Scratchcard Win

MissLead · 21/12/2025 15:19

So yesterday we had our annual pre-Xmas family meal (my brother, sister partners and kids).

every year we have done this I’ve bought everyone a scratchcard as a bit of fun.

BIL won £50k on his card yesterday and is not going to share it!

I think he should!!!!

its his!!!!

DollopOfFun · 21/12/2025 15:19

Aye right.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 21/12/2025 15:20

Disagree

DecemberGoneWild · 21/12/2025 15:20

Should have had rules. Ours is that anything under £99 the individual keeps
Anything over £100 is shared equally

Personally, I'd share because it's not worth the bad feeling bit if he isn't going to then I'm not sure you can do anything but accept it

UncannyFanny · 21/12/2025 15:21

Do you buy these every year with the intention that you expect anyone who wins to give you a share of the money? That’s not how gifts work.

If you are going to do scratch cards, really it needs to be agreed in advance how it would work if someone won big

As you didn't do this, its up to him if he shares or not

Moonnstarz · 21/12/2025 15:26

Would you share if you had the win?

RealEagle · 21/12/2025 15:26

OK

Yeah we should have done this in retrospect 😡

What does that mean?

It’s mean they think you’re lying.

skyeisthelimit · 21/12/2025 15:45

and this is why I never give scratchcards as a present.

If you do give them, you need to accept that somebody might win big.

AgnesX · 21/12/2025 15:55

It's £50, it's not going to go very far. Don't be mean.

If you were talking millions that'd be different.

PS sorry number blindness 😬

50 thousand not 50 pounds!

Although I still think its bils to do as he wants with!

Wow. It’s hostile on here

OP posts:
Darker · 21/12/2025 15:57

In theory I would share.

In practice I might not want to! But it doesn’t feel in the spirit of the moment to keep all of such a big win. Different if he’d bought his own ticket.

Maybe the winner keeps half and shares the rest?

AwfullyGood · 21/12/2025 15:58

So it's only really fun if everyone loses!

Unbelievable!

Moonnstarz · 21/12/2025 16:00

I think it's hard to imagine if it was the other way. I knew you would say yes of course you would share, but the reality is if you won, you are likely to want to keep it for your own immediate family. £50 grand would help pay towards your mortgage for instance, or allow a luxury holiday. If your children are older maybe it would be you could buy them a car.
I think it's quite easy to spend on your own family without thinking you have to give half away. Would you gift a box of chocolates and expect them to be opened and shared?

SantaAnaWinds · 21/12/2025 16:00

No way would I not share in this position!

Oops, number blindness there. Edited.

As a previous poster said, a split should have been agreed in advance. As it wasn't, maybe 10% each but I can understand the tightwad keeping it to himself.
