Fruit bowls

When I was a small child we had a fruit bowl on the kitchen table which my mother kept topped up, and we could freely pick from.
I do not have a fruit bowl and keep fruit in the fridge and we all just help ourselves.
Who has a fruit bowl?
I wonder if I don’t as my house has central heating (we didn’t growing up) and perhaps fruit lasts longer in the fridge?
Or that we have different types of fruit now to my mum used to buy (she mainly bought apples and maybe oranges, occasionally grapes) but I buy all sorts of things and either chop and keep in fridge or just leave in their packages.

what’s the AIBU um …. AIBU to keep fruit in its packaging in the fridge or do we need a fruit bowl 🤷‍♀️

we have a fruit bowl. Bananas, apples, oranges mostly. nectarines and plums in the summer. other soft fruits like grapes and berries are in the fridge

mellongoose · 17/01/2026 18:24

I voted yabu to not have a fruit bowl. We have one on the kitchen counter. Nobody eats the fruit stashed away in the fridge unless I put in front of them!

Beautifulbracelet · 17/01/2026 18:24

I have a fruit bowl full of dead fruit and a fridge full of it too 😬 we seem to have highs and lows when we love it then can’t be bothered with it…….

JakeyRolling · 17/01/2026 18:25

We have one for apples and oranges and a banana hook for those. Berries are in the fridge though.
My fruit bowl becomes the trifle bowl at Christmas

Koolandorthegang · 17/01/2026 18:26

I have one. It’s got apples, oranges and bananas in it. I fondly kids want fruit when they see it in the bowl. Monkey see monkey want. I have berries in the fridge and I forget about them a lot an then they become very expensive, furry compost

pouletvous · 17/01/2026 18:26

I have 2 or 3 fruit bowls

chilled bananas? No thanks

FuzzyWolf · 17/01/2026 18:27

We have a fruit bowl.

Oldandcobwebby · 17/01/2026 18:28

Of course we have a fruit bowl. We're not heathens, you know! 🙂

Barrellturn · 17/01/2026 18:29

We have a banana hanging hook thing but everything else is in the fridge

NewNewForest · 17/01/2026 18:29

My children definitely eat the fruit despite it being out of sight, it’s definitely not out of mind. I wonder how much more they’d eat if I got it out 😱 This might be the basis for a vaguely scientific experiment to while away the dark January days. It could be financially ruinous.

My bananas do not live in the fridge of course, they have a hooky stand like all sensible bananas do.

Some people still have them maybe good if you have young children

Januaryescape · 17/01/2026 18:30

Err I have several fruit bowls - on the basis that fruit snacks are freely available. dd is a fruit bat though!

Tulcan · 17/01/2026 18:30

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have a fruit bowl.

hahagogomomo · 17/01/2026 18:31

We have a fruit bowl but only usually has apples, lemons and limes in it (I use the latter 2 for cooking) other fruit is in fridge

BG2015 · 17/01/2026 18:31

We have a fruit bowl. Apples, nectarines and bananas hanging. Kiwis in a smaller bowl and grapes, blueberries in the fridge.

Vladandnikki · 17/01/2026 18:31

We have a fruit bowl that currently has raisins, bananas a toy car, some pencils a notebook 😂

Pollqueen · 17/01/2026 18:32

I have a lovely Portuguese fruit bowl which reminds me of summer holidays. It holds apples, satsumas, avocados, mangoes, bananas, kiwi, lemons and limes atm. Other fruit such as blueberries and strawberries are in the fridge

WhineAndWine1 · 17/01/2026 18:32

My one is currently full on mini sized mars etc and sweets from Xmas

Fidgety31 · 17/01/2026 18:33

I have a fruit bowl. Couldn’t eat apples and oranges straight out the fridge - would hurt my teeth .

SP2024 · 17/01/2026 18:33

We do, but it’s mainly bananas. I keep the apples. Pears. Grapes. Berries and even satsumas in the fridge as otherwise they go off. My kids are too little to reach it anyway for now.

soupyspoon · 17/01/2026 18:33

The only thing worse than fruit is cold fruit

We do have a fruit basket, metal, I found that bowls mean something is squished on the bottom and goes horrible.

I get fruit to cook with, I dont eat it raw but I think most people love fruit.

countrygirl99 · 17/01/2026 18:34

Fruit loses flavour in the fridge.

FolioQuarto · 17/01/2026 18:37

Apples, oranges, satsumas and lemons go in the fruit bowl here, although ours is more like a shallow basket. Berries and grapes go in the fridge.

I get mildly annoyed when holiday cottages do not have a large fruit bowl and I have to improvise with a casserole dish.

FolioQuarto · 17/01/2026 18:39

soupyspoon I do not generally like cold fruit but when we have heatwaves there is nothing nicer mid afternoon than an orange which has been in the fridge for 24 hours.
