I agree schools did close for snow in the 70s and 80s. I remember having lots of snow days as a child

Dery · 08/01/2026 16:46

@Netcurtainnelly Yep - i’ve changed plans. Was supposed to be travelling back from East Midlands to London this evening (leaving about 8.30/9 pm) - am just about to arrive in London about 5-6 hours ahead of schedule. My dad’s done his big shop 24 hours early also.

How did people cope with rain/snow/wind/ice before we had all these dire warnings and ridiculous hyperbole? We just got on with it - schools and offices open, no panic buying, no scaremongering. If you lived through the Great Storm of 1987, this is nothing.

Luckily the 1987 storm happened overnight, when most people were safely tucked up in bed. If it had struck in the day while people were out and about, it would have been a much worse story.

Many changes were made as a result to ensure we could better predict another storm like that, so even then it was recognised we needed to be better prepared.

Papyrophile · 08/01/2026 16:47

It's blowing a hoolie here (SE Cornwall) and raining quite hard, but the wind is expected to drop by midnight. There will be falling trees, and there was a lot of water on the roads earlier. Just hoping the tree across the road doesn't fall in our direction.

ReignOfError · 08/01/2026 16:51

I bought snowshoes for the grandkids. Everything crossed for snow not bloody rain now.

HoppityBun · 08/01/2026 16:54

There’s not going to be a storm where I am

FrankSinatraonToast · 08/01/2026 16:55

I have shopping delivered on a Friday but last time there was a bit of snow, Sainsbury's cancelled it and will probably do the dame tomorrow. So I went out and did the shopping this afternoon and cancelled my Sainsbury's order. I'm retired so don't have work to worry about. If it's very wet tomorrow or snowy I'll have a lie-in and a PJ day.

You probably don’t need to make any plans then. Or respond to the thread!

CharlotteCChapel · 08/01/2026 16:56

We're expecting wind and rain, so situation normal. We may get snow in the early hours of Saturday.

Redwinedaze · 08/01/2026 17:00

It does make me laugh when people can’t see an issue outside their only little village or city without considering those posters who might actually be impacted by the storm and their dismissals of, well I’m alright so the rest of you must be simply dramatic type replies. As long as you’re ok thats ok then 👌

We are expecting heavy rain and I have a dyke outside my house which can be prone to flooding so potentially sand bags but otherwise ready, hope everyone, homes, businesses etc are ok

lifeonmars100 · 08/01/2026 17:00

i went out yesterday and got essentials such as bread eggs, milk and toilet roll. Made a massive stew in my slow cooker and am going to make a chicken curry tomorrow so that is plenty of food , Very cold here but no sign of the storm as yet

piscofrisco · 08/01/2026 17:01

Any snow forecast now downgraded to boring rain which will not stop me from having to go to work tomorrow so I’m very put out

Playingvideogames · 08/01/2026 17:02

Only a wind warning here (SW) but it starting to pick up already.

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/01/2026 17:06

Cooo Errr!!!! Government warning!!!

we’re doomed!!! 😁

I've bought all the loo rolls in Waitrose and am hiding in the cellar.

sittingonabeach · 08/01/2026 17:11

Do people think they are clever when saying 'what storm'? It's on the national news, it's all over my social media, so even if it not in your area surely you have access to something that tells you there is a pretty big storm coming. We are close to a red alert area

To be fair, its a warning, and trees come down, around lot of the rural areas, so it seems sensible to avoid travelling if not urgent.

Naturally, there will be people who mock warnings, but no one has to pay any attention if they feel they don't want to.

The more idiotic ones go out because they have been advised not to, by "the government" 😂

Still, you can't fix stupid 🙄

I know, it always surprises me on here that people seem so proud of being ignorant as to what is going on around them!

cardibach · 08/01/2026 15:06

The national news and weather covers other areas though. It’s just surprising there are people who never catch a news or weather bulletin. It’s does cover most of the country (though I appear to be in a micro climate bit with storm all round but nothing here).

That sounds like where we used to live

d317 · 08/01/2026 17:18

We live in the place where it’ll get worst hit, and all I can do is hope and pray a tree doesn’t come down, as that’s what usually happens when we have a storm, so getting the chain saw ready is what we should do !!

Yes I find the mocking a bit distasteful. Red wind alerts mean there is likely to be a lot of damage. Three people died during our last one, entire forests were devastated and will take several generations to recover, people were left for 10+ days without power and heat and had to rely on food vans or move to a community centre, people’s roofs came off, huge amounts of damage to personal property and schools and community spaces, and it was genuinely frightening listening to the wind howl and watching bits of people’s homes flying across the road and our garden. But people seem to think it’s funny 🤷‍♀️

I had no idea there was going to be a storm! I doubt it will affect me much, I'm indoors.

I looked at forecast and it said, "Heavy rain and a moderate breeze". Tomorrow is, "light rain and a fresh breeze". No word of any storm.

I've checked, it's 'Storm Goretti' and affecting SW England, notably Cornwall and the Scillies. It looks ominous. I'm on the outskirts of London therefore safe so far.

Those affected have my sympathy.

Anxietyspiral · 08/01/2026 17:21

Dd just got a government warning on her tablet. She doesn't have a sim card in it and I haven't had one to my phone. How do they send them out? I thought it would be by the phone networks rather than WiFi?
