Would they go on Boxing Day and leave you home alone all day?
Just wondering if I’m being unreasonable because football bores me rigid and I can’t imagine leaving my partner of 6 years alone on Boxing Day.

Currently sitting in on my home whilst OH and 2 adult sons at the football.
It slightly hacks me off that the assume it is OK and is "tradition", but I'm not that bothered really. It also happens every New Year's Day.

mynameiscalypso · 26/12/2025 16:36

We were hosting today so not football here but I know my dad went out to see his local team play (not even a team he supports), leaving my mum at home alone this afternoon. They seemed perfectly happy with that arrangement!

blankcanvas3 · 26/12/2025 16:36

Yes he does go every year. Not today though cos they’re not playing until tomorrow! I don’t mind or care, he pulls his weight the rest of the time so who am I to deny him a couple of hours doing what he loves most.

Yes, they have done. I usually book a treat for my daughter and myself. Or just enjoy the peace.

This year they are actually playing on the 27th, so we are all going.

RenoDakota · 26/12/2025 16:38

Mine, a season ticket holder, is out at the match at the moment. I have had a blissful afternoon on my own, napping then reading a book.

Netcurtainnelly · 26/12/2025 16:39

Boxing day sport is traditional yabu.

TidyCyan · 26/12/2025 16:43

Can I just say it's nice to have a football thread without pages of "Ugh, overpaid idiots kicking a ball/why are they paid more than nurses/my DH can't stand football because he is so super speshul".

Ghostofborleyrectory · 26/12/2025 16:45

My partner (who has a season ticket) asked me if was OK for him to go and I was delighted- reading a good book with leftovers, chocolate and gin.

wombat1a · 26/12/2025 16:46

You're kidding right? This is one of the best days for footy, get them out of the house - some peace and quiet, lovely.

Brightbluesomething · 26/12/2025 16:46

If I had a season ticket I’d be there too. Since I don’t I’ll be watching the match with my DS. A lot of our friends are going to the premiership match today and looking forward to it.
I’ve dated various men with season tickets and as a football supporter myself, Boxing Day football is great. I wouldn’t expect to get a choice in whether they go to the football, given they’re grown men, but I’d also expect them to prioritise me/the relationship too.
If I’m honest I haven’t found one that’ll do that yet. I compromised last Boxing Day and watched some of the match on my phone while visiting ex’s family and was slated for it. This year I’m single and can do as I please.

Also to add I am very disappointed there is only 1 premier league game today 😂

Edited

Same. My DH has a season ticket for his team. Boxing Day footy is the absolute best. 😊

Hedjwitch · 26/12/2025 16:47

Yes,he would if we lived nearer and I'd be quite happy to see the back of him.

HomeAloneBoxingDay · 26/12/2025 16:50

Arlanymor · 26/12/2025 16:28

Why don't you go and do something to entertain yourself? If my dad wasn't 80 and didn't fancy standing in the cold for 80 minutes we'd be at the Arms Park watching the derby with the Dragons. As it is we're watching it at home. Rugby not football, but it's just as a much a tradition when it comes to Boxing Day matches. Football bores me rigid too, but wouldn't bother me if a partner wanted to go and watch a match today - blow the cobwebs away.

Everyone is busy, my kids are all adults and at partners families.
I work from home and spend all week alone.
I’m from a family where christmas means spending time together and the men are not football goers.

You sound very needy.

No.
Every day is peace and quiet, I work from home and feel quite sad today.

Least need person I know, but 2 days per year mean family time for me.

Yes ... Boxing day matches are unegotiable.
Why don't you go too?

Squirrelchops1 · 26/12/2025 16:52

My partner doesn't have a season ticket but Boxing Day is when I'll try to get him a ticket as a Christmas treat! I usually go to as it's a great atmosphere.

I8toys · 26/12/2025 16:53

If they weren't away he'd take his dad and the kids. Wouldn't begrudge him that and it would be a lovely time alone for me.

Christmas was yesterday and it's his day off too.

MMAMPWGHAP · 26/12/2025 16:54

I have a season ticket. I would 100% be going. SO ANNOYED we are not playing.
