To have not lied to DS about trans actor in Last Christmas?

Watching above with DD17 (lesbian) and DS11 (straight) earlier today. One scene where a female presenting (long hair + fake eyelashes) but clearly biologically male actor plays a doctor (just Dr). DS says "that......lady sounds like a man".

I said yeah it is a man love. A man who identifies as a sex they are not.

DD paused then typed a wee bit more furiously than usual for 30 secs but then was ok. She knows tbf. She's lesbian and not pan.

It was so distilled down to me at the point of his very innocent (and tentative so as not to offend question) that I am not prepared to lie to my kid about the fucking fundamentals of life and tell them that person is a woman. Fuck that.

Merry Christmas 🍷

Also FUCK THAT FILM 😭😭😭😭😭

I don't believe a man can 'become' a woman or vice-versa, but that doesn't stop me acknowledging that trans people exist.

"That woman sounds like a man"

"They're trans. They were born a man but want to be seen as a woman".

There's no lie there. Nobody has ever suggested that you lie to your children and claim that trans woman aren't born male. Do you honestly think there was an expectation to pretend that you didn't know what DS was talking about, to tell him that he was hearing things or that you had no idea why her voice was so deep?

All you've done is increase the chance of your kid getting into a load of unnecessary bother by repeating what you've said.

Is this a well-known actor? I don’t know the film. If you know who it is, then I can see you trying to clarify things but if not, it’s such a non-issue. They could be a male actor playing trans or a male actor playing female or a trans actor who identifies as female or non-binary or whatever. Does if matter? Is it an important plot point?

Bit part as a Dr, not even listed in the main cast on the film's wiki. Not a famous actor at all.

Born a man? This seems to suggest that they are no longer a man, which you know to be not true.

MumChp · 24/12/2025 06:10

Why would you lie? What's the big deal?

I wouldn’t bother with all the “identifies” nonsense.
Just say factually “ yes it’s a man, attempting to dress up like a woman”.

I’m teaching my kids biological facts, that of course you can’t change sex.

you’ll be pleased to know that this precise definition is statutory RSHE as of September 2026.

we still have to be polite to these people thanks to the FWS judgement, but we can politely say, they’re men.

when you read those articles, forensically researched by Genevieve Gluck, who also managed to break into the fetish forum as part of her research; it really does boggle the mind that the Cass review is suggesting a PB trail. And Wes is going along with it.

that forum will be loving it.

WaffleParty · 24/12/2025 06:27

Oh take a day off! Watching a nice Christmas film is not the moment for your anti trans views.
And then to come on here looking for a pat on the back….🙄

TheaBrandt1 · 24/12/2025 06:29

I had the film on while cooking as seen it twice before. Clocked that scene too as wasn’t watching fully but listening heard a male doctor then when I glanced at the screen it was a man dressed as a woman.

GarlicBreadStan · 24/12/2025 02:22

Because it doesn't matter. Why does it affect you how people identify? It doesn't affect trans people that you don't identify as trans.

..because I could potentially be disciplined at work and investigated by the police for refusing to pretend that a man is a woman? I'm actually quite happy to leave people alone if they leave me alone, but they won't. They want everyone to play along or face severe legal, social and economic sanctions.

TidyDancer · 24/12/2025 06:34

We should always be honest about gender identity stuff, particularly with children to avoid future confusion. So of course YANBU. The film is fairly awful though so I wouldn’t recommend anyone to watch it!

But that's the point, isn't it? Why have we created a society where a child can get into 'bother' for stating basic reality, which 99.99% of the population accepted as basic reality all of five minutes ago?

I have a 14yo DS who thinks its all nonsense (independently of me - I'd never talked ?about it) but I've told him to be very careful what he says outside the house. Isn't that insane?

Wingingit73 · 24/12/2025 06:39

Post makes no sense. Baiting.

Read my post. I state quite clearly that I don't believe a man can become a woman.

So no, explaining to a child that the reason someone in a film who appears to be a woman sounds like a man is because they were born a man implies nothing else.

The obsession people have about this topic on mumsnet is weird and unhealthy. You make this a massive debate and massive problem when it just isn’t.
i would just say ‘biological lol ioóii
neh

‘biological lol ioóii
neh

What the fuck does that mean? And when are you going to close the quotation marks?

EleanorReally · 24/12/2025 06:45

i couldnt tell whether it was a man or a woman, i assumed a woman.
but it is a very minor part in the film

Because it doesn't matter. Why does it affect you how people identify? It doesn't affect trans people that you don't identify as trans.

Why do you think it’s ok to have an opinion on something you know nothing about and have never looked into? This issue has been hotly debated for over a decade now. The ways that ‘trans people’ who want to be treated as the sex they are not, in all and every situation, negatively affects other people has been well articulated and evidenced.

Here’s a fun fact for you. The fact that you haven’t bothered to look into an issue, doesn’t mean that issue doesn’t exist and isn’t well known and evidenced.

Here’s another fun fact. Sound bites from your equally closed minded mates, are also not ‘facts’.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 24/12/2025 06:56

Its very dangerous to bring girls up not recognising who is male. There are situations where females are at risk from males and we shoukd not teach them to pretend some males are not a potential danger

marthasmum · 24/12/2025 06:58

You’re entitled to your views about trans people. But why ‘fuck that film’? That implies that trans people can’t exist at all. They shouldn’t even be on your television? I find that pretty offensive. You believe a trans woman is a man dressing up as a woman - fine. Why can’t she be on your television doing that?

Thesofathatwas · 24/12/2025 07:04

I also love the film and my first thought was is this character is trans?

But then, my immediate second thought was how beautiful they are. Really really beautiful. A lovely character.

Just made the film even more interesting as it is a story about transplant which should be brought to the fore far far more imho.

KimberleyClark · 24/12/2025 07:09

Congratulations. You must be feeling so proud. Well done you.

Glad I’m not the only one who spotted this.

Interested in why the OP and everyone saying she is NBU thinks ‘fuck that film’ for the mere fact of having a trans actor in the cast is appropriate or reasonable?

Regardless of how OP wants to describe that actors sex or gender, why on earth is it anything other than rank bigotry to object to the mere fact of a trans actor having a (minor) role in a movie?
