Why do we use cutlery in restaurants

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:48

I was thinking this recently

Those knives, forks and spoons have been INSIDE thousands of other people's mouths.

I was starting to get disgusted by the thought. I think it is such a weird practice.

I have now bought my own cheap plastic disposable cutlery, and bring it with me

They are washed, far better than using disposable

Octavia64 · 02/01/2026 20:49

Better than using your hands.

especially for soup

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/01/2026 20:50

They get washed and put through a sanitiser between each use, as do all the plates, cups and glasses.

minipie · 02/01/2026 20:50

Good one OP

Arlanymor · 02/01/2026 20:50

Because they get washed at such a high temperature there is no risk of contamination. Do you take your own bedsheets and pillow cases to hotels? Or your own mattress? Also plastic disposables are shit for the planet.

Strawberryfruitcorner · 02/01/2026 20:51

I would avoid using any public toilet then if that bothers you 😂

I disagree. I worked in some restaurants when I was younger.

In some of those restaurants. the cutlery got a very quick rinse in the sink

They weren't washed well.

How long ago was this? It’s a big part now of giving places H&S ratings - how they sanitise crockery and cutlery. Maybe you worked in some bad places? Did you ever get sick eating there? At least get reusable cutlery so you’re not contributing to plastic waste.

wonderstuff · 02/01/2026 20:54

I have no issue with this, it’s clearly sanitary as otherwise people would be getting sick. If you want to use your own please get washable reusable set, plastic is not good for the environment.

Contycont · 02/01/2026 20:54

I'd rather use sanitised metal cutlery than increase my micro plastics consumption.

It would be sensible to ponder whether the dishwasher used is hot enough or if it rinsed the detergent off sufficiently.

Wiping the cutlery provided with a food safe wipe or bringing metal cutlery would make more sense really.

Edited for typo.

CactusSwoonedEnding · 02/01/2026 20:56

Are you also one of the weird people who hover above loo seats because of not wanting the skin of your thighs to toch where the skin of someone else's thighs have touched?

Restaurants have hygiene ratings. If you stick to places with the highest ratings you can be confident that they keep everything clean.

You may need psychological support if you can't shake this irrational anxiety about touching thoroughly clean things.

WhateverTarrance · 02/01/2026 20:57

What about the plate? Will you give the chef a plastic one for your food?
Imagine all the saliva traces and germs on them.

Soonenough · 02/01/2026 20:57

Food poisoning or feeling ill is mostly due to the actual food being contaminated or incorrectly cooked . If this is a problem for you then your life will be severely restricted.

What are you on about? I've worked in loads of food and beverage establishments in the last 30ish years and in every single one opening the dishwasher when it pipped at you nearly took your eyebrows off from the heat!

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/01/2026 20:59

Bit messy eating without.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 02/01/2026 21:00

I’ll take the non existent risk if someone else is loading the dishwasher.

XenoBitch · 02/01/2026 21:00

Are you going to be bringing your own plastic surgical instruments if you need an operation, too?

DeanElderberry · 02/01/2026 21:01

Anyone who puts their cutlery inside their mouth has such shockingly bad table manners that they should not be allowed out in public.

Minor exemption for small spoons used to eat mousse or similar.

Liverpool52 · 02/01/2026 21:01

What about eating at other people's houses? You have no idea how many others have also used that cutlery.

DarkEyedSailor · 02/01/2026 21:02

I've worked in kitchens almost non stop for 30 years and cutlery, and crockery, is all sterilised in a very hot dishwasher.

XenoBitch · 02/01/2026 21:02

I take it you never go to the dentists.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/01/2026 21:03

Soap and water - they are washed
and cleaned.

OonaStubbs · 02/01/2026 21:04

Why do people drink water? It has all been drunk by somebody else and been through their body and then pissed out into a toilet and then recycled. Disgusting!
