I found a wallet

Tonight I found a wallet. Lots of cards, and some cash. I was delighted. But still proceeded to see a driving licence, clearly he has dropped the wallet outside his house. I knocked on the door, I ask if Raj lives there. She said yes, I said I found his wallet. She says she's on the phone to him, I see the name on the phone. She seems happy but no offer of a reward.

I go home, knowing I did the right thing. I have money in my bank account, I can pay tomorrow's bills.

Aibu for giving back the wallet?

People say I should have taken the cash.

Why are you even thinking this? Of course you shouldn’t have taken the cash.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 27/12/2025 00:20

Jesus no. You absolutely should not have taken the cash. If you had you wouldn't have returned the wallet either. You made someone happy and gave them faith in the kindness of others. That's better than some money surely. Whoever told you they would take the cash is someone I would think less of if I were you.

Jeschara · 27/12/2025 00:21

The people who told you to take the cash are bloody thieves. Ignore them. You also need better friends.

bonnymiffy · 27/12/2025 00:22

Why do you need a reward? You would have taken the cash that wasn’t yours, even though, as you’ve said you found it outside the owner’s house, the person you handed it to would have known it was you who took it? Good grief. What sort of world do we like in where people can’t just do the right thing and leave it at that??

I guess it was the lady at the door don't seem too bothered but English wasn't her first language

Of course you did the right thing.
Do you really need to ask ?

Catholica · 27/12/2025 00:22

How is this even a question?

Seacatt · 27/12/2025 00:23

I woudn't think of taking the cash.

Dazzlemered · 27/12/2025 00:23

A reward for what?

Being a decent human being?

SweeetFannyAdams · 27/12/2025 00:24

Good lord there are some very bored people around today.

TheSmallAssassin · 27/12/2025 00:24

You didn't even have to make any effort to return it, if it was right outside the house, so not sure what you think the reward would be for?

Joeninety · 27/12/2025 00:24

Suppose it depends on how much was in there.

Wreckinball · 27/12/2025 00:24

Where has the humanity gone?

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:25

Wreckinball · 27/12/2025 00:24

Where has the humanity gone?

People are dying in Gaza. Why are you comparing a wallet to humanity

Wingedharpy · 27/12/2025 00:26

Raj will be delighted to get his wallet and cash back.
That's a reward in itself.
You absolutely did the right thing.

Okiedokie123 · 27/12/2025 00:27

Is stealing something you do on a regular basis?

ChilliMochaCoco · 27/12/2025 00:28

You did a good thing OP. You reap what you sow. Kindness will follow you. Don't question what you did by the reaction of others. You did the right thing

Thank you.

I actually found a wallet when I was a student, I had no money but was waiting for pay day and had enough to get by.

Ended up with unexpected money from a hardship grant at uni (that had money left over). Was great

Yes! I think his wife's reaction was underwhelming

Yes all the time. Forever finding wallets in the street. Money is just everywhere. Probably will find one tomorrow as well

Weird you would do that

OP posts:
Isittimeformynapyet · 27/12/2025 00:31

This is an unbelievably stupid question. I should think most of those YABU votes are for the fact that this thread exists, not that you should have kept the pretend money.

ncduetooutingsituation · 27/12/2025 00:31

I’m not sure why the situation in Gaza suggests that you should get cash for finding someone else’s wallet.
Can you please explain?
