I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't
.

I don't think it's about getting older and suddenly liking it I think it's a generation thing. I try to explain to my parents that it tastes better if it's not painful to drink and they just look blank.

Oddly enough, having been drinking coffee for decades longer than you have, they actually know what cooler coffee tastes like. And have decided that they prefer it hotter.

It was. I laughed. I'm suprised that it whooshed over so many heads!

Agree. I hope a few of the people on this thread have EpiPens, because they’re dangerously allergic to humour.

I don’t know. I also don't know why so many under 60’s like overpriced, faffy, lukewarm coffees, often from outlets.

One of the mysteries of life, I guess. 🤷‍♀️

Boododedoop · 29/12/2025 13:52

Anything I drink or eat has to be hot when it’s given to me or I serve myself with it but I’m happy to wait a minute or so before taking the first mouthful if I think it’s on the way too hot side of very hot. Im
late 60’s.

Not sure if I am boring, but i would love an objectionable pet . Can you signpost me to a specific rescue centre for unpleasant dogs ? .

I'm almost 62 and I have an objectionable pet in mn terms. She's a 55kg guarding breed dog. I'm also childless and autistic with hair down to my arse, am a vegetarian and I don't have a loo brush. I'm a whole mumsnet batshit bingo card ticked in one fell swoop 😁

Except I don't drink coffee, scorching hot or otherwise... Damn!

GrannyGoggles · 29/12/2025 14:00

@Missmarplesknittingbuddy @5128gap Take yourself to any dog rescue/ rehoming centre. You will find an abundance of potentially objectionable dogs. If they are not already objectionable it will require v little effort on your part to render them so.

Over 60 here. Like my coffee v hot. Have no pets, disagreeable or otherwise. Don’t talk v much at all, which may or may not qualify as dull

dottiedodah · 29/12/2025 14:00

Early 60s here! I only drink tea and it is weak /moderately hot.On a serious note I thought very hot liquid wasnt good? Can it damage the oesophugus or something

I have one you are welcome to. His arse is objectionable in its own right. He can clear a room in a single fart. We once got a call from an offensive weapons design company to come study him for inspiration into crowd dispersal/control measures.

He is also 13, grumpy and has perfected the judgmental side eye.

I will feed him Brussel sprouts and tie him to a lamppost in the opposite wind direction to his rear...... for you to come and collect him.

(JK of course. He is all mine, and I love the bones of him, and I will fight to the death if anyone even looks at him sideways.

I am on the slippery slope to 60, can't stand coffee, hot or otherwise. I am a fan of tea with THREE, yes THREE, sugars, which people always feel the need to comment on as if I was advocating stoning children in the street.

I hardly dare post this, but, I once had a rescue dog that was very objectionable indeed. And I was only in my 40s at the time. I got away with it by using a fake ID and saying I lived a healthy life and had good genes and a lot of botox.

saraclara · 29/12/2025 14:16

Anyway, I'm a decade past 60 and drink my coffee at the right temperature (for me) straight out of my Aeropress or the coffee machine at whatever coffee place I go to.

HoppityBun · 29/12/2025 12:19

I once asked for an Americano with hot milk and the barista kept asking me if I wanted it black or white? I didn’t understand the question. So I kept asking for an Americano with hot milk but after a stalemate, I ended up saying to give me an Americano, which is black, then add hot milk, so it becomes white.

A white americano is always meant to be made with hot milk. They’re confused because you’re specifying the method that is already used (or should be) so it sounds like you’re asking for two drinks - an americano and a hot milk. So they’re asking what kind of americano.

I hate it with hot milk. Hot milk always looks a bit off to me and doesn't have the cooling effect I'm after.

Then get a black americano and add the cold milk in the jugs on the side

I do. I've never been anywhere that made an Americano and added the milk for you whether hot or cold. It comes in a separate jug but you still have to specify the temperature. Some places have cold milk available on the side, nobody has hot milk available so you have to request it if you want it.

If I'm out with my mum I have to order two Americani, one with hot milk and one with cold which is two coffees and two small jugs of milk.

Myoldbear · 29/12/2025 14:29

Thinking about it, coffee used to get skin on it as it cooled.

Doesn't happen so much these days with milk being agitated more often.

I used to hate it as the skin of the milk stuck on to my top lip, or worse when I swallowed it - disgusting!

Could that be relevant to coffee temperature preference now and in the past?

OnGoldenPond · 29/12/2025 14:30

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 29/12/2025 09:34

My parents (late 70s/early 80s) always have really hot coffee. They order it extra hot in coffee shops and are really cross if it isn’t exactly that, extra hot. Same with soup.
I think it also has something to do with them wanting to have longer sit downs and to be able to drink the coffee from the start of the sit down to nearly the end.

DS has worked in several cafes/ private clubs and has been trained as a barista. It really infuriates him when people insist he makes the coffee “extra hot “ as he knows this burns the freshly ground coffee and makes it taste awful. They then complain that the coffee doesn’t taste right!

I definitely prefer my coffee lukewarm as you can then actually taste it, and I am close to the vintage specified by the OP Smile

SilverGlitterBaubles · 29/12/2025 14:31

I’m under 60 and have always liked my hot drinks hot. Nothing worse than a coffee that is served lukewarm and gets is cold by the time you are two sips through. I now ask for my drinks to be extra hot which still means not boiling just not cold. If I want an iced late I will ask for one.

TidyCyan · 29/12/2025 14:32

My mum and dad are in their 70s and like it hot. It's due to growing up and early adulthood drinking hot instant with a splash of milk, not a latte that's half-milk.

RaraRachael · 29/12/2025 14:37

I'm over 60 and am so fed up of being served lukewarm coffees and meals.

I don't know if this is some new health and safety stuff but I've only been aware of it in the last few years.

@GrannyGoggles Don’t be so silly. You don’t need to go anywhere, @Missmarplesknittingbuddy and @5128gap. The government will issue you your objectionable pet when you get your OAP bus pass. They may be delivered in the same package, so open any parcels promptly, in order to ensure your objectionable pet doesn’t eat your bus pass. Oh. You’ll also receive your free pamphlet on how to be more dull.

Yep. I always ask for an Americano with cold milk on the side. I dislike hot milk being added to an Americano. It makes it too hot, and changes the flavour of the coffee considerably.

Have you seen Kris Jenner’s new face? Her surgeon genuinely made her look like a cross between her two daughters in their 40s; it’s pretty fascinating and wouldn’t have been possible maybe even five years ago, definitely not 10.So maybe soon, we’ll be able to get objectionable pets, hot coffee, large coats, and bobble hats at any age, and just claim we’re OAPs that had the Kris Jenner special.

I can see that causing much confusion. Imagine accidently patronising or sneering at a person and then finding out they were actually under 60, or worse still, inadvertently affording them respect, maybe even befriending them, then finding out they were over 60?
I'd not be able to live with myself.

Charming.
we grew up in cold houses where it was important to heat the food and heat the plates. We like our food hot. Who wants to eat a cool dinner?

Surely it's entirely up to the person eating it
