To ask if you know anyone over 60 who doesn't insist on their coffee being hotter than the sun

I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't
.

OP posts:
EleanorReally · 29/12/2025 09:47

however dh is over 60 as well and makes his coffee last hours!
eergh

Funderthighs · 29/12/2025 09:48

I work in a coffee shop and 95% of customers of any age, ask for an extra hot coffee. It’s definitely not an age thing.

RandomUsernameHere · 29/12/2025 09:48

I’ve never made coffee for an over 60 year old and been told it’s not hot enough, although MiL does sometimes ask for warm milk in it instead of cold so maybe that’s why!

RampantIvy · 29/12/2025 09:45

Why did you write this?

Because stereotypes about people based on age are daft. Always something on here about what older people do and don't do. The hot drink thing is harmless enough, but the idea of categorising people based on their age in general, is not.

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 29/12/2025 09:49

You are absolutely right.
It is a crass generalisation, and ageist.

BioBay · 29/12/2025 09:49

Haha this made me laugh. But no, my parents (especially my mum) have it scolding hot. If they make me a coffee they are genuinely perplexed that I need to wait about ten mins for it to cool down.

MathsandStats · 29/12/2025 09:50

Pavementworrier · 29/12/2025 09:43

Yes, explaining how best to experience something is fairly normal.

No, that's being really patronising. Just because you experience it better your way doesn't mean others do. You prioritise taste, others prioritise temperature.

IllAdvised · 29/12/2025 09:50

5128gap · 29/12/2025 09:33

No idea. Wouldn't dream of socialising with someone over 60. I've tried it with one or two of them. One had very dull conversation and the other had an unpleasant dog. So naturally I've concluded that every single person in this age group will be boring with an objectionable pet.

Yes, and a tendency to spit spouts of boiling coffee at passersby, if irritated. A bad lot in general.

Overalls · 29/12/2025 09:51

Pavementworrier · 29/12/2025 09:43

Yes, explaining how best to experience something is fairly normal.

Don't you think though that after a lifetime of experiencing hot and cooler coffee they've already done the leg work and decided how they like it?

Nos4r2 · 29/12/2025 09:52

Why does it matter. What a stupid thread. You could easily say as snobbery as the OP. Why does everyone understand 60 drink tepid coffee.?
Yet another I will never be old thread.

Sahara123 · 29/12/2025 09:53

Me! I’m over 60 and prefer tea, coffee , food even which isn’t scalding hot. It taste better. After Christmas I am quite partial to a leftover cold sprout !
Someone mentioned one of those boiling water tap things, for me it’s not that it’s not hot enough, more that tea tastes somehow different from one. A kind of weird scum almost ? Although to be fair I’ve not experienced one for a few years, maybe they’ve got better .

Chemenger · 29/12/2025 09:54

Me. I’m over 60 and drink hotish but not extra hot coffee. If I get a coffee in a cafe I have to let it cool for a while. On the other hand I can’t drink cold coffee, so there is a narrow window where it is cool enough to drink but not cold. I drink mint tea most of the time, because I’ll happily drink that cold. I don’t understand how people drink very hot drinks without burning their mouths.

Anewuser · 29/12/2025 09:56

randomchap · 29/12/2025 09:26

My mum

She likes it about 40% milk from the fridge so she can drink it immediately

But never drinks the last mouthful annoyingly

I never drink the last monthful either. That’s a habit of growing up when we used loose tea. The last mouthful was full of gruts.

SomethingRattling · 29/12/2025 09:56

Why did you write this?

It's a joke, and funny when you read it as one. I blinked and then laughed.

XWKD · 29/12/2025 09:56

I don't care about coffee, which I don't drink very often anyway, but the first sip from a cup of tea has to be really hot.

I toughen up my mouth with gin. It's like rubbing alcohol. 😉

Happyher · 29/12/2025 09:58

I’m 67 and I have about 1/3 milk in. I hate scalding hot drinks

thereare4lights · 29/12/2025 09:58

I'm a few years off 60, but currently missing a layer of skin from the roof of my mouth from yesterday's coffee. It 'may' have been too hot. Can't stand lukewarm drinks.

nondrinker1985 · 29/12/2025 09:58

oh I’m 40 and love my coffee hot!

5128gap · 29/12/2025 09:59

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 29/12/2025 09:37

Not sure if I am boring, but i would love an objectionable pet . Can you signpost me to a specific rescue centre for unpleasant dogs ? .

Sadly not. I have another 4 years before I reach the age of entitlement to one, so I haven't yet done my research.

CalzoneOnLegs · 29/12/2025 10:00

But surely that’s instant ‘coffee’ that’s made with boiling water?

RampantIvy · 29/12/2025 10:00

SomethingRattling · 29/12/2025 09:56

Blush I didn't get it. Oops.

Buttcraic · 29/12/2025 09:32

39 here and my coffee has to be hotttt, its gross as soon as it starts to cool.

Yeap, 41, if I am not having iced coffee, my coffee better not be less than hot as hell when I get it. Tooooo hot, then surely I can wait, but if I can drink a mouthful on the first sip it's a fail.

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 10:01

It has taken me years to train my mum so she remembers if we order coffee in a cafe and I need to then go to the loo not to put the saucer on top of it to trap the heat as I would prefer it has a chance to cool down. And I can then add cold milk.

I remember to put the saucer on top for her if she needs to go elsewhere.

If I'm with MIL I've usually barely been able to start mine, with added cold milk, and she's finished her black one. DH is somewhere in the middle.

A standard Americano with cold milk is still perfectly palatable to me up to half an hour.

randomchap · 29/12/2025 09:26

My mum

She likes it about 40% milk from the fridge so she can drink it immediately

But never drinks the last mouthful annoyingly

I have to make myself drink the last mouthful. It's a hangover from when my Mum made tea with loose leaves; you always got a few in the bottom of the cup, so I got into the habit of leaving the dregs.

Chemenger · 29/12/2025 10:02

Drink boiling hot coffee might account for why my FIL cannot eat anything that isn’t 30% salt. He’s burnt off all his tastebuds.
