Why do we use cutlery in restaurants

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:48

I was thinking this recently

Those knives, forks and spoons have been INSIDE thousands of other people's mouths.

I was starting to get disgusted by the thought. I think it is such a weird practice.

I have now bought my own cheap plastic disposable cutlery, and bring it with me

Because they get washed at such a high temperature there is no risk of contamination. Do you take your own bedsheets and pillow cases to hotels? Or your own mattress? Also plastic disposables are shit for the planet.

Edited

Actually I do take my own pillow to hotels or BnBs. Because, unlike cutlery, pillows do not get washed that often. Think about it...

TeaAndTattoos · 02/01/2026 21:37

You do realise that they get put through a very very hot dishwasher I know because it use to be my job to wash all the dishes and they are hotter than hell coming back out.

Owly11 · 02/01/2026 21:37

I wouldn't risk eating out if i were you - just imagine the human hands that cooked your food, and where else those hands have been in respect of the human body to which they are attached that coughs, sneezes, shits and farts 😂

Ahh first only-on-Mumsnet thread of the year?

WarmGreyHare · 02/01/2026 21:38

Don't forget to bring your own classes and mugs too then. Peoples mouths have been right on them.

That’s why hotels and B&B’s pillows all have pillow protectors on which come off and get washed that’s easier than washing all the pillows.

They don't, though. Generally.

How do you put your mouth round classes asking for all the teachers on here 😂😂

What are you on about? I've worked in loads of food and beverage establishments in the last 30ish years and in every single one opening the dishwasher when it pipped at you nearly took your eyebrows off from the heat!

And if you then ended up having to polish the cutlery, you'd develop hands with the heat tolerance of asbestos (dunking the still hot, sanitised cutlery into a pot of just off the boil water and drying them with disposable napkins).

Eyeshadow · 02/01/2026 21:42

Nannyogganny · 02/01/2026 20:52

I disagree. I worked in some restaurants when I was younger.

In some of those restaurants. the cutlery got a very quick rinse in the sink

They weren't washed well.

You knew this and you’re only just started to get disgusted by it?

It is grim but then quite a lot of things are if you think about it too much.

I actually worry more about the people prepping the food.

I rarely go out to eat but when I do I don’t really think about it.

I think most places wash things correctly as if people regularly got ill from their establishment then they’d soon go out of business.

EdgeOfThirtySeven · 02/01/2026 21:39

Well you must be staying in some pretty cheap grotty places if they don’t have pillow protectors because everywhere I’ve stayed has them and they are all suppose to get washed.

Wasn’t actually asking you. If pillow cases and pillow protectors get changed regularly then how is it an issue? It’s not. People are a bit ridiculous. And maybe shouldn’t stay in grotty places!

Yes I am sure they are supposed to get washed...

You have no idea if the pillow protector has been washed.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/01/2026 21:45

I can’t imagine anyone called NannyOgg preferring plastic cutlery. Confused

Not to mention the water...

If you worked anywhere in hospitality the last 30 years you’ll know that dishwasher cleaning between services is required to meet inspection standards.

They get replaced quite regularly in the decent hotels though. No lumpy old pillows in decent places.

What's the connection between Islam and cheap plastic cutlery?

I have no idea. But they all use disposable rather than shared.

Good point.

I lost count of how many times I nearly lost my eyebrows to the steam and the heat that would come from the dishwasher when I opened it those things are lethal when they want to be. I’ve not worked in a restaurant kitchen for 10
years but you never forget the heat facial I got every time I opened it.

Ha ha ha. I worked in a pub for six years. Not once was our (bog standard domestic) dishwasher checked. We had a 5 star rating for hygiene from the FSA.

They didn't check our glass washer either.

You actually sit on public loo seats?! I thought everyone hovered (particularly given most seats seem to be covered in piss)

No only ignorant people hover. If you wipe the loo seat of any obvious remains and don't have any open weeping sores on your thighs, you cannot get any kind of infection through your skin in that context. You could just about manage to pick up a infection if you are flexible enough to lick your thighs afterwards like a cat can.
