noemi?

Did he have a gun? On the BBC they are saying he was carrying a phone.

Not that that makes any of your points invalid of course.

This is an absolutely chilling incident. Horrifying.

The number of people without legal immigration status in Minnesota is around 100,000. In Texas, Florida and other Southern red states it's in the millions. Yet interestingly the Trump administration has chosen to send ICE in/concentrate the most aggressive behaviour in Northern blue states.

This isn't about immigration - it's about political control. Push, push and push until people fight back and you can invoke the insurrection act and cancel elections. This is America's Reichstag (if we haven't reached that point already).

Is that the norm or has it changed recently?

Basic police training in the UK is 90 days. If they are only doing one aspect of that it would make sense that it was half?

Also I am assuming they are recuriting the "heavies" i.e. people who can handle highly volatile environments, so may the bar has to be low.

Clearly they aren't recruiting people who can handle volatile environments, given that they seem to go for the gun every time they are in one.

British police training carries on well beyond 90 days. When they start to work in police stations, police officers are assigned to another officer and are very closely watched and instructed indeed. They have to have a lot more experience and training before they are allowed to carry guns.

Wouldn't the insinctive reaction be to grab his arms and restrain him? There were enough of them. Shouldn't they be trained not to shoot "instictively"? Also, are they all sight impaired? Couldn't they see whether or not Alex Pretti actually had his hand on his gun/second gun?

The truth is Pretti stood up to them, like Good did. The gestapo don't take kindly to that.

So back to the cinema case. Is it ok to shoot and kill an innocent person just because they totally wrongly but still believed that their life was at risk.

Where does the line between "I fear for my life because all evidence is saying that my life is in danger" vs 'I fear for my life because I'm programmed to assume that any potential threat is a threat to my life".

Then they should’ve shot to disarm him, not beaten him and pumped a load of bullets into his body as he lay on the ground.

Many of the ICE agents are untrained thugs. Others have apparently been told to increase their level of violence for fear of losing their job. Put that lot amongst a load of civilians who have the right to free speech, in a state with the right to carry protected under their precious Second Amendment, and it’s bound to be a disaster.

The administration thrives on the resulting chaos.
