We have had a bit of snow here and it’s just started again. Not much wind though.

My gym is closed tomorrow, apparently. I think I’ll manage.

In Cornwall too, good to see messages from others here, thinking of you especially those without power. We've had flickering lights but not lost power so far (fingers crossed). Loads of trees down blocking routes to school etc some flying debris.

All the best to everyone experiencing difficult conditions.

Take care. Insurance people are going busy tomorrow. My lights are off but I have a Tilly lamp so I'll beo.

I'm in South East Cornwall. Rainy and a tad windy this afternoon but nothing out of the ordinary. Some friends, like posters on here, were wondering what all the fuss was about.
It then went eerily calm and was a very warm 12 degrees for a couple of hours. At around 7.30 all Hell broke loose. We lost power and had 70 mph winds with gusts up to 90, so loud and very scary. Not the strongest winds across the county by any means.
We now have trees and power lines down not to mention the obligatory wheelie bins flying everywhere. Lots of damage to homes and businesses.
50,000 are currently without power.
Still think the Met Office was scaremongering? I don't and I thank the emergency services and Utility workers for going above and beyond on the worse night I can remember.
Thinking of everyone caught up in this.

Cornwall Live: Trees down, roads blocked

Trees down, roads blocked, 110mph winds and over 45,000 without power

Schools and shops closed early as winds of up to 100mph loomed

The constant howl of the wind was horrific, North of Cornwall and thank god a little bit inland. It felt like the windows would blow in for quite a while. I've never known weather like this and don't want to experience it again any time soon. I think it is easing off a little here, we lost power quite a few hours ago and it won't be restored until tomorrow morning now.

Exasperateddonut · 08/01/2026 22:52

Thinking of all of you affected by this- there seems to be quite the damage out there. We’re south west but seem to be right on the edge and it’s just a bit wet.

I did make a curry as it’s lovely to eat curry in a storm all snuggled on the sofa. And I put an extra tie on the bbq cover. Not sure that’s prepping or just getting annoyed by the flapping noise.

The weather becoming warm 12c. Reminds me of a story I read where the same thing happened in Ireland a century ago. It was warm then hell was unleashed. I think North Wales copped it and as far as Liverpool.

Batten down the hatches! How ridiculous. Fear mongering press have to got to you about the Storm-danger life. It’s pathetic

I think you are the one looking pathetic and ridiculous.

We’ve had storm force winds of up to 100mph for the past three hours down here. Power cuts all over, exploding cables, trees down… and the real extent of the damage won’t be clear until daylight.

What do people get out of minimising and dismissing events like this? Perhaps you’re just ‘too cool for a crisis’? Or maybe it’s all one big conspiracy?

There's 41000 now in Cornwall alone without electric - it's been brutal & very scary since 7pm. Loads of damage.
We won't have electric until tomorrow.

Stay safe.

The Met Office rarely give red weather warnings so why people can be so scathing or call people ridiculous to be a bit worried.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 08/01/2026 23:17

Are we forgetting that we live on an island that can have all four seasons in one day and all four seasons going on in one country (well three little ones really).
Normal evening here (London) so no need for emergency supplies apart from a good book so I don't have to listen to Trump but many people aren't so lucky.

"110mph wind recorded!
Posted by National Coastwatch Institute (NCI) Boscastle, wind speeds at 8pm. Max gust of 110mph"

There are over 65,000 homes without power in Cornwall and damage in the area will be assessed tomorrow. But according to you, its "pathetic" and the press are fear mongering. You were wrong.

YouBelongHere · 09/01/2026 00:26

Still awake in the West Midlands - not had the wind yet but my lights flickered a couple of times, I've switched to my fairy lights 😅Hoping the power doesn't go out but should probably head to bed soon anyway.

LOTS of snow outside. Hope everyone in the worst affected areas is okay and the power comes back on soon!

Rowgtfc72 · 09/01/2026 03:33

East coast of england- torrential rain through the night and 30mph gusts of wind. Will make for an interesting bike ride to work in just over an hour!

I think on here sometimes people try so hard to look like the ‘cool kid’ that they end up looking absolutely ridiculous 😳.
Lots of snow here overnight. Just had a message from the bus company for my elder 2 to say that their bus to school isn’t running. Not sure I fancy driving them in.

Edited

My husband's uncle lived up a steep hillside he'd sledge down to the main road where he'd left his car during snowy winters. If the roads were bad he'd walk back home pulling the sledge.

So I'd stick to sledge tomorrow, school might be shut anyway.

Do people think they are clever when saying 'what storm'? It's on the national news, it's all over my social media, so even if it not in your area surely you have access to something that tells you there is a pretty big storm coming. We are close to a red alert area

This

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 09/01/2026 08:52

We are in an area without any storm/weather warnings, it's all going north and west of us. I am still very conscious that that's not the case for most of the country. My mum is in the west of the country, I have friends in Devon and Cornwall, so am thinking of all of them.

Just because it doesn't affect you directly, don't pretend you don't know about it. I've never been to Venezuela or to Minneapolis but I'm still concerned about what's happening there.

TotHappy · 09/01/2026 09:26

Everyone OK this morning?
No damage here thankfully by midnight it was just a 'normal' level of windy

Boopydoo · 09/01/2026 09:37

I've never known weather like this and don't want to experience it again any time soon. I think it is easing off a little here, we lost power quite a few hours ago and it won't be restored until tomorrow morning now.

Power was restored around 9am, ten minutes after receiving a text from the national grid saying it would take until Sunday. It has been a long and rough night, the red wind warning ended at 11pm, but the amber warning was still in place so it continued to be really windy making the tiles shift and move all night and the pressure build up indoors was causing everything to move so constant noises preventing me from sleeping.
Further south roads are closed with multiple trees down. I'm lucky to have electric back, family further south are without and were also informed by the national grid that it might take until Sunday morning to restore the power. Many schools down that way are closed, whilst several in this area are just opening later.
It was horrific here, but it was a lot worse further down in the South West, Lands End, St Ives, Hayle and Penzance areas.

Peridot1 · 09/01/2026 10:38

Hope everyone who lost power gets it back soon. And well done to all the emergency services and electric crews etc who have no choice but to be out working in it all.

Some of the comments here have been ridiculous. It makes some people look so ignorant.

Marylou62 · 09/01/2026 17:38

Newyearsameme26 · 08/01/2026 21:20

@Marylou62 thinking of you. Sounds terrifying. We just have a crazy blizzard going on with all transport stopped and schools closed. We are rural and I hate it. The red warning sounded awful.

Thank you . It was truly terrifying. The roof rattled for hours and the wind howled. It sounded like a jet engine outside.
Our internet connection and the electricity has just been restored.
I am truly thankful that's over. And grateful we came through it. At least 10 of my neighbours roofs are badly damaged. And we only lost half a fence and our gate. I could walk through 6 gardens over all the fallen fences.
Cornwall was lucky. 123mph wind speed was recorded near Padstow. I've not been able to listen to much news but I believe there wasn't any loss of life? Maybe because most people listened to the RED weather warning and didn't think it was a conspiracy or worried they were overreacting.

Chinsupmeloves · 09/01/2026 18:32

The blast from last week didn't last as long in our area so went ahead and met up with friends on the night.

pinkypoo8 · 09/01/2026 18:56
