To have not lied to DS about trans actor in Last Christmas?

DungOnATwig · 24/12/2025 01:10

Watching above with DD17 (lesbian) and DS11 (straight) earlier today. One scene where a female presenting (long hair + fake eyelashes) but clearly biologically male actor plays a doctor (just Dr). DS says "that......lady sounds like a man".

I said yeah it is a man love. A man who identifies as a sex they are not.

DD paused then typed a wee bit more furiously than usual for 30 secs but then was ok. She knows tbf. She's lesbian and not pan.

It was so distilled down to me at the point of his very innocent (and tentative so as not to offend question) that I am not prepared to lie to my kid about the fucking fundamentals of life and tell them that person is a woman. Fuck that.

Merry Christmas 🍷

Also FUCK THAT FILM 😭😭😭😭😭

Trans people are allowed to be actors.

Trans people are allowed to appear in films.

Deciding a film is shit and "fuck that film" on the sole basis that a trans person appears for what sounds like a very brief background role is just transphobia.

There's no way it can be dressed up as legitimate GC concern.

Try reading the OP's post again. Try and understand it this time.

It's good to speak honestly to children in their own home, as they will get a lot of dishonesty elsewhere.
Also, the OP's "also, fuck that film" comment, with loads of crying faces, is clearly about the sadness of the ending not the trans character.

Yeah.

A simple straightforward answer to an accurate observation from her DS - the OP didn’t bring up the subject. And on with the film. Not a big deal.

DH sometimes does similar - it’s not in any way a criticism of a trans actor having a part, it’s more like the ‘isn’t that the actor who played xxxx’ type thing. 🤷‍♀️

This is a really good article, and explains something I’ve been feeling ever since the TRAs started using ‘two spirit’ native Americans as historical confirmation that there have always been trans people.

“In almost none of these societies did two-spirit people born male identify as women. “

This is the most pertinent point, ‘two spirit’ men never claimed to be women, they just felt more comfortable living the way the women of their tribes stereotypically lived/behaved. They are a “third gender”, not ‘a women in a man’s body’

The other really interesting thing this article highlights is that “two spirit” people only exist in the rigidly patriarchal tribes, not the egalitarian ones. The other thing: two spirit people are never born women. Almost all of them, historically, have been men.

I think this expresses my issue with a lot of trans ideology; it cements and defines gender stereotypes, instead of removing them. The whole concept of ‘living as a woman’ relies on the idea that women dress, think and behave differently, but the only reason (most) women do dress/think/behave differently is because they have been socially conditioned from birth* to do so.

So, @DungOnATwig no, you’re not BU to answer your son honestly, although the way you worded it was a little clunky, a simple “they are a man, but they want to look like a woman, so they’ve had cosmetic surgery” is all you need to say.

I cannot imagine making this big a deal of an actor in a film who happens to be trans

Naunet · 24/12/2025 08:46

Ahh 'bitter', the good old misogynistic motive only ever dished out to actual women.

I only dish it out to bitter people.

If you can't abide by a trans person receiving the most innocuous, throwaway complement without ranting about how the poster clearly meant that trans women are better at 'womening' than actual women, that women never complement other women on their appearance unless they're exceedingly beautiful, that complements are reserved exclusively for trans people...then yes, bitter fits.

Bromptotoo · 24/12/2025 09:31

It's an actor playing their part in a film.

I don't now the film beyond a plot precis so no idea why the plot featured a Doctor who was apparently trans but they did.

I'm diametrically opposed to the GCF viewpoint and maybe that colours my vision but since you cannot eliminate Trans people you need to rub along.

UneAnneeSansLumiere · 24/12/2025 09:32

TelephoneWires · 24/12/2025 08:01

I think that in the context of this film there is really nothing to criticise about having a trans woman being the doctor. I am ‘gender critical’ and along with many people on Mumsnet believe that people can dress and present as they like but that there are limits such as single sex spaces, medicalisation of children and trans women in women’s sport.

In this particular scenario the person is a cardiologist I think and not making any points about being in women’s spaces or women’s sports or medicalising children. We get accused of wishing that trans people did not exist. This trans person is literally just doing their job in a film. So I really don’t think there should be any objection unless people think that trans people should be shut away and not seen anywhere.

I agree with this. I am GC but some people on our side take it too far, which doesn't help our case at all.

i prefer a more neutral response that better aligns with my values. That is a man. Men can present themselves however they choose and there is nothing wrong with making non-traditional choices.

If he is confused, follow up with the specifics that men can choose their hair and clothing and even wear makeup.

What they can’t choose is, to be a woman

MyLimeGuide · 24/12/2025 09:42

Good for you! Merry Christmas and thanks for the heads up to avoid that film! Xx

anniegun · 24/12/2025 09:42

There are plenty of people who would not accept your DD for being gay. Try a bit of tolerence for others just for Christmas

DungOnATwig · 24/12/2025 09:46

For the clearly hard of thinking, the "fuck that film" bit was nothing to do with the shoehorned in booming-voiced man in woman cosplay and was re: us not seeing the ending coming and being distraught 😭

Funny how kids see right through this shite though innit.........

Right, sprouts to score! Merry xmas all!

Is this a well-known actor? I don’t know the film. If you know who it is, then I can see you trying to clarify things but if not, it’s such a non-issue. They could be a male actor playing trans or a male actor playing female or a trans actor who identifies as female or non-binary or whatever. Does if matter? Is it an important plot point?

It's Rebecca Root who was born male and now identifies as female in a relationship that some call lesbian with a biological female. A fairly well known actor.

In the 2019 film the trans individual Rebecca plays a doctor.

KimHwn · 24/12/2025 09:58

I think you were conforming to gender stereotyping by calling a man a lady just because he had long hair and false eyelashes. So short haired women with no make up are male presenting?
Honestly, you think you're fighting the good fight by having an argument with yourself in your living room, but all you've done is confirm that if a man wears makeup, he must think he's a woman. That's so sexist and damaging.

In what way was the character ‘shoe-horned in’?

And Rebecca Root may have a deeper voice but there is nothing booming about her voice at all.

The ‘just stating facts’ mask is slipping.

"the shoehorned in booming-voiced man in woman cosplay"
"This shite"

This is a horrible post and it exposes your real agenda. It genuinely is about disliking trans people for you, isn't it. That person wasn't making a political point, being in a woman's space or anything. They were just an actor acting while being trans.

At the end of the day, "transgenderism" is simply a new version of sexism. It's not unreasonable to be disappointed when a film includes casual sexism or racism, nor to feel it spoils that film somewhat.

So trans actors should just not be cast in movies then?
