I found a wallet

Tonight I found a wallet. Lots of cards, and some cash. I was delighted. But still proceeded to see a driving licence, clearly he has dropped the wallet outside his house. I knocked on the door, I ask if Raj lives there. She said yes, I said I found his wallet. She says she's on the phone to him, I see the name on the phone. She seems happy but no offer of a reward.

I go home, knowing I did the right thing. I have money in my bank account, I can pay tomorrow's bills.

Aibu for giving back the wallet?

People say I should have taken the cash.

OP posts:

No @Roobarbtwo people are thinking op is unreasonable, for expecting a reward, saying that they were thinking of taking the money out of this wallet, that was found outside the person’s house!!!
It’s just bizarre, that someone would start a thread, whinging about not getting a reward and that they regret not stealing the money out of this wallet!!

Roobarbtwo · 27/12/2025 01:58

I'm astonished that people on here seem to be suggesting that the OP was unreasonable for giving back the wallet. Do people have no morals?

I think they were voting that the OP was unreasonable to consider not returning the wallet.

Justchilling07 · 27/12/2025 02:14

@Oneforallandallforone Exactly.

Anywherebuthere · 27/12/2025 02:34

Who are these people who think you should have taken the cash?
Why should you get a reward for returning something to its rightful owner?

Soashamed60 · 27/12/2025 02:40

Of course you should have handed it in. It's the only thing to do. Apart from it being the right thing to do, door cameras can pick up people going past the house. Imagine ths shame of being caught on camera picking the wallet up and just walking off

ItsNotMeEither · 27/12/2025 02:53

People are telling you you should have stolen the cash. Who the hell are these people? Relatives? Friends?

It sounds like you're hanging out with people who have low moral standards. Never trust them!

Would it have been nice to have received a heartfelt thankyou? Sure, but surely that's not why you returned it. Returning a wallet, when you're standing outside the house is a pretty basic level of being a decent human being. As for the wife, maybe she didn't know he had cash this time. My DH rarely ever has cash, you could probably almost guarantee that if he lost his wallet, it would be on a day he finally had cash. Chances are, the owner of the wallet had already cancelled or put a hold on his cards.

Terrytheweasel · 27/12/2025 03:09

It’s a non event, like someone leaving their keys in the door and knocking to let then know. It wouldn’t even enter my head to take money and I’d only look inside to work out who it belonged to.
I’ve found all sorts over the years and have always reunited it with the owners. I’ve also lost phones and purses myself. Once my lost purse was returned without the cash inside and I did think that the person who found it took it.

HotWaterHotel · 27/12/2025 00:52

Really? Were you unreasonable to not steal someone’s money?
Had it been your wallet and someone stole your money, I am sure you would think they were very unreasonable.
I worked with a woman who found a purse with £200 in it and was very excitedly suggesting she keep it. There was a hotel room key in it so I marched her to the hotel to return it, including the cash. Didn’t leave my bag in the office if I nipped to the kitchen or loo after that, in case she stole from it.

Marched?

Oneforallandallforone · 27/12/2025 01:19

I voted YABU as I interpreted the poll as you are being unreasonable to consider not handing the wallet back.

But the whole post seems unbelieveable. How did you know that the person who dropped the wallet lived in the house just because you saw a driving licence? Presumably you aren't neighbours or you'd have known their names? If you dont' know neighbours, then the wallet could have belonged to any house.

Driving licences have your home address printed on the front 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Topsy1976 · 27/12/2025 05:38

WTF is wrong with you that you aren’t sure if you should have taken money out of someone’s wallet?!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 27/12/2025 05:43

You need a reward for not stealing? I can’t believe this would cross your mind.

Rozendantz · 27/12/2025 05:47

24kPalamino · 27/12/2025 00:40

I found a wallet that contained over £400 about ten years ago. I was broke. But I would never have even thought to take the money. I handed it in at the police station and never even considered a reward. In fact I never heard about it again. I like to think that the wallet was reunited with its owner and they were relieved to have all of their money back.

The fact that you never heard back suggests it was claimed by the person who lost it Smile

Last year I found £60. I handed it in at the police station (after posting on social media, with no success); the police took my details, and a month later turned up to give it back to me as it had never been claimed...

Op, of course you should have returned the wallet, it's the right thing to do!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 27/12/2025 05:51

I found £20 in Morrisons. Handed it in with my phone number just in case. It was a lesson for my son who was with me. I told him it could be the only money someone has. A few weeks later we got a call to say it was never claimed and my son got to spend it. He remembers it clearly as he was shocked he wasn’t allowed to pocket it at the time of finding it.

ThePerfectWeekend · 27/12/2025 05:51

You need better friends, one with a moral compass.

XWKD · 27/12/2025 05:53

Why did you expect a reward?

23doorsdown · 27/12/2025 05:57

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:25

People are dying in Gaza. Why are you comparing a wallet to humanity

So why so fussed about the women’s response to you handing back the wallet?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 27/12/2025 06:02

Id like to know why you were delighted to find it?

Isthisit2025 · 27/12/2025 06:03

This is laughable. Can’t believe people are even commenting. There are some pretty bonkers OPs out there..

ilovesooty · 27/12/2025 06:15

You said the person who'd lost the wallet was already on the phone to the woman. The woman probably didn't say a lot to you because she was dealing with his distress at having lost it. It probably wasn't to do with English not being her first language.

You seem to be exhibiting an undertone of racism as well as dishonesty.

I'm actually rather heartened by the responses you've received on the thread.

LamettaTime · 27/12/2025 06:29

I was delighted when I found a wallet in the supermarket the other day - because I’m an honest person and took it straight to customer services to hand it in without even opening it. Other people might have found it and kept it. Like OP wanted to.

It doesn’t matter if nobody falls over themselves to shake you by the hand and thank you. You still do the right thing.

HerNeighbourTotoro · 27/12/2025 06:31

tonightceilaimgoingtobe · 27/12/2025 00:22

I guess it was the lady at the door don't seem too bothered but English wasn't her first language

What the heck does English not being her first language to do with anything???
Maybe she wasnt bothered because she expected people to be decent, or she was preoccupied with something else. She was on the phone with him and he may have been stressed about the wallet, so not like she had time to sort out your 'reward' for doing what you should have done anyways.

Passaggressfedup · 27/12/2025 06:32

So you are disappointed you didn't get an ovation for being just an outstanding citizen. What a horrible woman not to co granulated you for battling your instinct to keep the cash and instead do just what anyone should do, not steal!

From your OP, you acknowledge stealing was your initial thought, you changed your mind when you realise the person lived right there and so it was easy to return....or that they might have a ring door bell and have a video of you picking it up.

Frankly, if you believe you are a samaritan who deserves a pat on the back, I can suggest a New Year's resolution: ditch the friends who would have stole the wallet (and potentially ended up with a criminal record), and meet new people who value honesty as a basic quality.

hattie43 · 27/12/2025 06:33

Jeschara · 27/12/2025 00:21

The people who told you to take the cash are bloody thieves. Ignore them. You also need better friends.

This . Imagine if it was you who lost your wallet .

Weird you would do that

Weird that YOU expect a reward or praise for being a moral human being

You need therapy
