BBC is reporting 98mph winds.

Tarkan · 08/01/2026 18:32

No storm up here but it’s icy AF. I broke a glass table earlier and DH found our wheely bin was totally frozen shut when he went to put the bits of it in the bin.

I was meant to be playing darts tonight but the games have all been cancelled because of ice and fog so staying cosy in the house instead.

Ha, so typical and back in the day, nobody was told to just stay home and not worry about setting work. There was even mention of live teaching.

Back in the day, when it snowed, teachers were told to go to their nearest school as the LEA ran them all. Kids were sent home early in 8 inch snow. (mid 1970s) More people worked nearer home. Fewer cars. More local shops.

How did people cope with rain/snow/wind/ice before we had all these dire warnings and ridiculous hyperbole? We just got on with it - schools and offices open, no panic buying, no scaremongering. If you lived through the Great Storm of 1987, this is nothing.

We were warned about that. People are coping now - the OP moved her main shop forward a day, that’s all. No panic buying. Who is scaremongering? I don’t get what’s annoying you.

The great storm of 87. Perhaps it would have been better if we did have warnings. I knew 2 people who died and I was stuck at my grandmas with my dog as a child because there was no way we could have walked home. If there had been a warning I wouldn't have risked going to her house in the first place.

I was in Lanzarote with my lovely Mum and my Dad who ironically was a BBC newsreader was trapped in London. Our dog was left at home and was in the house for three days on his own until my Dad finally got home!
We couldn’t get home for another week,so yes a weather warning would have been very useful!
Reading some of the ignorant comments on this thread makes me despair, absolutely nothing wrong preparing for worse case scenario and then all good if the predictions are wrong !

ParisianLady · 08/01/2026 18:51

@IdleThoughts

I’m in rural north Scotland it is hip deep snow for me. We haven’t been out of the house for days as we live up a long narrow road and can’t clear the snow at the moment. Even if we got the snow off the ice would be treacherous. No post, no deliveries.

Luckily we are well prepared with fuel, food, candles and wine so all is well for a few more days.

Jumimo · 08/01/2026 18:52

Some right twats on here. Some of us are under severe weather warnings.

FatEndoftheWedge · 08/01/2026 19:00

Some news says home counties but as I'm looking I can't see anything at all

Falmouth, Cornwall. Yet, you were the poster mocking the warnings! Red warning is pretty rare, so hopefully too many people won't mock it and take advice instead.

I wasn’t mocking as I know what it can be like here and was fully expecting it to be bad and it is here right now. I had already cancelled what I was going to be doing tonight.

Wind is what is forecast and we now have pretty intense lightning.

Gusts are at 80+ at the moment.

Your "cooo errr Government warning" posted earlier certainly came over as mocking.

However, as of the evening of Thursday, January 8, 2026, there are currently more than 9,500 homes without power in Cornwall due to Storm Goretti. Also over a 1000 homes have lost power in Devon. Hopefully, people will heed warnings and no one will lose their life.

I know the South West in particular

  • "Storm Goretti brings gusts of 99mph to Cornwall as a rare red wind warning in in force for parts of south-west England
  • The Met Office warns to expect "flying debris resulting in danger to life" in the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, with all trains cancelled
  • This sort of warning is only issued in the most extreme circumstances

Storm Goretti live updates: 99mph gusts as red warning in force for parts of UK

The Met Office warns of "dangerous stormy winds" in the south-west of England on Thursday evening - all trains have been cancelled in Cornwall from 18:00.

Boopydoo · 08/01/2026 19:16

Wind speeds of 101mph recorded at Lands End, many are without power down at that end too.

I'm only (only!) going back 15 years. It was the norm to be told to stay/go home, no mention of work. Mid 70s, we were sent home as kids, no work, lots of snow! Was it 82, heck of a lot of snow, I remember digging us out of our street which never saw a snow plough. Great times!

Tdcp · 08/01/2026 15:01

There is danger to life for a lot of people, winds of 70-100mph are dangerous that isn't scaremongering. We're expected to hit 30cm of snow, people are at work and need to know so they can get home safely. If you're in an unaffected area then great for you but others are not.

This but everyone is me me me as usual.

jinn2025 · 08/01/2026 19:21

Batten down the hatches! How ridiculous. Fear mongering press have to got to you about the Storm-danger life. It’s pathetic

You know people die in storms, and if possible it’s better to stay indoors? That’s not fear mongering, it’s common sense. Something many are sadly lacking.

Have you actually looked at the detailed forecast? The far south west will be getting 95mph gusts.

You go try standing out in that.

Some absolute whoppers on this thread.

Bet you’re the type of person who watches YT conspiracy videos and believes they don’t have to pay for utilities.

LilyMumsnet · 08/01/2026 19:26

@Trethew we've popped an email over to you - could you take a look?

Nugg · 08/01/2026 19:29

No. But I could manage if I needed to it’s only me and my dog and she’s got everything she needs which would be my priority plus I could walk and get stuff

inickedthisname · 08/01/2026 19:31

To answer your question OP, I haven’t done any particular preparations but I do already get a bit of a stockpile sorted on the run up to Christmas as my area is prone to floods which cut us off from the local towns (all only 10 mins drive, but impassable if flooded!), and since we are high ground with lots of hills between here and everywhere else, if it snows we can end up stuck from that too. We have bottled water, a camping stove, candles, plenty of blankets!

We are predicted 20cm of snow.

Mocking is more pathetic. It's just advice. You can ignore.

Taking precautions whilst a severe storm rages is sensible.

Thats mad! i'm in SE Cornwall, hardly a gust and i'm on a hill! but further down, its a different story isn't it.

Gently, i will educate you... the media is not the Met Office, its the Met Office that decide on weather warnings etc.

the Media report.
