Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

You sound very needy.

Yes, you do, OP. Being alone for the afternoon is the perfect opportunity to do something of your own choice, and be master of your own time! I've been at a football match this afternoon myself, but if my husband hadn't wanted to come, he would have no problem being at home doing his own thing.

There is no city in England that is "an absolute scary shit hole", FFS.
You could have hitched a lift and enjoyed a nice day out, but you were determined to be a pathetic martyr talking about "abandonment".

And even if your partner had stayed home, would you have spent the whole day together making sparkling conversation? I think not.....

Agreed! Curious as to where this ‘absolute scary shit hole’ actually is 😂

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/12/2025 18:06

So has his entire family gone or could he have taken you and you spent the day with one of your inlaws where he picked someone up. Then he could have got you on the way back.

Wolfpa · 26/12/2025 18:06

Boxing Day football is a tradition here either going in person or watching on TV. I am intrigued about what UK city is so bad you can’t spend a couple of hours entertaining yourself.

make some of your own plans next year there will be loads to do if you look

JackGrealishsCalves · 26/12/2025 18:06

Who does he support out of interest?

BeeHive909 · 26/12/2025 18:06

Yep, my partner does and he’s going to our teams game tonight ar home, I’m using the time to have a lovely soak in the bath and some nice food. I love that he has a hobby and uses his time

I was the one with a season ticket and would have zero problems leaving my partner alone for hours to go to a Boxing Day game. Partner gets some alone time plus, not a chance I'm missing that atmosphere !

Me too. Season ticket holder with Sunderland, we have no game today but last Boxing Day DS and I went to watch them play away at Blackburn and had a lovely day!
DP is a Newcastle fan 🤣 so we will be watching their game tonight on TV

my DP went shooting all day with the dog and I had a nice day without him!

Peccary · 26/12/2025 18:08

Don't mind at all, fallen nicely for us today as his team is playing this evening so we have had a nice day as a family anyway

Boxing Day football has been the highlight of the football calendar since time immortal.
I assume he had a ST when you met him? They are so bloody expensive now I wouldn't want to miss a single match unless my leg was hanging off.
So yes YABU, very! You're not joined at the hip

Well since 1860 when 2 Sheffield teams played the first boxing day match 😉

Hobnobswantshernameback · 26/12/2025 18:09

I too am intensely curious where the "scary shithole" is

Maybe it’s a social class thing, I grew up with christmas being about family. Not sport.

A social class thing!!

what class are you?

absolutely normal for football on Boxing Day and prepare yourself for new year as well.

Oh gosh, that must get interesting. My best friend is a Boro season ticket holder so is distasteful of both but prefers a Mackem. 😂

CoralOP · 26/12/2025 18:10

Why do you keep going on about growing up with family that didn't watch football. You have grown up children so you have lived a lot of Christmas's and are old enough to know that your childhood Christmas expectations don't go on and on and on, life changes and adapts.
It's REALLY not a big deal and I feel sorry for your husband when he has to return to your mood.

Partner has driven a few hours and is in England.

Interesting… you said that you lived near the Munros… none of which are within “a couple of hours” of England.

Apparently every family member ever added to the OP's nuclear family since 1950 goes to one house for Christmas, but her DP's cousins's aren't family.

Harrumphhhh · 26/12/2025 18:13

Anyone else looking at today’s fixture list trying to work out which match is being played at a ‘scary shithole’ in England, but within two hour’s drive of a Munro?

HoobleDooble · 26/12/2025 18:14

My DH has had a season ticket since he was a kid. I used to be a bit “grrrr!” about it when DS was little so he used to drop him off with grandma and give me a relaxing day to myself. They played at home today so I lay on the bed reading my book and teenage DS played with his friends via Xbox. He will be going on NYD when they’re at home though … only downside being I don’t get a cup of tea brought to me at halftime.

Exactly what I came on to say ! I think the nearest Munro to the border would be Ben Lomond which is about 4 hours from ( eg) Newcastle .

I wondered maybe Middlesbrough as they are top 2 at the moment and it's sort-of close but it's not a scary shit hole or a city.

My money’s on Luton

sweeneytoddsrazor · 26/12/2025 18:19

I thought it would have to be Middlesbrough as well. Basing that geographically rather than saying its a scary shithole. I haven't been there for a few years but pretty certain it isn't a scary place

PurpleThistle7 · 26/12/2025 18:20

This is so dramatic. You have many other days you can spend together, this is just one day. I think a day to myself sounds blissful! And even if it’s not, sounds like he has developed a lovely tradition seeing people he doesn’t see often and enjoying watching something he likes. I hope he has a wonderful day.

Whatever you were so keen to do together, just do that? Watch a film? Have a long bath? Read a book?

I'm hazarding a guess at Middlesbrough 😁 I see a few have beaten me to it.
