I found a wallet

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:16

Tonight I found a wallet. Lots of cards, and some cash. I was delighted. But still proceeded to see a driving licence, clearly he has dropped the wallet outside his house. I knocked on the door, I ask if Raj lives there. She said yes, I said I found his wallet. She says she's on the phone to him, I see the name on the phone. She seems happy but no offer of a reward.

I go home, knowing I did the right thing. I have money in my bank account, I can pay tomorrow's bills.

Aibu for giving back the wallet?

People say I should have taken the cash.

Lost for words and shocked that 54% think you are not AIBU to keep the cash in the wallet. It is not yours to keep!

Just common decency to return to finder.

Why are you asking for applause fgs?

Igneococcus · 27/12/2025 08:09

English isn't my first language either but even I know that the word for a person who takes money that isn't theirs is "thief". I'd rethink some of those friendships if I were you.

I think people will be misunderstanding the question. There’s no way the results would be that.

This seems like a wind up anyway. Am I unreasonable for not stealing? WTAF?

She didn't ask any questions which I found weird.

Do you have main character syndrome?

IstillloveKingThistle · 27/12/2025 08:12

KimberleyClark · 27/12/2025 00:19

Why are you even thinking this? Of course you shouldn’t have taken the cash.

Exactly this . None of the contents of the wallet were yours to keep .

aphroditeflighty · 27/12/2025 08:19

You can't always expect gratitude for doing the right thing. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/12/2025 08:24

7 year old DS found a purse in the summer. We left a note where it had been left in case the owner came back. Then we went through the cards and tried tracking down the owner. In the end I think we contacted her via her trade union. She did say thank you, just about, but was stressed and harassed at having lost it.

Put your phone number in your wallet!!

YellowPixie · 27/12/2025 08:24

I found a wallet lying in the middle of the road just round the corner from my house, it had been dropped or fallen out of the pocket of someone getting out of their car. I looked in it for an address and the first thing I saw was a driving licence - it didn't even occur to me to look for money.

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 27/12/2025 08:24

I found one once at a tourist site in the UK - full of cards and foreign bank notes. It was sitting on the cistern of a toilet. I handed it in to the reception desk. I liked to think of the tourist fearing their holiday would suddenly turn into a nightmare of card cancelling and trying to get hold of more cash in a foreign country heaving a huge sigh of relief when it turned up!

My husband lost his a few years ago in a pub, and it was found and handed into the bar. It had had £10 or so in it which was gone but his cards and driving licence were still there. I guess the finder had had the OP's mindset about the cash, but still, we were glad to get it back.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/12/2025 08:25

When my ds was about 13 he found a wallet in the local churchyard. It contained a lot of cash, credit cards, driving licence. Belonged to a woman who worked at a local school. I rang, she came to my house collected didn't say thank you to my DS or me, which I did think was rude. Another time he found a watch,we took it to the local police station,it was never claimed. We found a watch on Brighton beach,he put it on his wrist,we were going to take it to the police station, I got a call to say DH was rushed to hospital. We went to the police station later, and they took the watch off him, accused him of theft, were extremely nasty. Apparently it was a very expensive model. Never heard anything.

This is laughable. Can’t believe people are even commenting. There are some pretty bonkers OPs out there..

Agreed, this is someone just having a laugh at everyone else's expense and watching them become outraged at the lack of morality..

Katemax82 · 27/12/2025 08:28

A lady found my purse and drove it 10 miles to the nearest police station. I sent her a 30 quid bunch of flowers

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 27/12/2025 08:30

His wife sounds rude, i wouldn't expect a reward but a thankyou would have been nice, which is probably why you're questioning your actions.
It was still the right thing to do & you are a good person for doing it.

MissMoneyFairy · 27/12/2025 08:30

Why have you bothered posting this absolute garbage, are you really bored today

PauliesWalnuts · 27/12/2025 08:32

Because taking the cash would be stealing. Do you want a reward just for not stealing it or something?

feelingfree17 · 27/12/2025 08:33

How would you feel if you lost your purse. It was returned to you minus your hard earned cash?
Why would you even consider taking something that isn’t yours?
Always do the decent thing and return just as it was left. Just knowing of the joy and relief from the person who has lost it, is the biggest reward.

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 27/12/2025 08:34

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:30

Yes! I think his wife's reaction was underwhelming

Let's imagine you were standing in a shop and dropped your own wallet. The person behind you picks it up and hands it to you.

Do you think they would expect a reward?

How would you feel if they took out some cash before handing it back to you?

How would you feel if they had taken out some cash before handing it to a member of staff for logging as lost property or before dropping it off at a police station.

"People say I should have taken the cash."

The people you know are dishonest. You need to find better people.

If you know you did the right thing, why bother starting a thread about it?

Do you want praise?

If you know you did the right thing you know that the responses from your "people" are wrong.

So what is the point of your thread?

Idontknowwhy15 · 27/12/2025 08:35

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:46

How would it be returned to the owner?

DH works as civilian staff in a police station and he quite enjoys tracking down owners of lost wallets. They don’t usually just dump them in lost property, if there is a name in the wallet they’ll do their best to get in touch.

CuriousKangaroo · 27/12/2025 08:37

Is this real? You found a wallet outside a house and walked a few steps to return it and you’re disappointed because you expected a reward and some over the top display of gratitude for not stealing?

Seriously, how selfish have people become for expecting so much for an act of basic decency?

jasflowers · 27/12/2025 08:38

The money may have been vital for them, it wasn't for you.

If you lost a wallet, would you like it returned in full or minus any cash?

I recently found a phone on the road in Mallorca, it had 100 euros inside the case, the phone rang and somehow, despite neither of us speaking the others language, we managed to meet up and she was so pleased to get back the phone, showing me all the photos of her kids on it.

Reward in itself.

JamesClyman · 27/12/2025 08:39

People say I should have taken the cash.

You need to start hanging out with a better class of person.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 27/12/2025 08:39

He dropped the wallet outside his house so you went to absolutely no effort to return it. Why do you want a reward? For not being a thief even though you were obviously tempted? I cant believe this is how some people think ( greedy and grabby)

Dery · 27/12/2025 08:46

Who says you should have taken the cash!?!? That would be a crime and make you a thief. It would be such a wrong thing to do.

Greyhound98 · 27/12/2025 08:49

Which ‘people’ are saying you should have kept the cash?
Those who are thieves?
