Dd just got a government warning on her tablet. She doesn't have a sim card in it and I haven't had one to my phone. How do they send them out? I thought it would be by the phone networks rather than WiFi?

You can still call the emergency services without a SIM card. They send the alerts via the towers using a generic network which taps into the phones modem etc.

Apparently the storm is missing my area completely, looks like 15mph winds and a bit of rain.

Likewise. I'll do a standard grocery order for delivery on Saturday and accept it might arrive late.

If I was in an area that would be affected, I'd have put in a grocery order for this evening.

It wouldn't be a much larger order than usual, because it's just me at home.
With more family members to take into account, I can imagine that needing more planning.

Ah ok, thanks. Its weird I haven't had one.

To be fair, its a warning, and trees come down, around lot of the rural areas, so it seems sensible to avoid travelling if not urgent.

Naturally, there will be people who mock warnings, but no one has to pay any attention if they feel they don't want to.

Edited

I’m going nowhere this evening, it’s pretty gusty out there at the moment.

We are at risk here with trees coming down, it is what it is and just have to sit it out.

dahliadream · 08/01/2026 17:29

No, weather forecast just looks a bit rainy which isn't unusual for January. Keeping my Friday plans.

ivegotthisyeah · 08/01/2026 17:31

I am in north Yorks but forecast is rain!
would be great if people could put a rough location when commenting so I can be envious if you do have lots of snow!

Playingvideogames · 08/01/2026 17:18

Ooooh I’m not far away - and coastal - where are you (roughly)??

I’m in Falmouth. To be fair, it’s not great here at the moment.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 08/01/2026 17:32

I'm going to buy all the loo roll I can find within a 10 mile radius then start some looting.

Port1aCastis · 08/01/2026 17:32

I'm with the coastguard so on standby here

Sold out in our Tesco Metro

High Winds here and driving rain, Ocado came this morning so no need to go anywhere and wouldn’t want to in this. I’m in Wilts

youalright · 08/01/2026 17:34

Clefable · 08/01/2026 17:18

Yes I find the mocking a bit distasteful. Red wind alerts mean there is likely to be a lot of damage. Three people died during our last one, entire forests were devastated and will take several generations to recover, people were left for 10+ days without power and heat and had to rely on food vans or move to a community centre, people’s roofs came off, huge amounts of damage to personal property and schools and community spaces, and it was genuinely frightening listening to the wind howl and watching bits of people’s homes flying across the road and our garden. But people seem to think it’s funny 🤷‍♀️

I think its because of the billion times we are told these things will happen and they don't. If the weather is bad absolutely don't go out unless absolutely necessary. And don't be that idiot playing by the sea. But I don't think its something you overly need to plan for

Falmouth, Cornwall. Yet, you were the poster mocking the warnings! Red warning is pretty rare, so hopefully too many people won't mock it and take advice instead.

There are already wave watchers here taking risks and putting themselves in danger to get a picture.

how is it - my son says he got an alert on his phone. He may be taking it a bit more seriously. Im in touch with his friend who is down there too, who seems to have taken it on board.
Tonight is not the night to go out on a uni pub crawl

I don't know about Falmouth specifically but a lot of places, shops and pubs etc are just voluntarily closing and encouraging people to stay at home.

Live my life and not scaremonger on the internet probably.

You could always feel free not to click on a thread that doesn't interest you? As my nan always said, "if you can't say anything nice, then you don't need to say anything at all".

CinnamonBuns67 · 08/01/2026 18:00

I'm not sure if it's going to happen for us, weather forecasters can't seem to make up their minds. One minute it's snowing all night, next minute it'll be heavy rain and then back and forth between the two so I suppose it's wait and see.

meatyryvita · 08/01/2026 18:01

A friend lives in Jersey and they have been advised to stay indoors until tomorrow morning.

GreenSmithing · 08/01/2026 18:03

I'm in an area forecast 15cm of snow, which will be the most we've had since 2010. I'm not too worried about that, but it's forecast 7 degrees by Sunday which is likely to mean localised flooding

ToWhitToWhoo · 08/01/2026 18:04

In my area, no snow is expected: just gusty winds overnight and in the morning. I will WFH in the morning if possible, and just go out in the afternoon, as I have balance problems not improved by gusts, But I don;t think half a day reuires an advance shop, and THANK GOD NO SNOW EXPECTED! I realize that where I am (south east England) is less badly affected than some parts of the country.

Cherrybomb00 · 08/01/2026 18:28

I’m semi rural West Midlands in an amber warning area for snow. The first flakes starting falling about half an hour ago and it’s settling now. The weather app says it’s 2 degrees but feels like minus 7 and it’s forecast to snow all night. I did pop to the supermarket this morning to pick up an extra loaf of bread and a few bits so that we can hunker down for the next few days but I had a basket’s worth of food - hardly panic buying. I’ll be surprised if the DCs school is open tomorrow, thankfully both me and DH are working from home.
