Really scary winds and lightning in cornwall!

justasking111 · 08/01/2026 20:13

Trees come down, power cuts result where we are. It's best to leave the roads clear for the emergency services than become another problem for them.

Marylou62 · 08/01/2026 20:27

We've just had a very scary few hours here in Cornwall. 123mph winds recorded. Trees and power lines down. We've lost our fence and by the sound of it maybe some roof. But I'm not venturing out yet to check.Glad I took it seriously. It was a rare red weather warning.

Marylou62 · 08/01/2026 20:28

46,000 homes without power now. I'm one of them.

Been all the news and weather..

It's just a bit of snow?

jinn2025 · 08/01/2026 19:21

Batten down the hatches! How ridiculous. Fear mongering press have to got to you about the Storm-danger life. It’s pathetic

Hopefully tomorrow morning the news won't be telling us about anyone who was seriously injured or killed. Maybe because they listened to the RED weather warning.

Have you read posts from MNers with very high winds above? Or those cut off by deep snow?

MrsWinslowsSoothingSyrup · 08/01/2026 20:37

Ilovecakey · 08/01/2026 20:29

It's just a bit of snow?

But we are British and we love talking about the weather. I'm not even being sarcastic.

I probably talk about / think about / listen to / research the weather for over an hour each day if I add it all up.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Alexandra2001 · 08/01/2026 20:37

I spoke too soon, it has picked up in the last hour or so, very scary & we haven't got it like further West, still have power..... hope i ve not curses that!

Newyearsameme26 · 08/01/2026 21:20

@Marylou62 thinking of you. Sounds terrifying. We just have a crazy blizzard going on with all transport stopped and schools closed. We are rural and I hate it. The red warning sounded awful.

TotHappy · 08/01/2026 21:32

Here on the edge of Camborne and our loft hatch keeps banging like the dickens but not sure if some tiles are off the roof. Brief power outages earlier on but not for the last hour. Hope its abating from us but I fear its moving east.

Nincompoo · 08/01/2026 21:38

It is absolute carnage here with people stuck in their cars, crashed, wedged on curbs, the wrong way round on the road. My son is out there trying to dig people out.

Anyone would think we hadn’t had 2 days warning!

Trouble is, as seen on this thread, some people are determined to see it as scaremongering or marketing or (no pun intended) being a snowflake. We all coped with it in the past without the need for warnings apparently, but now we are conditioned to be frightened. All utter nonsense, obviously.

Same 😬 I love looking at the forecast, and am mildly thrilled when the weather turns (and heavy rain suddenly starts, or the sun comes out, or I can hear a gust of wind, or when there’s a sparkling frost). The past year has been an absolute joy, a beautiful hot summer and a mostly cold and sunny winter with some lovely frosts. Even Halloween was dry, cloudy with the moon coming out now and then - exactly how it should be.

sittingonabeach · 08/01/2026 21:41

@Nincompoo maybe some of them are the idiots on here who have minimised the storm or who have somehow managed to miss the news that there is a storm

Probably MNers who have dismissed it all as ‘scaremongering’ 🙄

We always left it till daylight. One roof slate went through the bonnet of our car, others landed around the front door. Neighbours shed landed in the lane. Our conservatory exploded outwards.

Ihatetomatoes · 08/01/2026 19:09

Your "cooo errr Government warning" posted earlier certainly came over as mocking.

However, as of the evening of Thursday, January 8, 2026, there are currently more than 9,500 homes without power in Cornwall due to Storm Goretti. Also over a 1000 homes have lost power in Devon. Hopefully, people will heed warnings and no one will lose their life.

There's 41000 now in Cornwall alone without electric - it's been brutal & very scary since 7pm. Loads of damage.
We won't have electric until tomorrow.

justasking111 · 08/01/2026 21:49

Stay safe 🙏

Port1aCastis · 08/01/2026 21:54

OK so I'm stood down for a bit so have come home, agreed to be on call later on. I have lived here on the Lizard all my life and I have never seen weather like tonight. It's carnage out there-
Hope everyone in Cornwall is ok I seem to have lost the roof of my garage and a few tiles from my house roof, one of which has obliterated my car windscreen.FFS!
Just going to get changed and then I'll read the thread through

ConnectionsChamp · 08/01/2026 22:11

Good luck everybody in affected areas. We seem to be fine in rainy London. I really hate the wind, even when it is not quite a storm. I hate the noise, I hate the mess and I find it really disruptive. Thinking of everybody affected.

Beach debris thrown up onto the promenade in Barmouth after a storm was eye opening. Cobbles the size of half bricks. Wouldn't want to get hit by that.

Seen slates come off roofs in much less winds. Trees come down etc. all are life threatening if you are in the wrong place.

Sartre · 08/01/2026 22:20

No snow here at all, just miserable rain.

PaperBlueCornflower · 08/01/2026 22:24

In Cornwall too, good to see messages from others here, thinking of you especially those without power. We've had flickering lights but not lost power so far (fingers crossed). Loads of trees down blocking routes to school etc some flying debris.

All the best to everyone experiencing difficult conditions.
