I know this is a crass generalisation but I actually don't

My mum

She likes it about 40% milk from the fridge so she can drink it immediately

But never drinks the last mouthful annoyingly

Myoldbear · 29/12/2025 09:28

I'm over 60 and most things (food and tea,) I do like to be really hot.
Funnily enough, coffee is the one thing I don't mind being lukewarm ( but do prefer hot.)

I have always been like this though, nothing to do with being over 60.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 29/12/2025 09:28

😆 My DH. (Just past 60.) Has to be 100% boiling water. I prefer mine hot but not boiling. (I'm not far off 60, so I may want it hotter soon!) 😆

ManyPigeons · 29/12/2025 09:28

Nope. All those I know wish to be scalded by the heat.

Pavementworrier · 29/12/2025 09:31

I don't think it's about getting older and suddenly liking it I think it's a generation thing. I try to explain to my parents that it tastes better if it's not painful to drink and they just look blank.

Hate boiling coffee.

im 62

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 29/12/2025 09:32

I am over 60 and if it doesn't strip the skin from the roof of my mouth it needs reheating . When my DCs serve me nasty tepid liquid it goes straight into the microwave . 😀

Buttcraic · 29/12/2025 09:32

39 here and my coffee has to be hotttt, its gross as soon as it starts to cool.

5128gap · 29/12/2025 09:33

No idea. Wouldn't dream of socialising with someone over 60. I've tried it with one or two of them. One had very dull conversation and the other had an unpleasant dog. So naturally I've concluded that every single person in this age group will be boring with an objectionable pet.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 29/12/2025 09:34

My parents (late 70s/early 80s) always have really hot coffee. They order it extra hot in coffee shops and are really cross if it isn’t exactly that, extra hot. Same with soup.
I think it also has something to do with them wanting to have longer sit downs and to be able to drink the coffee from the start of the sit down to nearly the end.

HoppityBun · 29/12/2025 09:35

Well, there’s me, for a start. But I’ve found that by a quirk of physics, it cools down.

Coffee shouldn't be made with boiling water anyway. I always let the water cool a little when I make it, but I dislike lukewarm drinks. I like both my tea and coffee to be hot rather than warm, but not at the expense of taste.

Not sure if I am boring, but i would love an objectionable pet . Can you signpost me to a specific rescue centre for unpleasant dogs ? .

ElinoristhenewEnid · 29/12/2025 09:38

Hot drinks should be HOT not warm or tepid. Cannot bear drinks that are not hot when you are served them. I am mid 60s.

TutTutTutSigh · 29/12/2025 09:38

My mum, I'll make her a coffee with scalding hot milk and she'll put it straight into the microwave..

caramac04 · 29/12/2025 09:39

Me! I boil my kettle to 80’ for coffee if I’m having instant as you’re not supposed to scald the coffee.
Any baristas here to explain why ‘proper’ coffee is hotter? I mean generally not the extra hot.
My coffee machine definitely makes it hotter than 80 but I’m not convinced it’s boiling.
I wonder if that’s to do with the pressure the water is pushed through the coffee.

@Pavementworrier

"tastes better if it's not painful to drink..."

Where's the pleasure in that?
I wear sackcloth and ashes to drink my v. hot coffee. An option I wish Costa and Starbucks would introduce rather than mucking about with banana, wontang berry flavours and the like.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 29/12/2025 09:41

You try to explain to them what tastes better in their mouths?

Okay …

Yes, explaining how best to experience something is fairly normal.

Me. I'm over 60 and never have my coffee hot. Never have. Not a great coffee drinker, however.

Why did you write this?

DarkEyedSailor · 29/12/2025 09:46

My parents (70s) both like their tea pale and wishy-washy and lukewarm.
I (40s) like it scalding.

EleanorReally · 29/12/2025 09:47

dd makes coffee in a pot and i turn it down, as by the time it is brewed it is cold, to my palate anyway

GreywackeJ · 29/12/2025 09:47

We’re not over 60, but at least 3 of my friends are obsessed with the temperature of coffee. I guarantee any occasion will be mostly filled with them fretting it’s not hot enough.

We have a boiling water tap, but they don’t consider that water hot enough for tea.

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 29/12/2025 09:47

My husband! He's 64. I'm in my 50s and I drink it scalding hot. If we have a coffee while we're out I've normally finished mine before he's even started his, waiting for it to cool down.
